to starters a cheap AK is better than a cheap AR, both of them will have stoppages but the AK is easier to Un-jam and its simple enough for an amateur to field-strip

if you just want a range toy the AR is cheaper and more fun to make and personalize

Both are totally valid options to home defense

A high end Kalsh-like rifle is better but also more expensive than a High end Armalite
