Not sure which division of the SS my grandad was in, but he used to ride on the back of panzers with an mp40 and storm through villages on the Easter front.

He was an ethnic German living in modern day Hungary.

12th SS Hitlerjugend, the division was sent to the area around Caen as early as 1943. It sent its tank crew to Panther and transmission facilities to learn how to maintain their own tanks.
When it had no tanks crews that were sent from the Eastern front from the Ukraine took damaged Panzer 4s back to Germany to repair it paid for the maintenance by bringing two T34s
from the eastern front.
No time wasted on fancy drills just walking in steps and songs for camraderie, focusing rather on combat drills and unit training.
The first division to be assigned to Rommels command from the general western command.

The romantic notions that Himmler had about the Bosnian Muslims were probably significant in the division's genesis.
