I carry a 1939 walther ppk in .32 acp, a hand me down from my grandad. I like how it can easily hide in my front pocket. The ammo is kind of pricy though.
I've been eye fucking the M&P shield in .45 at PSA though lately.

What are /k/'s recommendations for a subcompact semi-auto in 9mm? I've liked the way the XDS felt in my hand the last time I was at a shop, but haven't had a chance to rent and fire one and I'm rather unwilling to give Springfield my money. Shield M&P was nice too, but I had trouble racking it.

Looking to spend no more than $550 on the gun itself. I'm currently a nogunz looking for something I can eventually use carried once I'm satisfied with the extent of my training.

Carry the Shield 9 during the colder months and now its warmer, I just picked up a LCP II and apendex carry with extra mag.

I love my XDS, have had it about a year, have 1000+ rounds through it of all brands/weights/makes with 0 problems. My dad has a shield and my sister has a ruger lc9 and ive shot them both quite a bit but the XD is by far my favorite. It is a tad heavier but imo that makes it better as far as recoil management and followup shots. XDS also comes with standard fiber optic front sight and a hard case, unlike the others^ that come in a cardboard box. I paid $400 for mine, paid a bit extra for the gray polymer version, a standard black on black goes for about $350ish these days. But you can get shields really cheap these days, easily find them for $300, have seen them as low as $250 on sale. Honestly, factoring in politics when buying something you will trust your life with is pretty retarded.

XDS and shield are both good options, it all comes down to your subjective needs/wants, and even then you really wont know many of those until youve had quite a bit of trigger time. Also, learning to shoot pistols on a sub-compact has a much steeper learning curve than if you were to start with a 22lr or full size pistol. I'd highly recommend you taking a basic pistol course
