My grandfather is a WWII history enthusiast and gun lover. He doesn't have much money, but he still let me live with him for free the entire time I was in college. I graduated years ago and live on my own. I also just got a kickass promotion that requires me to move across the country, and the money is great. I was thinking I could buy him a really interesting WWII milsurp weapon as a way to show my appreciation before I move away.

I have limited knowledge of WWII guns. There are only a few I've researched due to my own personal interest... I tried those first, but I'm coming up dry.

>can't afford a P-08
>all the nazi P-38s I find are way overpriced
>same with type-II Vis 35's
>every Swedish Mauser (M94, M96, M38) I find is absolutely haggard with the bore shot out

What other good guns should I look at? Euro or US only, no Slav or Nip stuff please. The budget is $800 preferably, up to $1000 for a good deal.

you can find nazi p38s for 6-800 all day

just get him a fucking garand you cuck, youre american arent you? if not, get whatever you want

also pic related are great and beautiful and can be had for $300-$800 depending on condition
>>
I'm fairly sure you could find a nice M1 Garand for that price point, unless you're a diehard wehraboo.
>>
i would also suggest garand or possibly a m1 carbine if the garand is too cumbersome for him to shoot. i know what a budget is but i would add a few hundred more dollars to open your choices. you have a good job now, you can afford it.
>>
>>34049349
>more choices

What like?
>>
>>34049364
I think another question is what condition are you looking for?
>>
>>34049364
by more choices, i meant examples/ conditions. for example, you could buy a garand for $800, but its going to be a shooter. a garand at $1200 will most likely be in better condition.
>>
>>34049406
I understand. I'd rather it be a nicer example with matching parts.
>>
>>34049207
Do you know his preferences? If not, it would be great if you could find a ww2 documentary that focuses on weaponry and watch it with him. He might have a ragging boner for a particular gun and then the gift would be extra special.
>>
>>34049207
French shit is cheap when you can find it usually.
The ammo is almost always unobtanium though.

As for specific guns.
A Garand, an M1 Carbine, some of the odder shit (those Mauser made Hi-Powers are apparently about $300 when you can find them)
Enfield revolvers (and Webley Mk IVs) are almost always around $5-600, and often times have a nice holster with them.
Mauser HScs are very nice and usually around $4-500 as well when you can find them (though you'd have to do some searching for an early date one)
There were tons of surplus WW1 oddballs that were converted to 9mm Luger for use by Germany towards the end of the war (Steyr Hahns in 9mm Luger for instance) as well as shitloads of .32s that were personally purchased by officers for fighting/CC pieces.

Do some research and just don't buy something ridiculously well known like a Thompson M1927 or an MP-40 or some shit and you should be fine.
>>
also how old is your grandpa? can he even shoot rifles? you are either underage posting here or your grandpa is nearing a century old
>>
>>34050089
My family had kids young. I'm in my mid 20s and he's in his 60s. He can shoot rifles fine.
>>
>>34050103
>>34050103
fucking shit your grandpa is younger than my dad
>>
>>34050135
You're just older than me.
>>
>>34050165

only by 5 years

that being said, i still vote for garand. its hard to get more iconic or patriotic if you are american

and it will actually be fairly easy for him to shoot. low recoil and easy sights for old eyes
>>
>>34050713
Not OP but soon to be in the market for a garand. Should I go through the process of getting qualified for a CMP rifle or just go check out various gun stores/gunshows until I find something that looks to be in good condition for a decent price?
>>
>>34051004
do both, theres not much to getting qualified for the CMP, they dont really have much right now though but youll want to be ready to go when they restock.

check private sales on gunbroker, use a local FFL with reasonable fees (under $40) to transfer, or keep your eyes out at local gun shops but the prices will probably be shit, you never know though. my local pawn shop had a nice H&R on consignment for $900
>>
>>34049207
What about a Webley or m1917 revolver?
>>
>>34050713
Where is everyone finding garands under $1000?
>>
>>34052878
CMP or Armslist I imagine.
>>
>>34049207
You can get him a semi auto Berreta 38. Or a Semi auto Suomi KP/31. Parts kits are super cheap and receiver templates (with the tube blank) are available, all you need is a dremel and a drill press and a gunsmith to headspace it
>>
>>34053498
CMP? What's that?
>>
>>34055572

>>
>>34055671
Maybe. It's a poor condition rebuild with lots of new parts though. Not really ideal in these circumstances.
>>
>>34055843
it is brand fucking new condition everything is refinished to new condition idiot, the receiver itself will have pitting but that will all be under a brand new finish of parkerization
>>
>>34056423
Funny that they felt the need to put FAIR on it then huh?

Also there's very little historical value in a rifle that's been entirely replaced apart from its pitted receiver.
>>
>>34049207
c96
>>
>>34056448
FIELD*

Even worse.
>>
>>34056475
wasn't that WWI dude?
>>
>>34056630
Yeah and also way outside his budget.
>>
>>34056784
You can get decent C96s for less than 1000. Especially Astra clones
