What does /k/ know about the VSS/AS Val family of weapons?
Has anyone actually used any of them?
How viable are they in real life?

The Soviets knowing more about small arms, and not being riddled with corruption like the US realized that a sub-sonic 5.45 sucks ads. Thus in the 80's the created the 9x39 for their Spetnaz to rekt NATO. So it had to be subsonic, and be able to penetrate NATO body armor at 200M.
The recoil stands between a .300 memeout and .458 SOCOM. It's stopping power is pretty good, due to having 2x the mass of 9mmx19.

Comrade Anon, let me tell you story of my experience with AS VAL when I was Vympel.

Gun was heavy, like proper Russian rifle. Not that блядь of a rifle M4. Gun cannot be heard by terrorists when firing. Good Russian engineering.

In Vympel, I called my assigned AS VAL Aнacтacия. It mean Anastasia. Why? Because I secretly wish I were Czar, so I can drink Cristal.

Anyway, when I operating in Caucasus, I kill many terrorists with Aнacтacия. It was accurate and silent. It also mean when I consume my vodka ration and become happy and shoot Aнacтacия randomly into night, nobody knows.

It was good gun. Good Russian gun.

I wonder how feasible it is to ship every part of the VSS except for the lower.
I'm thinking we could live without a 100% repro VSS, and if you had every part except for the lower, it should be simple enough to reverse-engineer and mill one here.

I know it can be done but who the hell do you talk to?
the only thing I can think of is talking to some ukrainian who captured one in the war. And then what?
Not that it really matters to me. I'm not the only one with schematics. Once I get my hands on a mill then I am golden.

and then ammo...

they're guns that shoot bullets. good against people, bad for shooting tanks at 1000 meters

The VSS and Val were, to my understanding, designed to supplant the AKMS/PBS1 combination in as many aspects as possible by drastically improving subsonic suppressed performance. 9x39mm acts like a really fat 5.45x39mm, it's very long and is intentionally imbalanced, leading to the violent, early yaw which combined with low velocity makes it rapidly lose effective range. Not a laser beam of death, but it's a good round for its purpose - push through a lot of things with minute-of-bad-guy accuracy while keeping a fairly low profile.

He probably is, the WA2000 is an even bigger overhyped videogame meme than any slavshit ever was. Hard to believe they charged 12K for them, even harder to believe people actually paid.

declassified info says that some specialty rounds can penetrate over 10mm of steel (what hardness tho? RHA? Hardened plate steel? Tincans?) at 200 meters. Theoretically good value for money when it comes to APCs - still not good against any tanks.

Oh yes, having a cam lug behind your locking lugs is such a technological breakthrough in small arms design. The Russians are truly the greatest and most original small arms designers in the world.

>>

it is a dual cam lugs system

AK and AR-18 use a single cam lugs system

and the design of the cam slot is space age compare to existed design

Read a good article in Small Arms Review magazine about Russian 9x39 weapons, as others have mentioned, it yaws a lot, but also has a hell of a lot drop beyond like 400m. Russian Soldiers in Chechnya liked it for room clearing as it wasn't as deafening as an AK, while maintaing good lethality. I remember hearing you could by a car for the price of an AS Val on the black market.
>>
>>34073034

Right, but what do the extra cams do? If it doesn't add any functionality or utility then whats the point?

more repeatable lock up
better accuracy

>>34073269
people say it is as loud as a .22lr rifle
>>
>>34073318
>more repeatable lock up
Okay, but the same could be achieved with simply more lugs
>better accuracy
How? Its still a 7 inch barrel with holes drilled in it. This feels like a buzzword.
>>
>>34073269
I'd like to see this weapon with a 12" long western integrated supressor, wonder if it even matters for the round
>>
>>34069918
You can buy magazines and ammo actually from Russian Facebook, VK. There's a ton of Russians who don't give a fuck about export laws or have an inside guy in customs.
>>
>>34073340
>simply more lugs
this is fully automatic gun. you can not just keep adding more lug like the bolt action gun
>>34073340
>Its still a 7 inch barrel with holes drilled in it
that is exactly why it need all the accuracy it can get

though shorter barrel have better barrel harmony than long barrel

the VSS use with match grade ammo, much better and more expensive than the ammo for VS. It was intended to be a sniper rifle
>>
>>34069955

An unsuppressed .22 lr?

Not sure that comparison makes sense as with unsuppressed supersonic .22 the sonic crack is louder than the muzzle blast.

Western suppressor designers have almost uniformly moved away from flat baffles and now use coned baffles with clips to cause turbulence.

While the angled flat baffles on these Russian cans might help, I can almost guarantee that Western cone style baffles offer superior sound reduction.

yes, without the supersonic crack.

yes, and they also heat up way faster and a bitch to clean

keep in mind that Soviet suppressor are design to work with under power subsonic ammo

VSS and VS Val aren't design to fire without the suppressor,

microphones alter audio you know.
You can't use a youtube video to judge loudness, except in comparison to other sources of noise.
Even then, shitty microphones will clip the audio at a certain loudness and make the recording completely useless.
