Redpill me on .50 Beowulf and .458 Socom. They look insane and cool as shit, but what is it like to shoot these rifles? is it worth $1+ a round?

I don't see the difference between them and a box fed 12 gauge shooting slugs for a fraction of the cost.

Anyone sell and .458 Socom cartridge that is pointy and made out of solid hardened steel? not just a steel penetrator, but the whole bullet through hardened steel?
>>
>>34047550
If you are thinking an AP round I think it would be way too slow to be effective

What is shell deformation for $200, Alex.
>>
>>34047148
>fraction of the cost

I guess you're right, 9/10ths is still a fraction. But slugs are nearly $1 a round, also to change a basic AR into one of these 2 calibers it's still close to the same peice as a saiga 12.
>>
I've fired them both, and they are fun as he'll.

You definitely need to build the rifle around the rounds though. Good compensatory or muzzle breaks and recoil Springs are a must.
>>
>>34047893
What is Shell Deformation actually?
>>
>>34047075

.50 Beowulf is only made my one company, so it is pricey. 458 is not saami so there is that.

I'm planing on a short 458 for very brushey bacon acquisition.
>>
>>34049607
If under spring tension (in a magazine) for extended periods of time, the plastic shells get crushed, deform, and could not feed or not work. Brass doesn't have that issue.
>>
A lot of bullshit here. If you reload .458 is sweet. And cheap to load. Has tons of projectiles you can load. I have a ar15 pistol variant with no muzzle break just a noveske pig type device. The heaviest hitter loads still have manageable recoil out of a 8 inch barrel. About like a 20g shotgun. My favorite hd tool. Really fun and pretty effective blaster.
>>
>>34047624
This. AP Beowulf kinda misses the point. Same with memeout. They're effective as all hell against unarmored targets because that's what they're designed for.
>>
>>34048286
I've heard tell that you use the same springs but just a massive buffer.
>>
>>34051208
defend your home and the six in every direction as well when that round goes through all of them

As someone with an MKA1919, the mags do not cause shell deformation even after over a month.

I think it could possibly happen if you had the full mag inserted on a closed bolt, but since I sleep with it I tend to leave it with an open bolt with the mag inserted. That way I won't blow my nuts off accidentally, but I can close the bolt and have a 12 gauge ready to go instantly.

Shoot .45-70 instead.

Same power, dirt cheap and easy to reload with a $30 kit.
>>
I want a .50 BEO in the UK, but getting the ammo is a bitch as only one place imports it.
Reloading and casting my own bullet heads isn't really an option for me either.
>>
>>34051345
Masterkeys are cool and all but I'd rather use a gun I don't really care about if I end up needing it. I really don't ever want to need a gun, honestly, shit is scary, even if best case scenario ended up happening and an intruder was stopped without anyone (including him) getting hurt, the cops would still probably take my guns.

>>34051354
And with the right rifle you can hot-load 45-70 to a LOT more than the measly calibers you can cram into an AR.
>>
>>34051354
Is there a semi 45-70 somewhere out there that I'm not aware of? That'd be pretty cool.

The Rim diameter on the 45-70 is 1mm wider.

>>34051428

This is as close as I've seen to that concept:

Like .45-70 bullets or?

Idk much about reloading so I'm just guessing if it shares a OD with a popular cartridge, its easy to find sources for it.
>>
>>34047075

458 is for shooting wild hogs

plenty of power but not so much it goes for miles & miles & miles

>45-70

Yeah, if you think $1.25/round is dirt cheap. 50 BMG is only twice as much on the low end, so I guess it's not too expensive by that standard.

stopped making them in the 80s, which I guess makes sense given they were really expensive even back then

Supression capabilities. Its a giant .45 slugger and if its not subsonic already it no doubt has an effective subsonic military focused version

Notice how all these meme AR chamberings are coming directly to us after failing to get socom acceptance or otherwise military acceptance

~1' drop at 200 yards
Power is the .460 - .500 S&W range

Main draw for them is that their ten round mags are 30rd ar-15 mags with a different follower, and they are under .50 for places that ban that.

>>34053888
Last I looked they all had horrible drop rates. Like 8" at 100 yards or something ridiculous, can't recall.

Good slugs are pretty expensive.

Level flight? There's not a bullet that exists with the aerodynamic lift required to create a level flight.

Obviously OP doesn't shoot any rifle cals except surplus(if that) as almost all commercially loaded centerfire rifle rounds are $1+ a round. Probably still in middle school and/or noguns.
