Practical military hats are god tier, they do what a hat is supposed to: shade your eyes, shade your head and shoulders and even keep the rain off you and out of your collar. Impractical military fashion hats and berets are shit tier. especially modern ones. I will admit that old tri-corners and mitres in the 16th century looked pretty damn badass at the time.

There is no good reason to not wear a pratical hat, the military should not be a fashion show concerned with form over function as it, sadly, often is. Even those stetsons are pushing the bullshit with their decoration.

Since noon has accurately answered OP, I'll go ahead. Cavalry units are authorized to wear Stetson cowboy style hats, as a throwback to the horse mounted days. It isn't a consolation piece however, it is earned by going through a right of passage event called a Spur Ride, where they have to complete some events/tasking related to physical fitness and training skill.
