Mossberg MVP, it's compatible with DPMS pattern 308 mags in the LSS chassis. It's awesome, I like them so much more than AI pattern.

Do you have a Howa? Those rifles are amazing. I had one that I put in a B&C stock, and it was a great shooter.

Yeah, it's the varmint barrel Howa 1500 24" in .308 and I love it.
I'm using AICS mags (which i regret), I had to file 2 little divets in the bottom of the action to get the mags to lock. I should've just gotten pmags or the MDT mags, but I'm a sucker for metal.

round 1k for glass/rifle, seeing the price of what you mentioned I might change it up a bit.
>>
>>34059319

The rear of the bolt is kind of ugly. Otherwise, I'm perfectly happy with it. The action is a Savage clone, down to the accutrigger, but it has a Remington style safety.

The ONLY down side is that it's difficult to load a single round through the ejection port, since the follower on a pmag stops the bolt from closing.

I wanted something that could kill things from far away, total cost was about $2000.
>>
>>34059319
>>34059345

>it's difficult to load a single round through the ejection port

What you have to do is make sure the round seats in the mag.

But since it's so easy and fast to change the mags, it's not much of a down side.

The barrel is short, stout, and fluted (as is the bolt) and the bolt knob is enlarged and well portioned.
>>
>>34059363

>R700LR

I have a friend who just dropped one of those into a magpul stock. He's waiting for his dies to load for it and shoot it.

What kind of accuracy do you get out of it? How fast does it heat up?

His is in 300WM.

I got it put together just recently, haven't gotten to shoot it much yet.
Pic is my best group at 300 yards, the big squares are 1 inch.
I've been taking the shots pretty slow since the rum is a notorious barrel burner, probably haven't averaged more than 1 shot every 2 or 3 mins and cleaning the barrel every 5 shots or so. I'm not sure how fast it would heat up if I was shooting quicker.

I have the SWFA SS 3-15x42 on >>34058938 and it's an excellent scope for the money, I bought it on sale for ~$510 when it's usually $700.

However, the SWFA SS 10x42 is a cheaper alternative and it's quite good as well. $300 and it's fixed power, but frankly I rarely switch between magnifications anyway.

My howa 1500 in 6.5

I am only a consistent 2 moa shooter at 500 dping 6 shot groups. I manage some 1.2 moa sometimes.

Im using hornady 140 factory ammo.

I havent worked up a hand load yet.

Under 300 i am 1.5 moa all day.

My most expensive is the 8x55 hun because of brass price.
9mm, 38 and 300blk are my cheapest because i cast for them.

My 6.5 crredmoor is $1.15 for the first shot (new brass) and about $.45 every reload after using sierra 140 match kings, or berger vld

Name and branding. You can meet or exceed Remington accuracy and quality with Savage, Howa, hell even Mossberg rifles now.
>>
>>34059227
Another good way to go would be the Mossberg mvp in 5.56. it's not going to be laser accurate, but for less than 1k glass included you'll get a solid shooter out to 200yds in a cheap and easy to shoot cartridge. I'd be careful with Remington, their qc is fucking garbage

How do ppl shoot past 50 meters with m39? Do I just suck?

I consider myself an extremely proficient shot, but I don't see how it can be easy to shoot past 100 yards. Maybe it's the way my range is laid out? I get the feeling the angling is off, creating a sort of optical illusion. Also me and my pals I shoot with do not have a high end scope stand, just shitty binoculars.

Selling my house this year, and if everything goes right im going to be making a call to mike at tac ops to build me a rifle. Probably a Tango(custom mcmillan remington varminter stock) or Sierra(mcmillan m40a1 stock). Most likely going with a 20inch but going to ask if his 18in barrels can make it out to 1000yd under 10in. My current set up maxes out to 870~ before crapping out on me accuracy wise(18in groups are the best the rifle is capable of). I would like to touch 1000 without being anal with my reloads, and tac ops rifles are .25moa with factory fed gold medal match. This is one of those holy grail type guns for me, and its a 1-2 year wait so i dont mind for quality.

I doubt it, but any anons have experience with these rifles?

>>
>>34067673
I think my targets are just too small perhaps. If you tried it using my conditions you may have a hard time too.

Then again I don't shoot often enough, and when I use the m39 it's usually 20 rounds at a time. I think i'll put more rounds per session. It is a lovely rifle and very fun to shoot.
>>
>>34067915
Yeah I mean i haven't gone often enough I think, also I just shoot paper and for grouping.

i can get .25moa with factory Rem Premier 175smk thru my bolt gun and it only took 2 days to get to my dealer. AIAT with an aftermarket bbl chambered by stuteville precision.

Now if you just want the gun because of the e-peen status then by all means. Ive never heard anything bad besides the wait. I didnt go with a custom cause I just dont have the patience for that. I can barely stand the 6-10 mo wait for my suppressors much less 2 yrs.

The sights are calibrated for heavy ball.

If you're using spam can light ball, it's not going to be zero'd properly. Also, light ball consistency is SHIT. Worse than Tulammo or Wolf.
>>
>>34067699

That's pretty far out of my league, but there are factory guns these days that approach that accuracy. Tikka, Savage, even Remington; obviously not the bog standard rifles. Custom gun smiths are really losing ground to modern CNC machining.

Glass will be equally important, and something like that deserves a S&B in my opinion.

308 will get you to 800 yds, and you can get cheap NATO spec plinking ammo at Walmart for $10/box.

If plinking isn't your thing though, and you only want to do precision shooting, then the more boutique calibers are more optimal. To be fair, most of them are barrel burners though, esp 6.5 Creedmoor, so you wouldn't want to plink with it (another pro for 308).

My mix of calibers for precision are:

5.56 NATO for ~500 yds and in (though it isn't trans sonic until 900+ wind is a bitch at those ranges)

308 for ~900 yards and in.

300 Win Mag out to 1 mile.

6.5 is better than 308, but I have all my bases covered already so I've stayed away from it.

I had a hunting rifle before I went for a bull barrel, my light barrel allowed me to go for 2 shots and then wait for 5 minutes (in spring).
With my new rifle I don't give a fuck now, I can go for a 100rounds session in 2h with no change on my groups, even if the barrel is hot.

The Boyd's Tacticool/Varmint Pro for the Mark II looks and feels awesome but it's a bit flimsy where it counts. If you search you can find some instances of breakage between the magwell and trigger guard. I filled the whole middle area up with tons of JB Weld and aluminum pillars, pic related.

I don't have pics of groups but it's about a 1.5 MOA rifle as shot at 50y and 100y. Not bad considering how shockingly cheap they are.

Not in a measurable or appreciable way. If anything, it probably wears it faster with a lighter bullet.

That's a ~1 MOA rifle with match ammo. There's nothing inherently INACCURATE about the nugget action. The Ruskies were just shit at QA/QC.

The Finns put excellent barrels on them and much better, tighter stocks, as well as a decent 2 stage 3.5# trigger. It's a world apart from a bog standard 91/30.

I'm thinking about getting a precision rifle. I'm debating between a Howa 1500 and a Tikka T3. I'm not sure whether to have it chambered in .300 Win Mag or 6.5 CM. Google doesn't really help, so any feedback would be appreciated.
>>
>>34069294
It is a toss up between yhe howa and the tikka . Both are great, both have great chassis options.

Caliber, go 6.5. Unless your hunting elk at 1200yrds 300winmag is just a harder recoiling, more expensive, barrel burner.

>>
>>34067736
Luckily I don't have the folding stock. Don't actually know why anyone would go for it if they had the option. I am alittle upset they have their own proprietary buffer tube size though, so I can't switch out the stock for any of the many available options with a normal buffer tube.
>>
>>34059537
You really shouldn't be cleaning your barrel so often. It'll hurt your accuracy more than help it. Your barrel will let you know when it needs to be cleaned, and if you're shooting match grade stuff it's DEFINITELY not every 5 rounds

I appreciate the replies, I'll definitely go with 6.5 CM. However I'm still kind of in a toss up over the rifle, what's this I'm hearing about tikkas opening up after a few shots? Do they heat up faster than other brands of rifles? The only bolt guns I have right now are my Rem 710 for durr, and an M39 that I regretfully impulse bought.
>>
>>34069941
No, the problem with tikka's stringing out is because of the aluminum bedding block they use.it heats up and expands really quickly and opens up your shots. Luckily there are cheap upgrades available, or if you get a new stock for it you don't have to worry about it at all

>>
>>34069941

A Howa 1500 will come from the factory with a pinned barrel and milled recoil lug integrated into the receiver. Mechanically its accuracy potential is higher than the washer-style recoil lugs like a Remington or Savage.
My Howa 1500 Targetmaster shot great, I recommend it, as it is affordable and comes in 6.5CM.

You can buy a factory barreled action and drop it into a Bell and Carlson stock or MDT chassis yourself easy enough, or a factory package:

So I'm thinking about getting into precision shooting. I'm looking at a Ruger American to practice with, because I don't want to drop a lot of money on a nice rifle, then shoot out the barrel trying to get good at long range. Would it be better to learn using .308 or 6.5 CM?

>>
>>34070700
I think barrel life is an overblown consideration in most cases. The cost of a new barrel pales in comparison to the cost of the ammo required to shoot a barrel out.

Worst case scenario, you'd be needing to replace a 6.5CM barrel after 3000 rounds. At ~$1.30/round, that's $3,900. If you've spent $3,900 on ammo, how much does $300-400 more for a new barrel really matter?

That said, you can find 168 grain FGMM .308 for basically $1/round most of the time, and over 3,000+ rounds that adds up to $900 savings over the same round count. And you'd still have quite a bit of barrel life left afterward.

tl;dr .308 is more economical
>>

>>
Couple thoughts:
.18 LR is criminally underated.
People put bipods on rifles which make them less accurate due to flex, harmonics and shitting up technique.
95% of people don't know the fundamentals of long range shooting (see retarded cross armed technique, as practiced by everyone including military).
Rifle bedding is the biggest improvement that can be made to almost all rifles, few people do it and it's cheap.

>Mossberg patriot doesn't really group better than 1.5 MOA

I've got an MVP LC, the factory Mossberg chassis rifle. It's under 1 MOA with 168 gr FGMM, but just barely. The action is just a savage clone, they actually use the same barrel threads going into the receiver.

The accutrigger clone on mine is great too.

I imagine Mossberg puts a little more effort into this model though. The bolt and barrel are both factory fluted.

I know not exactly PSG material, but I'm thinking about buying a .300WM for an Elk hunt I'm planning for next year. A local shop has an older model Rem700 for $560 with 3 bosses of ammo for free. You probably shouldn't be elk hunting beyond 600 yards, and if you're just shooting targets out to 1k, you probably want a thicker barrel. If it's just for elk hunting, go grab a tikka T3 lite in 300WM

60 rounds of ammo is barely anything, don't use that as justification for one rifle over another. Also, 300WM isn't particularly a barrel burner but it ain't 308, so I'd check the throat.

Previous owner evidently bought the gun and 100 rounds then only shot 40 of them. I've never been Elk hunting, so 300WM seems like a good caliber choice. A friend from previous job had to shoot one at 1350 a year and a half ago, and his 300WM put it down.

Also, going to use it as an excuse to hunt other big North American animals, never shot anything bigger than large white tails and hogs.

Would a Savage Mk II be a good 22 for practicing technique at shorter ranges and lower cost
>>
>>34084674
If you're a half-MOA shooter in field environments with a reliable LRF that you're familiar with, then go for it. I'm just trying to suggest that you don't set yourself up for gut-shotting an elk. The 300WM should have enough energy, I'm not debating that. It's a nice all around cartridge but I'd personally choose a 7mm RM over it for less recoil.
>>
>>34084798
I was looking at the 7mm, and after shooting one I found I didn't enjoy it. May have just been the rifle, but it didn't feel like a gun I could shoot over and over. The 300WM while more recoil, felt more like "my" gun, you know? And I think a good brake and a heavier stock would mitigate the recoil down to hot 308 levels, wouldn't it?

> never claimed to be a Half-MOA shooter, much less in field conditions. I just want a rifle that has the potential to be the gun I do that with and still carry enough energy to bring down an Elk/Bear/Mule deer at a distance.

Hey /k/ anyone have experience with a mcmillan m40a1 stock?

Im planning to put my 20in remington heavy contour barrel on it.

Im just concerned about the weight and balance. Ive done the math and it seems im coming out to 10-11lbs with optic. And im just hoping its not front heavy and the balance is off. My thinking is a 20inch should be less front heavy than say a 24inch, but its the heavy contour(varmint profile? Mine is from a sps ssd-ac). Hopefully its not crazy front heavy.

Ill be using this for an all around hunter/shooter rifle and hope to hit 900-1000yds with it. Ive gotten good groups(8.3inches at 800 yards) using the factory hogue stock it came with so hopefully a full bedded mcmillan stock will bring those groups smaller. I thought about changing the barrel, but honestly, mine shoot .5inches at 100yds with good ammo, so i think i dont need to shelve money out for that. Ill maybe get a timney trigger if the stick doesnt improve my groups as much as i think i will. My stock trigger feels fine to me. All ive done to the rifle was add a plastic knob cover to make it easier to cycle the bolt, and have a swfa 10xhd with seekins low rings.

I have a win70 featherweight that weighs 8lbs with optic, so a couple of more pounds wont kill me. I exclusively use my win70 as a hunter, but i just refinished the wood and now it looks too pristine to shoot lmao so ill keep it as a home decoration and hang it on my wall. Plus its 30-06 and im kind of tired of reloading ammo. My rem 700 shoots hornady match 168 bthp like a boss at sub 500yds, and FGMM shoots the best groups for me out to 800yds. I want to stick to factory rounds from now on. My win 70 only eats particular reloads for precice .3inch groups at 100.

Is the mcmillan stock suitable for off hand? I thought about the remington varminter by them, but i prefer narrow grip and forearm, and the weight seemed the same. I just wish they included in descriptions where the balance point will be with certain barrels.
>>
>>34084921
So, speaking of a hunting 300WM, obviously there are a ton of options, but is the Rem700 really one of the best options? everyone seems to say either it or the Weatherby or the Tikka.
>>
>>34084428

If it's just a regular old BDL, it'll be accurate enough to 500, maybe 600 yds. 300WM is plenty of bullet.

Just be sure to zero it for a cold bore shot, 300WM will heat up and shift POI VERY fast.
>>
>>34084696

You won't get any useful wind call practice, but if you're just getting used to a trigger break and holding the rifle, then yes.
>>
>>34085368

>but is the Rem700 really one of the best options?

A 5R or Sendero are both excellent choices, better than a Walmart Remington.

However, a standard R700 is usually a 2 MOA rifle. I wouldn't push that much more than 400 or 500 yds max.
>>
>>34085600
5R/Sendero? Sorry, unfamiliar with these.
>>
>>34085776
Just looked them up, Sendero seems more my speed.

Would a better option be buying parts and having them assembled? I don't own tools to do that, but have a really good gunsmith decently close to me.

Does your stock have a cheek riser?

These MDT LSS chassis require them.
>>
>>34086122
Not that guy, but I don't use one. However, I have a wide head and high cheekbones. Didn't need one with a Daniel Defense stock and I just got a Magpul UBR yesterday and I don't don't need it.
>>
>>34086122
Just use a magpul prs butt stock
>>
>>34086257

The PRS requires a fixed stock adapter on the MDT LSS.

I just use the cheekriser for a CTR stock and it's the perfect height.

LSS is more geared towards ultra light builds, rather than super precision applications. I consider my 700 to be a bug-out bolt gun.

what velocities are yall getting with your 6.5CM's? I was getting pressure signs at ~2850ft/s on 140's (Nosler RDFs) with RL16 and I think I'm going to have to settle around 2750ft/s. Velocity seemed quite consistent but that 5 shot group hit on the cardboard and punched it all out so I never got the true grouping.

Howa 1500 in .308 is basically done.
Going to zero next Tuesday, then develop a load.
Thinking 178gr ELD-X/ELD-M bullets. Going to have to see how much pressure this brass (ADI) can handle, but I'm thinking of starting around 45gr of ADI AR2208 powder.
Once I find max pressure, I'll get an average for FPS with my chronograph, and make a dope card.

Anyone else hate how Harris bipod feet spin in place? Like as soon as you load in to the bipod, the feet want to spin around.
That and the rubber just isn't very grippy.
Any viable alternatives to the stock standard feet? Would prefer it be usable on all surfaces (concrete, dirt, wood, metal)
>>
>>34097719
It would be more accurate to say they are more difficult to make accurate than bolt guns. While any given bolt gun is usually going to be more accurate than a semi in the same price range, this isn't always true. Ultimately, semi's can be made as accurate as a bolt rifle, however it will usually cost quite a bit more
>>
>>34097974
I don't think you can stop that happening because the extensions will turn inside the shafts no matter which feet you have installed.

However if you were to change to an asymmetrical foot like a claw-type, or a spike foot, it wouldn't be able to rotate any longer but it would slide more easily on concrete.

Good looking setup, very similar to what I was using for a while. That rifle shot GREAT, good luck with your setup.

>>34099975

I try to stop shooting and let my barrel cool as soon as I experience mirage, especially on my 300 WM, since it's quite a barrel burner of a cartridge.

On the other hand, suppressor mirage is VERY frustrating; one of these days I'll invest in a cover. They're such a PITA to take on and off though, and you don't want a cover on a "tactical" carbine that you'll be shooting fast. It'll overheat the can quickly, especially on an SBR.
