Sad, but necessary. The airframes are just too old and expensive to keep airworthy. F-35 operating costs will be similar, so there is no break there either.

Yes. Low and slow mission set is no longer primary and instead since Sniper Pod upgrade they have been put in med-high Altitude bomb taxi role which is fulfilled by a plethora of other assets that can respond overall faster to air support request.
