Serrated VS Plain Edge, Cons and Pros
>>
>>34095199

Plain edge is superior for cutting everything except man-made fibers, assuming you aren't going to try to saw through something with a pocket knife.
>>
>>34095199
Plain edge. Better at cutting and easier to sharpen.
>>
>>34095199
Plain edge
>easier to sharpen
>more versatile
>less likely to snag on things

Serrated edge
>more difficult to sharpen (but not as hard as people make it out to be)
>edge lasts longer
>can still saw through things even when dull
>better at cutting certain materials like rope
>>
>>34095199
Serrated edge pros:
>you'll get more points with other edgelords

Plain edge pros:
>everything else
>>
>>34095296
Pretty much this though with the addendum that it's harder to whittle things with a serrated edge for things like trap making and things like food prep is harder ie. skinning, scaling, gutting, peeling, chopping.

But if you are on something like a boat where you have a kitchen with knives a serrated blade with a marlin spike is probably your best bet.

Ehh... In my experience it's the other way around. Serrations suck for cutting nylon or polypropylene rope but will cut through manila like butter. I'd much rather use a straight edge for synthetic ropes.

I got stabbed/sliced by one of these- have a 6"inch gash on my forearm along with a secondary 4" surgical scar. The serrations of this fucking knife are damn deadly it cut deep, it sliced nerves and radial artery in my upper forearm.

So I bought and own one. Keep it in one of my packs.
>>
>>34095974

It wasn't very deadly if you survived.
>>
The serrated edge looks scary, but those things will get caught on bone like you wouldn't believe.
>>
>>34095199
Plain edge is better at literally everything but cutting fibrous stuff like rope. Unless you work with rope very often, get plain.
>>
Unless you work on a boat or are really into mountaineering then there's no real reason to own a serrated knife as your edc.

I have a few combo edges so I can use the serrations on things that would mess up a fine edge but since I moved on from manual labor I haven't really found much use for them, make of that what you will.

Serrated for small blades like an EDC knife. Plain for large knives like a fixed blade in a BOB.

A large plain blade can cut a rope just fine, there's enough surface area. A small knife with a plain edge is more difficult to cut rope with because you don't have much surface area to drag it across. Thus, you put little teeth on it to grab shit. Considering 90% of the shit I do with my EDC is cut strings and boxes, 50/50 plain/serrated all day. Considering serrations actually make widdling/carving more difficult for a BOB knife, 100% plain all day.
>>
>>34095199
serrated for tacticool mall ninja
plain edge for a person that actually uses a pocket knife

frankly there is no correct answer with a spiderco. unless its a gerber or leatherman, its just something else to play with when your hands are in your pockets.
>>
>>34095199
Straight edge.
Serrated blades are for sawing. That's it.
But you don't saw with a pocket knife, you saw with a saw.
Straight edges make for better knives in literally every way.

I prefer plain to cut my saucisson, serrated to cut tomatoes.
>>
>>34097127
>serrated to cut tomatoes
I used to have a tomato knife that came with a set I got but I never got to try it on tomatoes because my dad wanted to try his new electric sharpener and pretty much turned it into a butter knife.

My leatherman came with a serrated as well as plain and it's lovely. Definitely opened my eyes to serrated.
That said, I still like plain better. But now I can appreciate serrated

Serrated is is easier to sharpen on Spydercos.

You buff the back of the blade, don't worry about angle because it doesn't matter.
>>
>>34095199
I don't know which is better for practical use because I have no idea, but if you want to kill something with it plain edge blades are the only acceptable answer since serrated blades get stuck everywhere.
>>
>>34100142
I could be wrong, but that edge looks like a "never sharpened" meh sharpness factory edge.
>>
>>34097116
>Serrated blades are for sawing. That's it
You know you can have razor sharp serrations, just like you can have coarse plain edges, right?

>>
>>34097116
if you show me a saw I can keep in my pocket then I'll concede you have a point, otherwise it's still useful to be able to saw with a knife if you have to
>>
>>34095199
why not both
>>
>>34101833
>putting serrations in the ideal place for max sharpness on a straight edge
But I feel like most /k/nifefags on this board either don't hardly use their knives, or don't know how to sharpen their knives for shit anyway and might be just fine with some benefits of serration.
I'm not happy till it's scary sharp and glides through everything put before it. I won't claim to get it as sharp as a real razor blade, but it'll take every hair off my arm.

Dubs of truth. If you want to saw something buy a saw, not a serrated pocket knife.

The 50/50 serrated/plain doesn't do anything well. Don't waste your money.

>>34102523
Does he use a belt sander, grindstone or what?

I've heard belt sander is the best for doing it quick.
>>
>>34096968
Every time this knife gets posted, it still has a liner lock.
>>
>>34095974
Agustín? I didn't know you browsed on here. Fuck m8 how's the hand?
>>
>>34102798

Belt sander is quicker, but god it will fuck with the blade's tempering. Same thing with a grindstone.

I would never suggest either one unless you had a lubricator or something to keep the blade cool at all times to prevent fucking the temper.

I got this for 5 dollars at a gun show. I have no idea what it is. Has no logos and the box was essentially nothing. But it can hold 2 screwdriver bits in the back (the tape is to keep the one bit from getting snagged on things) and that's nice.

To the point of the OP: I've used the flat edge for all sorts of shit. I used the serrated bit to sharpen the very tip of a pencil once. I've use the screwdriver probably the most, which I why I used to carry a multitool around instead.

I'm not your buddy Augistin, but if he had similar injury then he would know what it's like to have several weeks of occupational therapy to re-train your hand how to work after reconstructive nerve surgery. I had to wear a custom made arm/wrist/amd orthotic (made of mold plastic and velcro) for a nearly four months because of pain, similar to carpal tunnel, but eventually got used to it.

Thank God I'm a righty and didn't affect my masturbation ritual.
>>
>>34104122

They're great.

I EDC a fully serrated one daily, and an orange one when /out/ (plain edge on the orange one).

They might be a little too big for some, but then you've got the Delica, so all is well.

plain edge is much better when it comes to batoning. all those serrations weaken the blade like notches.
