Also posted in recent acquisitions, but I'm gonna ask a question this time.

What kind of choke should I get, and about what should I expect to pay?

Also

Where can I find a good deal on target loads online? I'm willing to drop enough to get 250, but I would *really* prefer free shipping. I've skimmed ammoseek and gunbot

One of these days I'll get an 1897.
>>
>>34057390
I feel like such a moron. When my great grandfather died my siblings and cousins all got to take one of his guns. He had an old 1897. It was stuck with the slide back, but younger me thought that it would cost too much money to fix so I took his pre 64 Winchester 94. My cousin that took the 1897 fixed it the night he got it. . .
>>
>>34057390
Just get the cimmeron repro
They are good quality and you will spend twice as much on parts and work when you get a real 1897 because half the spring will be worn out or it won't cycle right.
>>

>>

Mossberg 500. The thing is, I don't want a rifled slug barrel. I want a smooth bore for shot and rifled slugs. Something like the sights on a Ruger 10/22 you know the ones that fold down would be perfect.
>>
>>34057433
Isn't the Cimarron repro just a rebranded Chinese import?
>>
>>34057433
It's still worth it to get a real one though. Mine was made in 1898, runs fine, and was $375. That's less than the Cimmarons run, and better quality.

If you can afford replacing or repairing half of the 87 parts then go ahead and get an original.
Also be sure to get the chamber reamed to make it a true 2.75 inch chamber.
The Cimarron new ones are pretty good quality, usually needs a little polishing on the rough edges. The early ones were almost non functional and required a lot of effort to pump.
>>
I know little about boomsticks. What's a good one? I hear the new 870s are outclassed. Should I get an Ithaca 37 with wood furniture? I love their aesthetic. Looking to spend $300-$500. I'm Californian btw

If your shooting trap get a IC, shooting skeet a Modified , ducks and waterfowl a full, turkey, get a turkey choke , slugs, rifled choke.

Thanks, I remember seeing it as a kid and even then the finish was basically gone. It was in a closet that had a moisture problem and that's when it got pitted with rust. I just want to make a fun shooter out of it, something I can pass down at some point. I'm not interested in keeping it all original or using it for bird hunting, I have a 24" 930 for that.

>What kind of choke should I get, and about what should I expect to pay?

Depends on what you're shooting. IC is a good all-around choke for Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. I also keep a Skeet choke (between Cyl and IC) on me when I go shooting, but almost never switch chokes in the middle of a round.

I would get an IC and stick with it for a while if you're shooting clays. The largest impact on your shot pattern is the shell you're shooting anyway, and every gun is different so it isn't even a matter of buying the most expensive ammo, it's a matter of trying a bunch of different ammo and finding out what is best in your gun.

For good quality chokes you're looking at $40-$80 or even higher if you want to get fancy. Briley makes great chokes.

>Where can I find a good deal on target loads online?

Been looking for months now, and shipping just kills any deal I've ever found. I shoot at the same place every Friday, and asked some of the regulars where they get their ammo. I finally got lucky talking to one, who 'had a guy' that gets him ammo, and he offered to call him and ask if he was taking new customers. Turns out he's business partners with a distributor in another city that is laying groundwork for expansion in my area. I have 10 cases (2500 rounds) of Fiocchi being delivered to my house on Saturday at $60/case.

So tl;dr start going to a range regularly, be friendly and make conversation with shooters that obviously shoot a lot and find out where they get their ammo. Shotgun ammo just weighs too much to find good deals online.

Obviously if someone knows different I'm happy to be wrong on this one.

I won't deny that's a great deal. I don't know much about NSI so I can't speak to the quality. What site is that on?

$60/case is a pretty good deal for the Fiocchi ammo I'm getting. I'm happy with .24c/rd if it means there's less of a chance of ammo causing issues in the middle of a tournament.

For general dickery and non-competitive clay shooting though yeah get the NSI as long as it doesn't cause malfunctions. That handicap load might be low-recoil which some semi-autos have a problem with, but that being said Rio's handicap loads cycle fine though my A400 Xcel (gas), UGB25 (inertia), and Remington 1100 (gas).

Rate my shotgun and setup.
Barrels are 28.5in and 19in, the receiver is held on with tape and hoseclamps because I was to poor at the time to buy taps and screws.

It has a glorious all weather galvanized finish, non-removable sling, and a damn fine recoil pad made from some foam my computer shipped in.

The stock was precisely hand tooled with a hole saw and a fillet knife and features a custom duct tape grip.

No choke and the sight beads are made from Legos that were tied and taped on (surprisingly do not fly off when firing).

$400 and i want to replace the furniture, barrel, extension tube, and side saddle.

i'm not going to pay in excess of $600 modifying a shotgun just because it's police buyback. if it was one of these express magnums for $220, i'd jump on it. but they've been out of stock for quite some time.

Why would you bother adding an extension to a 7rd 870 and why change the barrel? The furniture I understand but maybe you should tell us what the end goal of the gun is. Otherwise the king of beaters, the mossberg 88 security goes for $200 all the time and takes most of the 500 series parts

you don't understand. anon posted a 20in barrel shotgun with a 7 round tube. i posted an 18in barrel shotgun with a 6 round tube. i want an 18in barrel without having a tube extend past the barrel.

basically, it's going to start out as a home defense gun. down the road, ie duck season, i'll end up buying a new barrel for it so i can change out the chokes for trap/skeet, turkey, and dove. i want it to be a magnum, so i can use 3in shells for duck. but for right now it'll just be a range toy/home defense gun.

i've looked into 88's and frankly i don't like the safety on them. if i was going to get a mossberg it'd be a 500 or a 590 because i like the receiver safety better.

If you saw down a larger one, then yes you'll need paperwork and a 200 dollar tax stamp. If you buy that short, it's usually classified an Any Other Weapon or AOW and you don't need any paperwork besides a normal firearm purchase. That one in the webm looks like it's under 13 inches. Look on a site like Paladin arms. Heads up, they're usually very expensive.

Have you never communicated with another human being about anything mechanical before?

That's a very, very common expression.
>>
>>34074138
>>34074104

OK.

The force required to lower the barrels on a gun with internal hammers is proportional to the force required to cock said hammers.

In fact, the work required (force x distance) will be the same for an equivalent O/U and S/S, except that the smaller gape of a S/S means the distance is smaller than for an O/U, meaning the force must be larger. There are no O/Us I know that will self-cock from the weight of their barrels alone.

if the barrels are only 20", then as well as the weight of the barrels being less than that for 30" barrels, the CofG will be closer to the knuckle, so the moment they can exert to cock the gun will be less.

there are no shotguns that I have experience of with internal hammers that can cock both barrels from the weight of the barrels alone. I'm willing to be educated - perhaps a film clip of such?

No amount of "slicking up" (and you guys clearly missed the sarcasm) the action either by polishing surfaces or lubricating will make an iota of difference if the work required to cock the hammers is greater than the work that can be provided from the weight of the barrels and their travel.
>>
>>34074240
(cont)
Forgot to add. Please don't offer any videos of "easy opening" or "self opening" shotguns as were popular in some of the turn-of-the-century Best English guns (also mocked as "hard-to-close") as these had an additional spring, cocked when the gun was closed, to help with it opening and was used to help with faster loading on driven pheasant days.

in fact, the mere fact that these easy-opening guns were invented supports my argument that the weight of the barrels themselves alone was inadequate to open and cock the gun.

Yeah, but is it because new 870 build quality is garbage, or is the 500 a better design? I recall a few years ago the prevailing opinion being the 500 was only for poorfags.

I also never liked the 870 safety, tang safety is superior.

This isn't 2 guage anon, this is a punt gun, it's almost literally a cannon, black powder, no metallic cartridge, hurling a whole pound of birdshot.
Back around and before the turn of the 20th century you'd get small fleets of these fucks killing entire flocks of game birds of all sort with salvo fire

>>

>>
>>34081884
you're right that it redirects to the page FOR punt guns, absolutely. That being said, the second sentence on the page, "Punt guns were usually custom-designed and so varied widely, but could have bore diameters exceeding 2 inches (51 mm) and fire over a pound (≈ 0.45 kg) of shot at a time.", means they don't actually have a gauge rating, they're more like cannons, and you'd describe them by weight of shot.

before rem quality went to shit they were equal. its the ford/chevy or ar/ak debate.
now that rem has declined while moss stayed consistent theres no point in a new express.
both shotguns are for poorfags you can easily find either for under 400. now you can get a shotgun for 200 but a legit 500 or 870 is still a "cheap" gun.

Then for some reason I started to not mind it, and came to like it. Eventually I actually shot one, and loved it. Didn't think I could ever love another semiauto as much as my dad's old 1100.

So now I own one.

Oh I'm sorry, I read that as you wanted a shotgun for plinking and using all of that.

From what I've found, Fiocchi ammo is great for the price. Also for good birdshot, Winchester Super Velocity is great. It's the same price per round as Walmart bulk but 150 fps faster.

Can someone break down the usual uses for the different gauges? It seems to me that 20gauge and up can all be used for the same thing, and 28/.410 are just used for small birds
>>
>>34092090
There are tournaments that are gauge-specific. That's mostly where I see sub-gauges, but I do know people hunt all kinds of birds with 20 and 12. Everyone in my family hunts dove with a 12ga.

Only time I see .410 hunting is for kids or people just learning that really can't handle the recoil.

I've heard of people hunting with 28 gauge just to make it more of a challenge.

Other than that, I don't know of any 'usual' uses for the different gauges, there isn't really an established 'dove gauge' or 'pheasant gauge'.
>>
I'm the guy who bought 400rds of this stuff a few days ago, finally got out and shot it.

It's quality ammo, absolutely no problems and at $3.49/box I'm very happy with my purchase. The site that was selling it has now sold out, but I'm glad I got the amount I did. I was shooting clays and completely vaporizing them with no issues after a slight learning curve for the thrower.
>>
>>34092320
Good to hear, I was hoping you would report back. I'm the anon that said I would order some if I hadn't just ordered 10 cases. Also the shipping wasn't as good for me.

My order came in here >>34086423

Shot them in a tournament this morning. Pretty happy with them, they seemed to pattern consistently and had no issues with cycling. Recoil was lighter even though they're still 1250fps. I didn't win my class but that's all me and not the shell.

I put 50rds downrange and I'm fairly sore, definitely gonna get a bruise but I had fun doing it.

On an unrelated note, I really don't recommend this Wolf .45. After running half a box through my 1911 I had a catastrophic jam that took minutes to clear. I figured it was just a feed error (last round in the mag too) and so I tried to load it a second time, causing the same jam that was also nearly impossible to get unstuck. After the second time I just tossed the round and made it through the rest of the box without issue, but my best guess is that the round was out of spec and too big for the chamber.

Glad to hear you like your ammo though, good luck in your next comp
>>
One of you anons with the h&r pardner pumps humor me a moment.

Someone brought one in to "fix". I haven't found anything wrong with it, just a lack of knowledge how to assemble it.

Anyway, how far in does the end cap screw? I'm not sure if this is an aftermarket cap, barrel, or both. but there's maybe 1/4" of thread holding the barrel on. Big red flag in my book, but again, not sure if its factory, Its probably stacked tolerances pushing it back out courtesy of the chinks i assume. I'll probably need to trim the barrel collar off a bit to fully seat the cap.

Also does the ejector spring normally look bent out of shape? Looking at a new part it doesn't look nearly as flimsy, but it might be a variant.
>>
>>34091700
Yes they are fine.

If your just shooting american or single trap you dont need a semi.

You will only have one rouns loaded at any time. Even if you have a semi auto , you only load a single round.
>>
>>34057421
A pre 64 winchester 94 is a pretty good score anon
>>
>Not one bolt action shotty in this thread

I bought this gun as a meme but I absolutely love it, I took the memey red dot off (mount broke) and think I'll leave it off.

Cut the barrel down to 18.5 and it's a nice sized gun.

Surprisingly super reliable as well, desu doubt I'll ever buy another shotgun. My friend bought a skeet launcher and that's fun to fuck around with and the ammo is stupidly cheap.

Might want to have an instructor look at how you mount your gun. I use to think getting a bruised shoulder and being sore was just part of it, but once I fixed my mount I never bruise and am hardly sore, even after 250+ rds today.

>good luck in your next comp
Thanks, I actually ended up getting a punch for 3rd place today. There were more shooters in my class than I thought so the punch count went up. I'm entering just the 5-stand event of a tournament tomorrow and hopefully will get my third punch and be one away from ranking up. Class E can be frustrating because there's always one or two guys that show up who have been shooting for years in charity events and unregistered tournaments, then finally enter a registered tournament and post insanely high scores. Someone turned in a 90 on one of the courses today before I even took my first shot.
>>
>>34094918

>>
>>34095070
I'd get something like that but desu there's no cheap mounting solution for it, getting holes tapped isn't worth it on a $120 shotgun honestly.
>>
>>34074856
do they make a heat shield that fits the 590 7 shot? the only ones i found online is one directly from mossberg which only fits the 6 or 9 shot.

the other one POSSIBLY is the aimpro one for the heavy barrel but i dont know if it will clear the barrel part that goes around the magazine.

i bought the one from mossberg and where youre supposed to screw it together under the barrel, is directly on the part of the barrel that attaches the ring that goes around the magazine.
