Just imagine a thicker, but lighter 1911 with a shorter slide. Get the in between option, the M&P 9c if you are dead set on S&W. Otherwise, check out the VP9/VP9sk. Sig P320 is another option or Glock 19/26

The M&P9C is probably your best bet if you're concerned with size while still wanting shootability. That being said, the Shield while a single stack 9mm is surprisingly easy to shoot for its size.
