Saw this on the Kommando blog, great article on gear used to fight the elements. I feel we should have more discussion on gear that will help us fight the environment as well.

At what point does tactical gear become too much? If I can't survive the outside elements, then what good does all my gear do me?

Tacticool gear is good as long as you have shelter to go back too.
If you don't know how to make that shelter (and feed yourself and filter water) figure that shit out first. No point being a $3000 corpse if SHTF.
There's never really too "much" hear as long as you know how to use it effectively and you don't have a bunch of redundant functions IMO.

I thought I was well prepared when I went, but theoreticals vs realty can really be a different thing.
Everything planed out in my head went to shit when I was actually out there.
It really made me realize I need to take it from a different approach. My tent had gotten filled with water, somehow flowing in from the front and it got into my sleeping bag. I was miserable all night and really doubted myself if shit really did hit the fan

It's actually quite a good article. Seems like it is geared more towards the milsim folks, which is my only complaint, but otherwise the information is spot on and incredibly useful.

Thanks OP for sharing. I needed this kind of information for an event I'm going to soon.

Pics of holes.

Also, how did you not notice the holes when you, like, put the pants on?
>>
>>34095809
>Pics of holes.
I just spent like 45 minutes patching them and dont need my shitty sewing showing to be bullied
>Also, how did you not notice the holes when you, like, put the pants on?
They are on the internal part of the pocket as opposed to the external. The material just feels thin and shitty, holes are organic in shape which leads me to believe that it just wore away as opposed to a knife or something cutting into it
>>
Any /gq/'s go to milsim west and is it fun?
>>
>>34096015
Yes, a lot of us. Yes, it is fun.
>>
Is it cheaper/better to buy all your first aid supplies individually or get them in a civilian IFAK starter pack?
>>
>>34096464
Price out what you want in your ifak individually and compare to premade options. It really doesn't take that much time and effort and is the best way to go about it. Hopefully you also get some knowledge along the way which is better then being spoon-fed an answer by someone on a Korean culinary website.

You obviously lose customization and might end up with stuff you don't need/inferior components in a pre made kit. Look around at the various options and see if anything strikes your fancy.

Don't forget to include shipping prices in your research if buying online. Checking various stores for the best prices is recommended although with mixing and matching keep shipping costs in mind.

Anyone have either of the HSP Flatpacks? I'm thinking of getting a pack that I can also use as an everyday kind of bag but the 1L hydration capacity seems kind of small. Just based on the metrics it looks like it should be able to hold a 2L or 3L bladder.

So I decided to pretend I knew how to sew a few days ago. Cannabilized some of the arm pads out of a British combat shirt and used some surplus sewing kit to create this.

I thought about tearing a pouch off of my chicom and sewing some molle on it, but as you can see by my mastery of sewing I think this task is best left to some one else

Get a shorter rod or lose a couple sections.

I throw an AK cleaning rod on the side ( https://www.keepshooting.com/ak-47-cleaning-rod.html ) if Im worried about stuck cases. Most stuck cases will be out of the rifle if you give the rod a good toss down the barrel.

>>
>>34100256
Thanks for the advice, but this layout has worked well for a long time. People have suggested all manner of alternate layouts, but this one doesn't interfere with day-to-day shooting and gives me access to the full cleaning rod. No reason to ditch sections when they aren't in my way. Fully disassembled, which does take a bit longer than keeping pieces thogether, but still under a minute to assemble, clean a stuck case, and rechamber. Mostly it's there for admin cleaning, and mates with the carried cleaning kit. Nice for the range, nice for innawoods, and nice for they hypothetical fall of the earth to intelligent apes. I have had a long habit of carrying full cleaning kits with combat gear, a habit which was enforced carrying the rifle into limited resupply situations.

Does milsim west allow shooting blanks cuz I dont airshit and it would be fun to shoot blanks with my wasr.
>>
>>34101662
Yes, but blanks aren't anywhere near as useful in city games as they are (supposedly) in field games. In urban games you've got all sorts of rules to follow (including the fact that you're not allowed to shoot inside of buildings or out of windows) that basically mean you'll be standing outside of the building whenever you want to be effective. They're supposed to dominate in field games, though.
>>
>>34101679
>or out of windows)
what's the point
>>
>>34101679
So I should buy just buy an airshit rifle?
>>
>>34101690
What's the point if you can't shoot out of windows, or why disallow shooting trough windows?

They don't want the extra volume/ concussion from firing indoors to potentially hurt someone, and people tend to suck neck into the building when being shot at if they're firing from windows.
>>
>>34101713
Both. How do you call shots for blanks?
>>
>>34101690
What's the point of not being allowed to fire out of windows or what's the point of bringing a blank gun if you can't fire out of windows?

The reason you're not allowed is because there's almost no way to ensure people will do it which makes it a high risk factor for insurance. On top of this, if you think you've cleared the window but actually haven't you're going to fuck with your ears (even with earpro) and get some wicked concussion effects. It makes sense even if it is stupid.

>>34101712
For something like Caspian? Yes. There are already several people bringing blank guns which can severely cut down on overall effectiveness. You've got to ruck your own ammo and, if more than a few people have blank guns, you have the same problem we had at Grozny where half the squad is running around shooting blanks with no real airsoft support to make sure people aren't being assholes while the other half sits in the building you've been tasked to defend holding it from entire platoons being thrown at them.

In my opinion having maybe one or two blank guns in a squad of 9-12 doesn't hurt at MSW, but when you've got like four or five you've basically chopped the squad in half in terms of effectiveness and coordination.
>>
>>34101749
Got any airshit brand recommendations?
>>
>>34101662
Bring both, bring your WASR for fun real fire at HATO kiddies and bring an airsoft for indoors. There are places where blanks will be better than bbs, there are long ranges where your bbs will not reach participants, but participants will have to react and cannot cross specific area if you keep it under blank fire.
>>
>>34101796
CYMA makes good AKs

I'm bringing a blank gun + CYMA 870 airshit this time, At Gap1 I brought just airshit, at grozny just blanks (well, also a C02 pistol but that died halfway through the game), so for gap2 I'm bringing both.

Looks like I cant bring my wasr since they only allow 21+ to use blanks which is stupid.
>>
>>34101679
I disagree, I think they are just as useful in city games. Preventing the enemy from breaking out and flaking the city in an area where bbs cannot reach is incredibly useful. The only guns that will force them to use different tactics and defend that no-mans-land is blank fire. The same kind of scenario would be created if using real guns, and that really adds to the tactical realisim of the game.
>>
>>34102062
Of course, but they're far less useful in numbers. In field games there's nowhere to go so they've basically got to take the hits or be pinned down for a ridiculous amount of time. In city games, however, there's always a corner to hide behind meaning people are going to take hits or be pinned down inside of the city far less. They're useful on the outskirts, but there's no point in having four or five like we had at Grozny.
>>
>>34102062
9/10 people won't react (tactically) to blanks.

you can be on roof. buildings are a saftey issue. blanks are a little bit dangerous

theres not nearly as many blank guys in the clover platoon as wed like and would love more

cyma 040c accurate ak74m model just a little lighter and plastic a little weird. the dust cover is ribbed unlike a 74m, otherwise mostly okay. its also like $136-$170 off of evike right now. way cheaper than blanks.

BUT airsoft aegs are kinda lame blanks are more expensive and fun. bring a airsoft pistol for indoor play

msw is fun. it is not a true military simulation, it is not a substitute for training, and airsoft guns (especially aeg types, which are the cheapest and most common) are nothing like real guns. but it's fun. the military cadre help provide a good structure to the event and they along with the very military player base keep the speedsofting kiddie crap out of the events. the only airsoft I've ever played and plan to play is msw. and if you don't like airsoft guns, you can bring your rifle and shoot blanks at dudes while wearing gear and memeing with a bunch of autists from 4chan

various, we do militia so doesn't even matter, can use any chest rig you want (not American plate carriers, can't look too highspeed as militia) you'll see chicoms and russian gear mostly because there aren't a lot of good American ak rigs. Russian forces have to use russian lbe. There's various varietys of the smersh system which is a modernized alice rig. There's the 6sh11x series of vest (6sh112, 116, 117) which are kinda like us army flcs but with better adjustment. there's non modular vests like the nerpa, tarzan, pioneer, grad-2, etc.
really the russian market is just as varied as the american one in terms of load bearing gear, but smersh is most iconic

>>
>>34103049
Bretty sure when they tell you to use an IOTV you can't just downgrade to a plate carrier. I've seen the CRM memo diagrams about PPE, and it's more autistic than you could possibly imagine.

I mean, best of luck, but when you do a layout and your gear stands out, it ain't a good thing.
>>
>>34103003
I prefer buckles to be honest. I wish I could be using my other rig instead of this issued bullshit.
>>
>>34103086
A majority of us are using RFI carriers lol
>>
>>34103088
Really? In my experience those buckles'n straps made sideplates sag like crazy.

>>34103102
I mean do it as long as you can do it, but when PPE calls for full soft armor and there isn't a written justification for downgrading to plate carriers, the jig will be up.
>>
>>34103108
There is soft armor in the issue carriers though.
>>
>>34103142
Those are meant as backers to plates only, and do not provide as much area coverage. Full cut armor and plate backers are different things. Come on, you know that. Don't turn into the intentionally obtuse barracks lawyer on me.

I'm just saying that if you're getting away with it, good on you, but rest assure that the top down CRM sees full cut soft armor as the default armor, and plate carriers as a grudging exception. You guys may get away with it for a bit longer as long as you aren't around live demo or a deployment, so enjoy.
>>
>>34103175
Yes, I get it, they are just backers, but it's still protecting what's important. But hey, might as well cover myself neck to dick in soft armor while still being issued two small cracked "training plates," hooah?

Like I said my dude, it's not my personal preference- if I had my say plate carriers would be the standard, but I don't run this shit and I'm just giving a heads up that the people who do are going to demand full armor eventually.

>training plates
Black SAPIs, I presume? Weird, I've never been issued anything but serviceable plates and got ESAPIs years ago. Your armor is still supposed to be serviceable as protection stateside. "Training plates" are somebody (supply sergeant, PSG, or CO) slacking on their job.

Just buckles into the straps is fine, but so is the panel one like the Velocity Systems one you linked. How does it buckle in if the panel only has the two top buckles?

Are the D3CRX ones placard or just buckle in?
>>
>>34105381
So the regular swiftclip placards only have the 2 top buckles and the Velcro backing. The swiftclip chest rigs have Velcro backing top and side buckles. The adapter I linked essentially just adds side buckles to the placards that don't have them.
>>
>>34105381
>>34105450
Also I just checked the d3crx it has top and side buckles so you just need the straps it comes with for it to be a chest rig, but it also has Velcro backing so you could use it as a plate carrier placard. I have a Mayflower rig and it works the same way also.

Also knife recommendations are great too, so far I've got an esee 3 and a pocket knife. Thanks in advance m8's!

a USGI patrol bag is a pretty good value for a sleeping bag. theoretically good down to 30 degrees F, although that rating is a little optimistic.

Honestly that's up to you. Consider whether you'll use it more as a chest rig or on your carrier, because if you buy a chest rig it'll work better as a stand alone rig than a converted placard. On the other hand if you will use your pc more you may want a smaller placard than the full size chest rig. Pic related is my chest rig.

Anybody know of drop adapters for pistol mag pouches? I'm thinking something like the duty drop mounts that lower pistol holsters by a couple of inches.

I've kind of got this idea to have duty dropped holster and mags on a shooters belt so I can wear a ruck without even a hint of the waistbelt and shooter belt interfering with each other.

>nasty girl, have done live fire stx lanes with a white fiberglass plate with a hole in it. we are required to wear itvs for rifle quals and half of them dont have soft armor in them. like who the fuck took the soft armor out of a goddamn iotv

CRM autist here again. Wow, that's fucking horrid. Rifle quals surprisingly *don't* require any ballistic PPE- you can do them in soft duty uniforms and it's 100% in regs, most units just elect to run them in armor because "train as you fight, derp".

However, your issues of having missing soft armor and fucked up plates are awful. Because live fire STX absolutely require ballistic protection. As would doing any lane with demo in it. Beyond that, even nasty girls are (((supposed))) to be able to deploy (either overseas or to state emergencies) with their on-hand gear, meaning what you have is supposed to be good enough for the real deal. Fiberglass fucked plates and sans soft armor in IOTVs are shameful.

Not your fault. Joe uses what Joe has, but I can't even imagine working with that kind of shit logistics and supply. That makes me angry at everybody up your CoC/NCOSC for giving zero fucks probably with a "lol we'll never deploy anyway" attitude. Imagine if you duders had been dealing with those NC riots and somebody had taken a hit from a rando with a AK pistol or something. Shame. Shame on all your superiors.

I don't expect NG to have all the cool toys when they aren't going to RFI, but to me, having basic functional PPE is on a different level than missing out on "nice to have stuff". Missing out on optics, HSLD rucks, or even fully transitioning to new camo is "nice to have". You can work around that stuff, you can't really work around not having inserts in your armor vests. Blucarpet doing live fire STX without functional armor is a failure of everybody above him who went into efukit mode.

And every optional purchase that unit makes without having it's house in order compounds how fucked up it is, because I guarantee you that unit spent discretionary funds on non-essentials while the Joes had no armor.

I apologize for going full autist, but god damn do I hate leadership that half asses shit.

So, I understand that we all have IFAKs, blowout bags, and maybe more shit at the house, but if the habbening really habbens, what is our next echelon of care? Say you're trying to go get food for your wife, kids, god, whoever, and you get shot over the last gallon of milk in 50 miles. You slap on a tourniquet, chest seal, stuff yourself with combat gauze, whatever. What next? Take antibiotics and hope you don't die? Go to the hospital which may or may not be operational or even willing to take you in?

WAT DO?!?!?

>>
>>34112792
If hospitals are still safe and in operation, go to a hospital lol.

If not, then do exactly what you already said, keep the wound clean, rest and take whatever antibiotics you have access too until it heals.

Pretty basic shit senpai, although I'd wager you're very boned if something traumatic happens and you have no access to good medical care
>>
>>34112792
If it's a bullet or intrusive wound? Hope you can find a medical professional. Otherwise yeah, just hope for the best.

Very few people in this thread have the ability let alone the time to get into and learn about emergency medicine and surgery. I mean, you could learn, would be great to be a full blown medic on the side but that's pretty expensive and requires a LOT of study and knowhow. Not something you can take a few courses on get a few certificates and be good for immediate wounds without any after care.

>>34112846
>lurk more

>>
>>34112827
That's what I'm saying though. Most anons who keep a stocked IFAK (I fucking hope) know how to use the shit in it. But after that, I'd imagine most of their medical knowledge is pretty limited. Getting shot in soft tissue is comparably easy to take care of as opposed to getting shot in the shoulder blade. In every day life, that would be easily handled (in most countries) thanks to emergency services and good hospitals. But what about when there is no 911 or hospitals are full of sick/dead/dying?
>>
>>34112851
Nothing relevant even happens in the Discord 90% of the time. It's all a shit show then spontaneously 2 hours of good gear talk then back to Dolphins and shit.
>>
>>34112835
I understand that. I'm just trying to get anons to start thinking about that. Maybe they'll start taking courses or make friends with an EMT, who knows. Just trying to get the noggin joggin.
>>
>>34112861
>>34112875
You're talking about a skill set that would require either a lot of time, money and even possibly career experience to even scratch the surface of.

Bottom line is you're in a lot of trouble if you suffer a traumatic injury and have no access to quality medical care or someone with the know how to help, which thankfully there are a lot of in this country.

People used to die to very minor wounds, not having medical care fucking sucks.
>>
>>34112904
Have anti-biotics on you. Anti-biotics actually work wonders. Also you've (most likely) been immunized for a lot of shit that's killed a lot of people from a long time ago.
>>
>>34112792
Well, a lot of people here aren't medically trained to perform first aid anyway, so asking about long term care is kind of getting ahead of the curve. Applying good, competent first aid takes a lot more training than most people put into it and the number one rule of first aid courses is to find a medical pro to hand things off to- because it's drilled into training that first aid skills are not long term skills. I think the people with live training and experience are more aware of that than people who have learned only by reading. People I've encountered IRL who have only book knowledge tend to really think they are hot shit medical wizards.

So, that said, if the Habbening Habbened and you have good first aid skills and some materials you can control shock to a degree. Inserting saline drips if you have them might help, or just give somebody concious water. If the person has an injury that requires invasive medical intervention like a lung shot, gut shot, artery shot, or fractured skull or some shit there isn't much a DIYer is realistically going to be able to do.

A bullet lodged in a limb that hasn't severed an artery? Leave it in, keep the wound and packing as clean as possible, give the person antibiotics if you've got them and hope there aren't any complications. That's basically the order of treatment for anything- keep it clean, keep the dressings changed, and hope to fuck there is no internal damage above your skillset.

I mean, if it works and is tested then sure, I'm not great at bio but I can't see why not. I just wouldn't cheap on med stuff.

If you're gonna cheap out anywhere, don't cheap on guns and don't cheap on med stuff, also don't cheap on armor if you buy it.
>>
>>34113020
It's not really a cheap out situation, if you don't have access to prescription meds, which is really easy anyways but of questionable legality, the fish meds are pushed by a lot of preppers.

I don't know if they're effective at all; but they could be and as far as I know there are no reported issues giving them to people, as preppers have been doing it for years.
>>

You can go read the accounts, do your own research.

People have used them before, whether or not the drugs improved the situation or they healed naturally is speculation.

However, I'd say invest in better kneepads (Arc'teryx ones are sex), your boot blousings are higher than what I'd recommend for doing real shit, I'd also recommend better boots like Salomons or Merrells, I would personally get woodland or another more tactical color for my gloves, wear an undershirt other than white, consider raid modding your blouse (personal preference), get some decent eyepro, and last but not least, I love the patch on your plate carrier.

Overall, decent job.
