Why weren't submachine guns used during WW1 at all?

That's actually a good question. I mean, they had machine guns, so it just seems weird that they kept using bolt-action rifles. I imagine something like a mini-14 would have been pretty noice to have back then.

The real question here is why didn't countries make shorter bolt actions standard issue for trench warfare. A 16" M1903 sounds pretty sexy.

Why didn't they just issue M16s? Why don't we outfit our troops with plasma rifles and laser beams today?
