While there is a lot of credit that is given to the Rhodesian Security Forces (and rightly so) for their feats during the Rhodesian Bush War, I would like to have a thread dedicated to the Saffers who warred with the Cubans and Angolans to their north during the long Border War. On a shoe-string budget and sanctioned out the ass these guys managed to pull off some rather spectacular accomplishments while being outnumbered and very often technologically outgunned.

So without further ado, SADF thread.

Joint SA and Portuguese patrol, either in Angola or Mozambique back when the Portuguese were still active in their own bush wars.
>>
And here's a joint Rhodie-Saffer op. Unfortunately these guys died shortly after this pic was taken when their chopper was hit by an SA-7 over Mozambique. Relations between Rhodesia and SA were usually good, however they were often strained and by the end of the 1970's the Saffers cut most of their support due to a number of reasons. Also didn't help that for some reason Ian Smith's ambassador to SA didn't get along at all with his SA counterpart.

On the subject of SADF choppers, in a similar fashion to Rhodesia SA made liberal use of the Alouette III in a number of roles. Very often they'd fly recon flights over large sections of Namibia/Angola, and very often these little choppers would get into hot contact with FAPLA (Military arm of the MPLA) or PLAN (military arm of SWAPO). It speaks volumes of their skill that many SA chopper pilots would manage to extricate themselves from clouds of ground fire and the occasional Strela missile. Some of these guys would go on to join Executive Outcomes as pilots years later.

If one is wondering about the black soldiers in 32 battalion, many of these guys were former FNLA combatants or had formerly been in the Portuguese colonial military. Hounded by the MPLA, many went south to join the SADF and continue the fight. A lot of these guys would find employment after the Border War in Executive Outcomes.

This pic is a bit interesting. This is Ken Gaudet, a member of 32nd Battalion who is American. He joined the RLI during the Rhodesian Bush War and after that ended he went to SA and joined 32 Batt. Interestingly enough, he's seen here wearing what appears to be Rhodie camo, with an SA R4 rifle.

I had a friend, Robbie, who served as a paratrooper medic. He came out with probably PTSD before it was diagnosable I suppose. Three stories I remember him telling me although he only talked about any of it when he was shitfaced. His predominant area of operations was with the SADF against SWAPO up on the northern Namibian border and into Angola along the Caprivi Strip.

1). They were taught to catch and eat rats when on manoeuvres. Stealth was everything in the bush. I cant remember specifics but he told me that as far as their COs were concerned, once you were in the bush, you were on your own and too bad if you got caught or killed.

2). He was on a gunship during curfew along the Windhoek road one night that opened fire on a car suspected to be carrying combatants. Turned out it wasn't and they were civilians so they hauled survivors into the helicopter but his CO told him not to treat a pregnant woman and she died.

3). In Angola itself, he was attached to a Koevoet battalion for a time and they used to attach dead bodies of fraternising civilians to the front of their armoured vehicles and use it as an intimidation tactic when moving through villages.

So yeah, they were impressive but pretty fucking ruthless and South African soldiers suffered a lot for it.
>>
I've got my dads old SA uniform from his conscription service. He was in the second to last compulsory intake so they were never asked to hand all of their stuff in afterwards.

They would dig dunny holes for thir toilets. One time he and a mate snuck up on another guy while he was dropping a turd and stuck a shovel underneath his ass to catch his shit. The guy freaked out wondering where it went when he looked down.

>>34088332
Interesting stuff. Not sure about the first two points, but the third one was well recorded. Koevoet would not fuck around and I believe they got bonuses for more kills.
>>
>>34089280
I don't remember if he's mentioned in it but I've read about the guy before and he talks about how everything he knew about bush wars he learned from Croukamp and that Croukamp was the greatest leader he ever knew and legitimately cared for all the men under him

You're not sure about the first two points, why? These are accounts I was told and the ones I remembered best. He showed me photos of the last one. He kept an album of photos of dead bodies because I guess that helped him. The story I remember most was the woman in the helicopter. Pregnant, innocent civilian but he still wasn't allowed to treat her because that's how bitter feelings were. This is all around the late 80s, early 90s; sometime after the second state of emergency when things were just manic. I was there, I didn't serve but I saw it all and this is the guy I most remember that encapsulates for me the sheer brutality of the time. I'm pleased our guys have finally got recognition but I can assure you, as a South African alive at the time and who lived through all of this, I'm glad it's fucking over, believe me. You talk like this is glamorous but these were young boys who were conscripted and like Robbie, they were good kids, largely terrified, pitted against the most ruthless of enemies and they never got the help they deserved. Still, like I say, I'm glad they finally got recognition, even if it is on some gook image board.

>however they were often strained and by the end of the 1970's the Saffers cut most of their support due to a number of reasons. Also didn't help that for some reason Ian Smith's ambassador to SA didn't get along at all with his SA counterpart.

It ran a lot deeper than that. Rhodesian and South Africans were close out of necessity and once the benefit ran out, South Africa cut them loose. There was a lot, and I do mean a lot, of bad blood between the English and Afrikaners in Southern Africa (especially in Anogla, at times) and it spread to wherever they were working.

It didn't help that most of the SADF ground troops were Afrikaner, with the English South Africans preferring the Navy and Air Force. Rhodesians viewed the SADF ground force as basically an Afrikaner rabble and viewed their own efforts as being more nuanced, with a better ethos and a prouder history.

Hard times, and some very sad stories.
>>
>>34091458
This is mostly true but South Africans were conscripted so English-speaking went wherever they were told to go and were best suited. It is most definitely true that Afrikaaners couldn't give a fuck about 'when we's', that's for sure.

>>
>>34091528
I was under the impression, mainly due to a radar tech I knew who had been in the Saffer Navy, that 2/3 of the Army was Afrikaner speaking and about 90 percent of the Navy and AF were English and it was down to tradition, location and aptitude (lots of English owned boats and could afford private flying lessons prior to training)

He didn't dislike the Afrikaners, he was as proud of a South African as any, but he stressed that they were about as separate as you could be while remaining on the same side.
>>
>>34091686
Just get a modern one. Something made for conscripts in the twentieth century in a third world country is not going to be as good as something sold in a camping shop.
>>
>>34091694
Nah, you're likely right but I was there at the time and conscription usually meant that they went where they were told. What could have happened is that English-speaking were put into more tech-orientated areas as they were largely reluctant to defend and had richer backgrounds which meant they were more likely to push their weight around. This is entirely anecdotal though and I don't actually know other than you were conscripted and then had to go through six months "basic" as they called it. After that, I guess they put you where you were best needed.

And yeah, that's true - English-speaking and Afrikaaners don't like each other at all. I'm rare amongst English-speaking South Africans in that I really like them. Usually, they're looked down on but when it comes to anything to do with African survival, trust me: you only want an Afrikaaner on your side.

Search for "veld hat" in future. You should also get 'velskoen' - bush boots.

>What could have happened is that English-speaking were put into more tech-orientated areas as they were largely reluctant to defend

I wouldn't call it that. I'd accept that they were reluctant to be told what to do by an Afrikaner, but that goes both ways and probably explains the split in preference. Same with universities, rugby clubs, cricket teams and neighborhoods so the SADF isn't a stretch.

I'm personally not a fan of Saffers regardless of what they speak (though I do prefer them to many, many other nationalities) but I'll be the first to admit that's down to some of their antics when I've worked with them and employed them, and that may have just been a few bad eggs.
>>
>>34091790
Yeah. We have "chips" on our shoulders, apparently. I'd agree with that.

And no, that's true - English-speaking South Africans largely aligned with so-called 'liberal' values and didn't feel that the fight was theirs. It was a hugely divided country ideologically and Afrikaaners are the ultimate laager-mentality people. They literally do not give a fuck about you if you are not one of them.

The Bush War in Rhodesia. Literal title of the book, alternatively look up Dennis Croukamp as an author. Great read, basically described himself as a young guy who didn't fit in well in the regular army but liked getting into trouble. So he jumped at the chance to join the fledgling Selous Scouts.

'Scope' wasn't a porno mag. It was a sort-of very tame 'gentleman's' magazine that had girls in bikinis interspersed with topical news stories and editorial pieces. Very popular and widely available. SADF are so sexy. It's like the perfect culmination of 1980s aesthetics mixed with glamour poses.

None of the photo ops look sexy like the western ones do. They look rugged, as if they've been out in the bush. Western 1980s photo ops look like the men left the gym with a pump, donned fresh uniforms, then put a little dirt on them.

These cunts haven't bathed in 6 months.

No, at heart it's Calvinist but modified from what I remember. The Great Trek is analogous to the 'manifest destiny' thing that happened in the US. For Afrikaaners it wasn't only an expansion, but preordained and necessary. For what it's worth, if you ever want to understand the Afrikaaner mindset, explore the story of the Battle of Blood River very closely (events leading up to and the battle itself) and their subsequent 'Covenant' and its significance to them. Day to day, they're conservative protestants, usually in line with the Dutch Reformed Church, but at heart, they are hard-core Calvinist. In my opinion, anyway.

One other thing to point out just because I see it a lot - the use of 'boer' when talking about Afrikaaners generally is highly derogatory and they WILL take offence to it if you use it in front of them. The word literally means 'farmer' and it was used by both buitelanders (foreigners), and English-speaking in South Africa, as well as the ANC et al, essentially as a slur. 'Boer' taken to mean a slow-witted, ill-educated person. Unless they are a farmer (and you speak Afrikaans), then its best to refer to them as Afrikaaners (correct spelling), or Afrikaner.

this is wrong boer is used as is to refer to afrikaaners who farm as occupation as in farmer. There is a slight nuance that most people don't understand based on the conversation's context. The same way cape malay and coloured are similar but distinct as a coloured person for Elderado Park Jorburg wouldn't be referred to as cape malay or all blacks referred to as zulus

The MRAPs America deployed in Afghanistan were initially Saffer-made. MRAP technology was developed in Rhodesia and South Africa during the 70s and 80s. Pretty cool stuff. Another interesting tidbit is that the Zimbabwe army (which expended most of its Rhodesian-inherited resources in the Congo early on and fell into disrepair) took Rhodesian APCs they inherited to Somalia in the 90s and US Marines rode around in them for a while.

Incorrect. A 'boer' as used by any outsider when referring to a person who is not a farmer is derogatory. You're either not South African, or you've misunderstood my post. It's only English, outsiders who don't know better, the ANC etc. who refer to Afrikaaners as 'boers'.

One last image, view from a Ratel looking at a T-55 it just knocked out during Operation Modular. If you don't know about it, I heavily recommend looking it up. Just finishing up a book right now called the Battle on the Lomba 1987 by David Mannall, and I cannot recommend it enough. The book goes through Mannall's two years of National Service and terminates in Operation Modular where as a part of 61st Mechanized he helped to fend off a much larger FAPLA offensive into southern Angola. What makes this engagement remarkable is that while the 61st Mechanized was well equipped with several variants of the Ratel, they were grossly outgunned by their FAPLA and Cuban adversaries who were reinforced with several squadrons of T-55s, BTRs, BMPs, and had the benefit of air support (The SAAF airfields were too far in the rear to provide prolonged support beyond lightning quick raids, and the Mirage F1 wasn't considered modern enough to tackle Cuban Mig-23s). Despite being massively outnumbered and outgunned (the author mentions that in training they were told that SADF Olifants would take care of tanks and that the 90mm guns on the Ratel might not have sufficient penetration on T-55s) 61st Mech held the line and in the process annihilated a much larger FAPLA armored force. The Ratel crews also learned to their relief that at close range the 90mm can easily cut holes into T-55s, though they had to constantly remain on the move in order to deny FAPLA gunners a clean shot. In the end the SADF lost a handful of Ratels while destroying over a hundred Angolan vehicles, including several squadrons of T-55s. Fantastic read, and really shows what a well-disciplined and well-lead fighting force can do against a much larger adversary who is unprepared.
>>
>>34111314
Finally, someone else that has read it. The account of the battle itself will draw you and force you to keep reading. It is an amazing account about a battle that is mostly forgotten and a great insight into the SADF during the Border War.
>>
>>34111683
I'm at the last part of the book. I've read a hell of a lot more on the Rhodesian War, but I hadn't really read up on the SA Border War and figured I'd start with this book. Very interesting to see the differences in the culture of the SADF as compared to the Rhodesian Military, also gave me some insight as to how SA prosecuted their war in Angola/Namibia while on a shoestring budget. I have Piet Nortje's 32 Battalion which I will read next.

Did he? Or did he refer to them as 'boerevolk'? And that still won't alter my point, I'm afraid. Unless you are an Afrikaans speaker, and you are referring to someone who is a farmer, then YOU using the term 'boer' to refer to Afrikaaners is an insult and highly derogatory and will be taken by Afrikaaners to be as much.
