SAS, Royal Logistic Corps/Royal Engineer ATOs (Ammunition Technical Officers - essentially EOD technicians), possibly elements of the Special Forces Support Group. Could be spooks deployed from the Special Reconnaissance Regiment, but they'd likely be doing plain clothes operations in assistance of Counter Terrorism Officers (CID officers), rather than door kicking with the Counter Terrorism Specialist Firearms Officers like the aforementioned units are.

I think that, when they say the SAS are going to do undercover work, they mean that the local authorities aren't going to be proactively announcing that 'Armed Officers and SAS personnel conducted a raid of an address in blah blah blah...'. They're doing overt work, but they're not being overt about their presence (although why they wouldn't get them to blend in by giving them CTSFO uniforms makes no sense since anyone with a bit of nonce about these things knows what the SAS look like).

Why the fuck would they waste time waiting for uniforms and gear to be delivered when they're chasing terrorists. Operational speed is paramount.

They went to the effort of sticking 'SFO' patches on their sleeves. That means they care at least a little bit about concealing their true identity. SAS integrating with specialist police firearms teams and maintaining a low profile (because the whole army on the streets thing has always been a sticky issue, obviously less so atm given the activation of Op Temperer) has always been the primary plan of operation, should an event like this arise and they actually be called on. You think a bit of calculated, forward thinking was too much to ask for? Someone was clever enough to order SFO patches but not clever enough to ask for some uniforms on one of the many joint training exercises?

They are likely SAS or Tier1 supersecret squirrel types employed by an intelligence branch. The ripped arms, tattoos, tan (and gear obviously) marks him quite clealry as an operator. Even using standard police style gear it would be quite obvious.

Uniforms are easy to swap and help as an immediate indicator in IFF.

However, setting up your first line rig with your gear where you're used to it being, takes time.
And they're unlikely to have multiple sets of that kind of gear in different colours to match who they're dressing up as.

The ones who would theoretically be trying to recapture and disarm the nuke that was stolen by some rogue state, if it ever came to that. All you ever hear out of the MODs mouth is 'muh SF secret, no talky about SF matters, muh SF blacker than black'. But they can't wrangle them up a few uniforms for domestic operations? I'm sure whatever their true motivations are regarding SF secrecy still apply here - and yet the media have been getting pictures of people who are OBVIOUSLY SF all day.
