What will you do if some city slicker tries to tie up your hogs, and theres a bandit under your porch, if you have a six shooter you will be protected.

At the risk of starting some shit flinging what are the "best" revolvers if you had to take one into combat. Im talking 8 shot 357s or tacticool revolvers in general, or what you guys think would be the best.

Do you think revolvers hold a viable place as a back up gun (not a sidearm, but a third weapon)

Shaddap, trips ignored. Yes, revolvers are viable even as one's only protection. Obviously no pistol is as good as a rifle, but when did you carry one of those in public? Git gud with it, and you won't need 15+1 to put down a threat.

I have had a couple of modern wheelguns for years, they're fun and I like them. But a friend gave me an 1858 Remington .44 cap-and-ball revolver about a year ago, and man, I'm hooked. A day in the backyard range is now a LOT more fun. There's a process involved, and you have to collect the necessary paraphernalia and learn some new skills - but I don't know why I never got into this before. I'd rather spend a day shooting black powder now than firing off my AR-15. Not to mention the fact that I can spend $20 on powder, lead balls, and patches and then shoot all day with half my investment left over for the next session.

If you haven't tried cap-and-ball revolvers yet, don't - you'll just end up with another addiction. Fortunately, it isn't an expensive one. I got the 1858 Remington clone (steel frame by Pietta) as a gift, bought a new 1860 Colt .44 clone for $250, and I have maybe $200 worth of assorted supplies for the both of them. I'm set for many hundreds if not thousands of shots with a couple of pounds of black powder and a couple of boxes of round balls.

Read all you can to do it safely and efficiently, but man, is this ever fun.

Pietta. Uberti used to be good, but double the price; for over a decade now Pietta has improved fit and finish and Uberti's QC has suffered somewhat.

For your first, I'd go with the Pietta Remington 1858, steel frame. Then maybe a Pietta Colt 1860, again steel frame. Brass frames are fine at lighter loads (which are plenty fun) but suffer after repeated full loads. Probably 80% of what I shoot out of my .44's (which are steel frame) are half loads anyway. No need for more when plinking.

Fairly meh. Big chunk of lead on a stubby little case, so not great muzzle velocity, but it did give give many years of good service knocking down fuzzy-wuzzies and Germans. You obviously want the Mk III bullet, because who doesn't want a cylindrical hollowpoint?

Damn shame. What state? I live in Kansas/Missouri and just got a $160 Pietta 1851 Navy shipped to my door.
>>
>>34065098
It's a .451 lead ball. With a hot load, it can do a lot of damage. Problem is that follow up shots are slow (single action), and smoke and noise are confusing in a self-defense situation. If it's all you have, it'll do the job, but for self-defense you should use a modern firearm.

I live in CA and have 3, all repo's. 2 1858's and a Colt 1851. The two Rem's have conversions, one 45acp, one 45LC. I like the '51 just like it is.
>>
>>34066377
Wait. I've heard of 45LC, but ACP sounds like you want your gun to explode
>>
>>34066389
Not at all. The conversion cylinder is made for the pressure, which isn't all that high anyway. The manufacturer advises lead bullets only. I've shot commercial ball and plated, but 185G SWC handloads run quite well, so that's generally what I shoot.

So what? I'd say my black powder pistol was for recreational shooting but I was desperately in fear for my life. If I had violent premeditated intent I'd have bought a Glock, but I'm just a sweet gentle soul at heart. Looks better in court.
>>
>>34065230
OTOH if you shoot the fuck out of it for fun and get competent, most any firearm becomes a natural extension of the shooter. Your assailant won't be expecting smoke and you can get surprisingly fast with a single action.

I might have to get a black powder rifle for SHTF hunting because you can fit a shitload of powder, bullets, and percussion caps in very little space compared to cartridge weapons.

This is a good point. Frontiersmen carried YEARS' worth of supplies with them. Granted, that's not six-mags-a-firefight burn rates like we might see in a modern military, but it's definitely useful for true SHTF.
