Truck guns aren't a meme, they're pretty much a standard for everyone who likes trucks and guns.

They CAN be used for self-defense, but that's really not the primary purpose of the truck gun. The primary purpose of the truck gun is for coyotes, hogs, wolves, and the occasional deer.

It doesn't have to be a semi-auto, doesn't have to be some collapsible tacticool thing. All it has to be is rugged, realiable, centerfire, 3 MOA or better, in a cartridge suitable for 150 lb. animals. Personally, I think the SKS is the best overall choice, but that's just me.

Cincinnati here. Years back I was in the middle of downtown when a fucking riot blew up. It was insane how fast it happened. I was only 17 at the time, driving home from a night shift job. The road ways were blocked, a massive crowd of dindus swarmed the area. Stores were being busted into, shit lit on fire, etc.

I was forced to abandon my car when it came under attack by about 10 or so people. They smashed up my windows, head lights, etc. while I ran my ass off. Luckily the didn't chase me very far, and were more interested in destroying my stuff than destroying me.

I could very easily have been be they beat with the bricks and bats. I lived through it simply because they were feeling lazy about chasing me down.

Ever since then, I carry a shotgun behind the seat. You'd be surprised how fast shit like that can envelope and area, and then BAM you're stranded and without a long gun.

Part of the problem is that "truck guns" and "trunk guns" have become conflated.

I think of truck guns as animal/methhead defense for those in rural areas. Trunk guns are dumb unless you're an LEO.

Having a pistol easily accessible from the front seat isn't a bad idea (so long as it's out of sight), if you can't carry/can't easily access your CCW while sitting.

The shotgun/AR pistol behind the seat in case you have to bail out in a riot strikes me as excessive, unless you have to drive through LA/Detroit/Ferguson during a time of unrest.

I've started keeping a glock 19 in a sidepanel, and an iwb holster in the door pocket.

That way I don't have to fuck around with putting it on before I leave if I want to carry, and if I don't it's right there anyway for carjackers, dispatchings, whatever.

Windows are tinted so it shouldn't be seen unless you were breaking in anyway, which I get is an issue, but it's just a glawk so who cares.

I live in a rural area, drive into a mid-sized town daily for work. As part of my work, I have to enter areas where I am not allowed to bring my firearm.

Therein lies the problem. I don't want to be disarmed throughout the day just because I have a few stops for an hour at a time where I can't take my firearm. So it goes in my glove box. If some nignog breaks in, they'll get lucky and a stolen gun will be on the street. Apparently, under state law, that's less of an issue than allowing me, a background checked concealed carry permit holder, to possess my firearm in those "controlled" areas, so it isn't my "irresponsibility" at having a truck gun (which is what it is for part of the day), it's the State's calculation that it's acceptable to force me into that position.

I've heard that some areas require any government office or facility that restricts guns to have a lock box at the entry point specifically for that purpose. Seems like a good idea, and if they're really worried about theft of firearms out of vehicles, that's a valid solution.
