Obsolescence is bullshit edition!
>>34060055
Buying a GP100 made me realize that I'm probably a revolver guy.
Now I want another revolver. Probably a snub for carry.
Does anyone know what kind of S&W I have? It looks like an old model 36, but is stupidly light and for some reason the cylinder is not magnetic. Is titanium nonmagnetic or is it made of aluminum? It belonged to my great great grandfather and I am 24 to maybe put a very vague approximate age to it.
>>34060101
Smith and Wesson Model 12 or Model 37 depending on whether it's a J or K frame sized gun. They had both aluminum frames and aluminum cylinders and were used by the Air Force in the past. Unfortunately, the cylinders being aluminum means that they were/are fairly fragile guns that don't hold up very well even when firing standard pressure .38 Special loads. I believe the Air Force actually had a special lightweight loading just for them.
Single action best action, cowboy style
>>34060173
Damn I have been carrying the thing. It is definitely a j frame. Will the thing blow up if I keep shooting it? I have been carrying standard pressure low recoil Hydra shocks.
The thing actually belongs to my grandmother, but she has been letting me use it since my current gun is getting fixed. Should I tell her not to shoot it anymore? I would hate to see her get hurt.
>Uberti Colt Walker w/ .45 LC Conversion
>Taylor's & Co. 1873 Cattleman .44 Magnum
>Ruger Super BH w/ Vent Rib .44 Magnum
Which one should I go for? I'm really leaning toward the first one. Or should I skip the single action meme and get a more contemporary revolver?
>>34060055
>Buy LCRx in 357
>Shoot some 38 special through it
>Hit 3 inch group at 25 yards like fucking magic
>Shoot some 357 through it
>Groups are less fantastic at 25 yards but at least all on the target
>Immediately want a blackhawk
>Immediately want a revolver carbine
>Want to take my gun home and clean it up and cuddle with it.
I still carry a semiauto with me a lot of the time, but I never leave my house with my revolver.
>>34060337
>with
without..
>>34060326
What's the argument for a single action revolver besides being cool? It's not like you couldn't just fire any double action revolver in single action.
>>34060326
Do you want to shoot hot loads, if so you'll need the ruger, I heard uberti makes the Taylors so those are likely the same
>>34060246
>Will the thing blow up if I keep shooting it?
IIRC, Smith and Wesson specifically stopped manufacturing them because the cylinders would crack or go kaboom. It's probably fine if you shoot it sparingly and absolutely don't use +P, but I would look into buying another gun if your intention was to shoot it a lot. It is your great, great grandfather's gun and may well have been carried by him if he was in the military at any point, so it would be a shame if it broke. Just my two cents.
>>34060346
>besides being cool
As if this wasn't enough
>>34060346
Mechanical simplicity. Think pump action vs. semi auto shotguns.
>>34060352
I've heard this too, but the T&C is significantly cheaper.
>>34060384
Yeah it is, I just don't know enough about revolvers to know if there's some other advantage besides that.
>>34060405
Significantly cheaper? Really? Aren't ubertis available for around 450$? Not sure I would want to buy a cheaper gun
>>34060357
Neither she nor I shoot it too often, but she does shoot it on the rare occasion. My great great grandfather carried the thing every day and my great grandmother carried it as well. My grandmother never really carried it because they implemented licensing in order to carry and she never bothered getting one, but she does use it for home defense. My mom is a liberal so she had no interest in it, but I occasionally borrow it because it is so nice to carry. Hell I use the same holster for it the my great grandmother used. It does have a lot of family history and sentimental value.
>>34060453
The Uberti .44 Cattleman retails at over $650 and the T&Co for under $600
>>34060055
I carried a 686 with a 4 inch barrel in the late 90s, as a duty weapon in a high crime area...it scared the natives
>>34060535
How was carrying a 686? I was thinking about getting a GP100 or 686 for carry.
I really want one of these.
>>34060466
I'm seeing them listed at 550 actually and the new ubertis have the floating firing pin, I wonder if the taylors will as well
>>34060346
Single action revolvers with fixed cylinders are an inherently strong design.
Korth/Nighthawk mongoose .357 is by far the best .357 I've ever used! Too bad its $3500 and illegal in commiefornia otherwise i would drop the money on it!!!
>>34060556
I've bought more than one , if that tells you anything...got a model 60 to go with it...they carry really well suprisingly
Techno-future 90s obsolescence here.
>>34060739
You can probably get it by having a dealer convert it to single action. Then you would need to hire a gunsmith to convert it back to double action in California. I know this because I looked into how to get a new Manurhin MR73 and this is what I will have to do.
Can I get a hot dog?
>>34060408
None, which is why everybody dropped single action revolvers for double action revolvers for serious usage when that option became available. Single action is basically for hunting and range toys at this point, but they're damn fine at those jobs. I'm thinking of getting a Ruger Single Ten myself.
Anybody have any experience with one of these? I have one on the way and it will probably be here tomorrow so I'm excited. Heard pretty good things from such a cheap revolver, but was wondering if anyone here's owned one. EAA Windicator in .357 Magnum.
>>34065941
Don't ever put +P in it.
>>34065952
Wait it's rated for .357 Magnum so I'm figuring it can shoot .38 special +p since it's weaker than magnum. I don't think I've heard of +p .357 before? You mean don't put super hot loads such as buffalo bore through it? Because I wasn't planning on it.
>>34065941
I don't have experience with that particular gun, but I have a .38 i inherited from my grandfather that was made in the same factory in 1970 and imported under the Herter's brand. 47 years old and it's still tight as fuck. It's ugly as shit though lol.
>>34060055
I just purchased a 642 for pocket carry 2 weeks ago. The screw holding the grips together is already rusted and the finish on the wood is already bubbling up. What grips do yall recommend for this little pocket cannon? (the bubbling on the grips showed up 3 days after I took this picture, but it shows the rusted screw)
Bought this the other day
haven't had the chance to fire it yet but I love the way it handles
i just bought one of these...I love it
>>34060055
I really like the look of this revolver
can anyone point me in the direction of similar revolver aesthetics
>>34066237
It's a Smith and Wesson. If you like that one you'll like most guns they make.
>>34066251
hmm I have heard stories of Smith and Wesson revolvers failing pretty early in lifespan versus ruger which seems to last
any truth to this?
>>34066138
That seam though
>>34066131
Nice! Is that the model 69? I love the new one that smith just released with the short barrel(pic related).
>>34065987
Shit, just the fact that it lasted that long is pretty comforting.
>>34066237
It's a Ruger GP100 6 inch in stainless. I had one myself for awhile, great guns. That one in particular has a set of Hogue wooden grips and fiber optic front sight. Other than that its stock so you could replicate that look quite easily.
>>34066251
It literally say's Ruger GP100 in the side of the barrel buddy.
>>34066263
It's a Ruger they are indestructible.
>>34066269
it werks
>>34066281
It's the 66
>>34066289
Oh well they released a short barrel one of those this year as well. Check it out she's a beauty.
>>34066316
the short barrel ones are cool but I wanted the longer barrel so I could really take advantage of the .357 mag power
>>34066336
True that, the power of a .357 magnum coming out of a 4 to 6 inch barrel is hard to argue with.
>>34060101
>>34060173
>>34060246
>>34060357
>>34060464
I think those with the aluminum cylinder are fairly rare/possibly valuable.
That, plus the sentimental value, and personally I'd lovingly retire it and pick up a plain 642 or LCP for daily carry.
You might really have something there, anon.
>>34066114
Hogues. Also oil prevents rust.
>>34060739
>Too bad its $3500
I'd say that's a perfectly fair price, and pretty much what a new production Colt Python would be selling for these days. At least with the Korth you can confidently shoot the snot out of it with any ammo you want and not have to worry about timing or other mechanical issues.
>>34066251
did you even look at the image you moron
>>34060739
Mmmmmmmmmmm.....
S&W 586-3 or Ruger Service Six? Ruger is $150 cheaper. But that full underlug is sexy on the Smith.
I bought this Monday and I love it. Shooting it for the first time was wonderful
>>34066237
It is just a gp100 with wood grips.
>>34063883
Can i really do that? :) i would do it in a heartbeat. Also, i was thinking about manhurin aswell.
>>34067660
Whoops, meant >>34061029
>>34067246
Rugers are stronger
>>34060326
Uberti Walker w/o cartridge conversion or Ruger SBH
Why would you get a .45 LC-converted Walker? That'd be like getting a .44 Russian-converted Desert Eagle, or a .50 GI-converted X-frame.
What would be the point?
>>34067286
very seriously considering buying one of these for carry.
Whats a good cheap first revolver?
>>34067246
http://www.gunbroker.com/item/650531951
Do EET.
>>34068474
S&W 642
>>34067660
Yes, you really can. People do that with Chiappa Rhinos too.
>>34060093
It's a wheel gun addiction.
God help you if you start collecting the same model but in different calibers.
I had GP100 in .357 and then the 22lr.
Now of course I had to have my SP101 in .357 have a 22lr buddy.
>>34068474
Ruger GP100. Got mine out the door at $708 after tax.
I love my security six.
>>34068760
I'd like to get an LCR and a Blackhawk next.
Maybe a Rhino for giggles at some point.
And if I could ever get my hands on a Manurhin MR 73? Oh god.
>>34068702
Damn! I may have to get on that then! Does korth even do single action though?
>>34068980
Look into korth my guy ;).
>>34068986
They probably do for California clients. Chapuis does with the MR73.

How is the GP100? I can't decide between stainless or black with a 4" barrel
So i live in canada and am looking to buy my first pistol in the next few months, i dont have a ton of spending money but would prefer to save up and "buy once cry once" to get high quality. Any revolver i buy is strictly a range toy and for a my collection, should i start with the ruger redhawk or the sbh? Either way i want a 44 with a 4.5" barrel (i already cast and reload 44) the sbh is about 1000 and the redhawk is around 1400. With the sbh i could eventually get a second one and dick around with cowboy action, plus i love the single actiob look. but the redhawk is just so big and obnoxious i love it.
>>34069566
>With the sbh i could eventually get a second one and dick around with cowboy action, plus i love the single actiob look.
So get the SBH, then.
>>34069556
Other anon here
I prefer stainless myself, it's suppose to be really durable and what not
Looks great in my oppinion (almost a RE1 remake look for nastalgia)
And shoots great! I just recommend paint over the front sights or buyong new one. I hate those all black sights!
Also, if you have small hands keep away from the newer grips, my friend who is 5'8 hates the fell and we nottice it tears into his hand prettty roughly.
(Was cleaned after pic was taken because stainless)
>>34069626
thanks anon, desu i think stainless looks better with the wood insert grips, my old man had a gp100 as his first handgun, it had the wood insert grips, idk if it was a 4" or 6" but im assuming 4" since he stashed it in his glove box.
>>34069600
Well this is the first time a webm has ever provided an answer to one of my problems.
Thanks anon
Hoping to get out shooting this weekend.
>>34069556
>How is the GP100?
Mechanically sound but ugly as sin.
>>34060093
Just shot my LCR for the first time, it was fun as fuck. Track down a used one for 250-300 and you will be pleased.
what's a good 45LC I could fan to have cowboy fun?

Since they went to the ball detent in the crane they appear to use the full length ejector rod- which is a good thing.
Thinking about blowing my money on one of these custom jobs.
>>34068957
The only appropriate answer.
4 inch barrel master race.
>>34070410
ruger vaquero
>>34070473
Is there also a custom job for that god-awful shaped grip?
>>34060055
What is the absolute best 38 special load for carry? (Snub nose)
>>34067246
The Ruger DA Six series revolvers are well-kept secrets like the Mosin was before the proliferation of the internet due to how great they are in terms of $ for value. In your particular comparison, something you should consider is that the Ruger is going to be at least as strong (probably stronger), has a smaller frame despite being at least as strong due to better engineering, and is less expensive as well.
>>34070892
>Vaquero
My brother has the .357 version, has nothing but good things to say about it.
>>34070954
Take a look at http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/revolver-ballistics-test/
I actually got a couple hundred rounds of 130 grain Rangers before the results of this test came out for like 33 cpr after shipping. Pretty glad that I did.
>>34070990
I don't know about you guys, but I can't consider clear gel tests valid. They just are not consistent.
>>34071024
Consistent with what? Do you mean that they are inconsistent with real world performance or that the gel blocks used are of inconsistent quality? Because neither statement is true.
>>34071037
They tend to inconsistently bounce bullets back. The bounce back varies from bullet to bullet and I doubt that the bounce back is anything close to consistent. I just don't like it. On top of that I am not convinced that clear gel is equivalent to real ballistics gel. That being said, clear gel is better than no gel so I can't really complain.
>>34060326
Isn't there a Walker specific wildcat cartridge?
This is what I have along with the Heritage 22/22 mag cylinder swap out single action, I also have a reproduction of the Colt Navy Single action percussion revolver.
>>34066114
You got to stop eating so much garlic man.
>>34068406
You need a proper duster and hat to do that
Whats a good place to buy a nice leather gun belt online? I need to go full cowboy
>>34073147
epsaddlery.com
>>34073160
that was quick, thank you!
Quick, someone convince me not to drop 150 for a .22 rough rider.
>>34068760
I did the same thing with the GP100. The 22lr is really fucking awesome. I'm hoping to shoot steel challenge with it next weekend.
>>34069556
I got a blued/black with a 4" barrel. Love it.
The recoil is surprisingly tame.
>>34060055
Fuck yeah boys i carry 1858 remingtons in a shoulder holster from elpaso saddlry. I may get cartridge conversions for them soon.
>>34070383
I put an LCR on layaway recently while I pay some bills.
Can't wait to get it. Planning on using it as my carry gun.
>>34073375
Do it.
>>34069556
I'd recommend changing the hammer spring if you get one. Ruger overs springs those guns to hell and back for some reason.
Should I get a Single Ten rangetoy or an LCR/SP101 carry gun first?
>yes, I'm a Ruger fanboy when it comes to revolvers
>>34073541
Eh, I'd say having a carry gun is a bigger priority so get the LCR/SP101 first.
Range toy can come later.
>>34073396
Bruh
>>34073935
god damn it the super blackhawk is sex.
i wish they'd chambered the black one in .454 just to have an excuse to fire it
>>34073541
It really depends on what guns you already have and whether you already have your CCW permit or at least a concrete timetable for obtaining one.
>>34070937
Nigga its .454 casull, you don't want anything but rubber.
foddy short and weak represent
>>34077570
i've seen those-- did it come with a pair of cylinders or is it just straight .40?
>>34077816
it's only .40. i assume they were worried about the aluminum frame not being able to handle 10mm, because the cylinders are oversized length wise for .40 so they could definitely fit 10mm.
i paid less than $1100 for the pair, so no regrets.
>>34077555
>needing hideous rubber grips to make the gun shootable
Yet another reason why anything bigger than .44 Mag is a meme round.
>>34060055
Contributing with my MR73.
Just loaded 12 rounds of 200gr xtp's with 6gr of trail boss. Hoping to get some nice and feather light shooting ammo for this little guy.
>>34079261
.454 is fun though. Also, rubber grips are better IMHO. Drop the ascetics and rubber grips out perform wooden ones.
