>As of the fiscal year 2018 president’s budget request, there are no plans to retire either famed the A-10 Warthog or the venerable U-2 spy plane, Air Force officials said May 23.

>Budget overview documents show that the service intends to fully fund the entire fleet of 283 A-10s, while also “extend[ing] the service of the U-2.” The RQ-4 Global Hawk, the long-endurance unmanned aircraft planned to replace the U-2, will also continue undergoing sensor upgrades.

Keeping the A-10 and U-2 in stock while delaying the new systems is entirely a budget issue. That, and I expect some of the people voting for this have congressial districts where companies are still making a profit maintaining these systems.

Maintenance is the question though. I assume no new planes are being built on these platforms. And the platforms have been active for a long time. Look at the Navy, who have long been using their stock-in-service- as a parts supply. Planes who could be fixed are chopped down at a considerable speed. Of those 283 warthogs, how many are actually still flying and how many are parts lockers with wheels?
>>
>>34052333
The U-2 at least is an old Lockheed product, so there's still a new parts source if needed.

Fairchild-Republic doesn't exist anymore, the name is owned by Elbit Systems of Israel. They actually had to do a wing refit recently to the A-10 fleet so they wouldn't just fall out of the sky.
>>
>>34046109
this is why we can't have nice things

a10's are fucking cool but why wouldn't you want something faster that can drop more precise and a bigger variation of munitions? Someone needs to come up with a new vehicle they can put those cannons on so people don't feel like it's going to waste getting rid of the plane when they pull the gun off and stick it on something else.
>>
>>34054014

Any weapon system purchase is done according to three priorities.
1. is there money to put into the investment.
2. how much of the investment can be distributed to companies which will deliver the congress members election funds and an increase in the job statistics.
3. Is the system actually needed.

As for the A-10 cannons it is entirely possible the military will keep them in stock as stop gap systems. They might end up on 6x6 trucks and given to the next foreign militia the US decides to back, for instance. Say what you want about the armed forces but they have learned to improvise.

If the Air Force finally gets their way and replaces the A-10 with the shitty F-35, then American soldiers will pay for it in blood. President Trump should just transfer the A-10 and their pilots to the Army and Marine Corps. Simple. Problem solved. Then the Army and Marine Corp can join forces and develop the next generation replacement for the A-10.
>>
>>34054800
>Army and Marine Corps
or you could leave it to the branch who's job is actually flying, not infantry and expensive infantry
>>
>>34054836

The Air Force doesn't give a shit about the lives of soldiers or marines. Why should the Army and Marine Corps depend on the undependable?
>>
>>34046109
>>34054014
its called exacto, and its under development. Imagine the A-10s ammo container holds 1,350 rounds of target seeking projectiles.

Instead of nose down at a target, the A-10 flys over a crowd of hostiles, and goes "BRRRT" while flying straight. Suddenly a swarm of death rains down, and its accurate. Each target literally has a bullet with their name on it, and there is no current countermeasure for it.
>>

>>
As much as I love the A-10, it's a really old system. It'll only get more and more expensive to maintain something that is growing increasingly ineffective.
[BRRRRRRRRTs sadly]
>>
>>34050821
>The inherent problem with the A-10 is they are significantly more expensive to operate than a prop plane or drone while still being unviable in a non permissive airspace.

Except they can still operation in non-permissive airspace and do but ever since the Sniper Pod upgrade they no longer do low and slow missions and instead operate at med-high altitude as bomb/missile Taxi and CAS response/ready birds. The problem with this is that put simply, other assets are better and faster at this same mission. Replacing the A-10 with a piston or Turboprop aircraft does fuck all to fix this baseline issue.

2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XW2DwQun95s
2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoOaJclkSZg

It does not take a leap of faith to think that if a small .50cal can contain the sensors and guidance of the exacto package, than perhaps a 30mm could easily contain that and more. The biggest advantage is that the A-10 doesnt need to change its main weapon, or firing system. It would need either a companion craft, or series of sensors to designate targets, but beyond that life is good.

Fuck. Anon. any aircraft weapon will be deadly.
>>
>>34055895
With that then you don't need a high ROF gun, a simpler chain gun or revolver cannon could do the job.

Exacto wasn't for the GUA/A10 though I followed that for a few years and was really amazed they had a working prototype. I just don't see how the plane and weapon system combo is more cost or performance effective than whatever the airforce has been requesting.
>>
>>34046377
This
>>
>>34057394
>>34055931
the A-10 is already in existence. The GAU-8 system also already exists. Adjusting firing speed to a variable rate would be comparatively simple.

An EXACTO equipped warthog makes a lot of sense considering the platform, weapon, and ammunition exist, and the air force is stuck with the warthog, so they may as well put it to use.

Also consider that non guided, but "smart" munitions have been in use/ development as early as 2008.
https://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htweap/articles/20080316.aspx

I would be surprised if the main gun was not re purposed in someway, and considering the list of platforms using the 30×173mm it would not be unlikely.
>>
>>34057975

>>
>>34057975
Exacto isn't really that much of a game changer when APKWS is already in service and has better performance.
>take GAU-8 that people admire because it's cheap to operate considering its effects on soft targets
>subsitute accuracy by volume for accuracy by expensive purpose built 30mm smart rounds

You've destroyed the one advantage that the A-10 had for almost no gains in performance.
