Somewhere in-between. They're fantastic and all, but it's very hard to justify their price when SpiderCo and such are also on the market. Think of them kind of tacti-cool case knives. They're good, but you're mostly buying them for the name brand.

Arrived and helped butcher the 2nd of two cows yesterday with a fairly large group of people. Figured it's knife related enough.
>get there
>first thing I see is everyone bitching about knife sharpness and using some pull-through sharpener carbide/ceramic
>advise them to get rid of that thing because it destroys edges, not sharpen them, and get a cheap 1200grit ceramic rod, or literally anything else
>butcher for a bit and ignore complaints since nothing I can do
>hand out the spare work folders I had with in the car to people so they have something sharpened properly under the condition that it never touches that pull through thing
>after a short time, go get my sharpener because they're struggling
>swear I spent half of my few hours there fixing their destroyed knives that are pretty much only fit to spread butter over toast
>eventually gave up once they were "ok" because they were using chef knives etc to pound through bones etc in the past, so bent spots etc that I can't really sharpen properly and I didn't have my rod I should have probably had for knives that destroyed
As far as my knives went... As expected, the edges didn't hold up as well on the cheap pakistani steel folders bit did ok I guess. The puma is practically as perfect feeling as when I started though and just glided through all but the toughest stuff from start to finish.

I killed an injured bird once. On accident. Was going to hit it with a whiffle bat to end it's suffering. It kept flapping away 1ft at a time making me miss. Got frustrated and threw the whiffle bat. Clocked the bird right in the dome. Laughed hysterically and then buried it.

Picked up a couple more knives yesterday.

I'm flying out of town this weekend, and realized that I didn't have anything that I liked enough to carry but which was cheap enough to trust to baggage handlers and the TSA, so I went out and ended up picking up this Kershaw Emerson. It's actually a pretty nice little knife for the money, really solidly built with a good action and a decent grind and edge. I can't make the Wave opener work to save my life, though.

I've always wanted an Alox SAK and stumbled across this dark grey one while I was out, so I grabbed it too. Unlike the Kershaw this will actually become part of my EDC, replacing the Leatherman Micra that's currently on my keys. (It won't actually go on my keys, it'll just sit in the bottom of my pocket.)
>>
>>34045804
Top Kek. I had a buddy of mine to hold it.That dumb beaver looking mofo put the bird on a metal railing that looked like wood in the dark. I hit the railing and fuckin sparks fly out. And thats how i frigged the serrations unfortunatly.

Victorinox Ranger and some piece of shit Chinese knife I got a milsurp store
>>
So I'm new and totally gay about knives.

I'm looking for a folder AND a fixed blade.
>budget: around $100 USD per knife (pretty lenient figure; I am willing to go a little bit over budget if the knife is worth it)
>around 4" give-or-take, blade length for the folder
>*minimum* 4" blade length for the fixed blade
>bonus points for a e s t h e t i c s
>bonus points for sold at Cabela's
>no national allegiance, ie. don't care if it's made in USA/Canada/Japan/China/Italy/etc.
>>
>>34048534
If the folder has to be that long, the best thing I can think of is the Spyderco Endura.

If you're willing to drop down to around 3.5" there's a lot of stuff. Spyderco Manix 2 or Paramilitary 2, Benchmade Griptillian or Freek, maybe something Cold Steel.
>>
>>34048621
I'm lenient with the folder length.

But
>Cold Steel
Hell, I'm the fag here. I've been warned about this brand, but I'll try to keep an open mind.

>>
>>34049253
Hmmmm that's a tricky one.

The generic tacticool tanto is probably the MLP of knives since Japanese blades and ponies attract the same audience.

Bottle flipping = balisongs. That one's obvious.

Trap music knives would probably be the cheap Tac Force junk with DUDE WEED art on the blade and handle.

Minion knives are the CSGO stainless Chinese made crap. Both are tacky as fuck and were a cancerous fad at some point in time.

That's all I can really come up with. Also Microtechs are the hoverboards of the knife world because both are fucking expensive for what you get.

schrade has alright budget folders. if it's for xmas, if you keep an eye on rat 2s they could drop into your price range, but you have to watch out for fakes. ka-bar dozier can be had for 20 as well.

buck folders are ok and easy to find at brick and mortar stores.

sog if they are super into the mallninja look.

>>34048646
cold steel makes a lot of retarded shit, but they also are the only company i know of that makes large folders in your price range. the espada, voyager, and anything that comes in "xl" will be over 4" iirc. the full size recon is 4".

i've found their prices to be competitive, for the most part. anything attached to a name brand will carry a varying premium tho.

Benchmades look more traditional and thus, are more appealing aesthetically to people.

But spyderco knives have better quality and materials for cheaper. They just look weird and are pretty bare bones save for their more expensive models.

Though, Benchmade does have a pretty kickass guarantee from what I hear.

If you want it on your boot, use paracord to tie it on. You can make boot straps for your knife with enough paracord and some plastic buckles from a craft store to make it easier to pop on and off your boot.
>>34065262

Solid enough knife, BM doesn't really make bad knives. Kinda big and heavy and tantos aren't great for utility use, I might buy something for everyday tasks if you think you might need it.

>any suggestions on sheaths for boot mounting?
ESEE appears to make a boot clip for the ESEE 4, but if that doesn't work I'd look into getting something custom from a kydex maker.

Do you not get a survival vest or plate carrier or anything though? I'm assuming you're some kind of aircrew since you're wearing a flightsuit, and I thought you guys all had some kind of rig to mount it on.

>>34066042
Expensive materials, complicated machining and finishing, and lots of labor. I worked in a job for a while where I had to get products machined (automotive suspension components), and knives have seemed cheap ever since.
>>
>>34066818

we get a survival vest, but i'm not really sure where/if there's enough room to mount a knife. no plate carrier.

As to why I didn't take the pivot out before hand is because it kept fucking spinning. Actually it still keeps spinning with the flat head screwdriver because the screw is so tight

>jimping was a bit weird, and the coating was imperfect in the depth too

don't you mean CRKT? Cock Reeve is as far from quality as it gets. You can get Ti and S30V/S35VNfrom Spyderco's Taichung factory for a fraction of the price, and the Golden plant ain't half bad either.

And the type of steel isn't everything, as the south african douchebag so spectacularly demonstrated. I'd take Calton's 1095 over CRK s35vn any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Hell, i'd take LT Wright's O1 or D2 over CRK s35vn.

A Gun.
If you can't get a gun get pepper spray and some nice running shoes.
A knife would only be useful in situations where you can't run. Maybe you're backed into a corner or the dindu tackles you after you pepper spray him. Don't get some tacticool double edged chink dagger and pretend you're some SAS commando. A $10 Mora companion will take a scary sharp edge that will be really useful if someone's body is pushed up to yours and the handle is really ergonomic. I actually drilled a screw into the end of my moras handle so I can use the butt to strike. If you wan't a folder just get any decent 4 incher with a wave function.

i dont think you realize how small it is. it s a very small gentlemans knife.

if youre using this knife with tons of force then youre doing something wrong.

the objectiveness of it being bad or only there if youre trying to use this like a knife its not designed to be, aka your fault.

The ergos arent bad, not amazing but far from tragic.

Hand aint gonna slip cause well its a light use knife and if you use it lightly then that isnt happening.

liner doesnt dig into your hand cause guess what you dont use this knife with tons of force.

your spoioiuting shit without actually using or holding it. Its okay, you dont have to like the knife but chill homie

A lot of what you're paying for with Benchmade is the butterfly on the blade but that butterfly comes with some excellent customer service, which can be worthwhile. ESEE is similar, most of them come with a no-questions-asked warranty. I've seen people intentionally break their ESEEs and post about it on BF and the guy in charge of ESEE called them idiots and replaced their knives. I specifically remember that one of them was throwing a junglas into a car, which any manufacturer would consider gross abuse.

Just to be clear I don't know what BM's warranty includes other than sharpening services, what I outlined was specifically for ESEE. I've just seen a lot of people talking about how BM's taken care of them and you should make sure to get specific details if you ever consider sending it in.

United Cutlery makes a ripoff of Cold Steel's karambit that is probably the lowest I'd go. I'd go with Boker's karambit before that and then CS's AUS8 but after that you're generally looking at spending $100 or so for a decent karambit. Pinoy Steel makes classic stuff, Ontario makes one that's ridiculously sturdy, and Emerson & Fox are considered pretty nice.

I love both, for /out/ activities, the Bk7 is better in my opinion.

>Long / thick enough to baton wood.
>Still small enough to do finer work.
>Has great length for stabbing wood niggers.
>Easier to pull from sheath, specially if you got your pack on.
>Muh ounces.

Both are good choices, I usually rock a esee 4 with a small 19 inch hatchet.

Sorry for the slow response, been busy with work and a large batch of sharpening clients out of the blue.

Typically I follow a standard progression regardless of steel, but I change the starting point based on how much work needs to be done, and sometimes the steel.

My typical progression for a completely dull knife is 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1600, and 5/3.5 micron leather strop @ -.3ish degrees from the primary bevel. For my personal/family knives, I just microbevel from there instead of full sharpening, typically starting at 1000 and +.5 degrees.

If the edge needs significant work, I may start with 60/80 stones. But they leave a lot of scratches behind the the primary, so I have to also spend a decent amount of time on my 100/200 stones, sometimes at -.1ish degrees from super rough stones. Stuff like VG-10, s30v, ect... is okay with the 60/80s at medium/light pressure.

With these stones you have to be very careful with more chippy steels like you mentioned, ZPD-189, M4, s90v, CTS-204p VG-1, ect... So I'll still use them for major bevel resets, but I will not apex with them to avoid chipping at the apex.

I've played around with skipping grits before, but it depends on what you are trying to do. If you just want a functional edge, I'm fine with 100-600 grit to strop. But for full polishing, most of my work, I don't skip. I find to get out 400 grit scratches with a 800 stone, takes longer than just going through 600 in the first place. Especially on high carbide steels like M4.

Look closely at pic related. A VG-10 blade. The scratches you see in the polish, like caused by not spending enough time on 800 and 1000. It would be much more apparent on something like CTS-204p, M4, or ZPD-189.

Got a Kershaw Hotwire today. It's an ok knife for occasional use as a sort of gentleman's folder, but since it's in 3CR13MoV it needs to be sharpened fairly often. Good action due to it being SpeedSafe and it carries excellently to the point that I forget it's there most of the time. Good edge profile too.
>>
>>34100467
Cheers dude. I'm going to be dropping the money on a Wicked Edge after my birthday and this has helped me narrow down the stones/strops I need. I'm assuming that I'll need to get the 12 inch arms to sharpen my longer knives though.
>>
>>34101621
Honestly I've yet to upgrade to the 12" rods. I may soon, not too expensive. They look nice, but you can make do, I struggled, but was able to do some 9" bladed knives with the gen 1 arms, and with the Gen 2 ones I currently use, 9" blades are not really hard to do. Anything longer and you will want to just have more edge hanging out the other side anyways to compensate for some of the flex of the thinner tip. Pretty much anything up to 12", you should be good.

I think the Gen 3 jaw and the ball joint arms are the two most important improvements. And for that reason I really highly suggest starting with at lest the Pro-Pack 2, even though it comes with some unnecessary stuff like the granite base.

I nearly feel my WE set up is complete. Just need to get the longer arms, maybe play with some of the other strops/lapping film, and set up a Pelican case for everything. After that, I may invest in a Tormek T8 set up for faster cheaper volume sharpening.

I think for that money I'd rather get a nice manual folder. I can't carry autos in my area. As far as autos go, double action otf's are better than side-open single actions and any manual knife with an emerson wave will deploy faster than any auto. I played with a Zoom before, which is very similar to those you mentioned. The spring action is strong enough to pop it out of your hands, and disc locks in general are faulty in my opinion.

SOG makes some great $100+ manual folders and decent $100+ fixed blades. Everything else they make is more novelty than an actual tool/weapon. So NW Ranger, Tsunami, Pentagon, Spec Elite, Seal Pup, and any/all of their fixed blade bowies are great. But the folders you mentioned are kind of like the Trident and Flash designs. They're lightweight carry tools not designed to fill any hard cutting roles.

Some stuff with BM costs money to replace, but considering what they manufacture it seems they have the logistics to do repairs no matter how banal without it costing an arm and leg for the knife owner.

Then again I've been holding off on forever to get this missing spring pin replaced on my morpho so I can't yet vouch for how good they are on really dumb and banal parts replacement.

I think ultimately the Benchmade tax is for brand, material, and their customer support. As a total package that justifies coughing up for it at any price but the direct order manufacturer price which is just slightly beyond agreeable pricing.

Well SOG is your only option now. Honestly though though manual Axis/Arc are better and funner. Ganzo has some cheap Axis style knives that will probably be on par with SOG if not even more solid. SOG's budget FRN stuff is lightly built which is fine if you just want it for basic EDC use. I still suggest dropping a little more on a Benchmade like the Presidio. You have a lot of options if you're willing to spend 120$.

All those are great, but guess what, none of those are unique to that design. Countless other better designed knives have every single one of those points and more. The last one is subjective of course but if you think it looks good then great I guess. Botton line is, the knife is not very safe, has sub par ergonomics, is ugly (subjective), and overall is just a poor design.

Since March of this year. Not really a long time but it's a fairly new knife. I have a lot of knives that I rotate between so I'm not going to say I use it every single day but when I get a new knife I use it for about a week straight before it goes into my regular rotation. I can say that the construction is very solid, especially on the aluminum version I have and it has full steel liners so I wouldn't worry about durability.

Coconut oil my man. Just lock the blade and stab it into the solid oil, then melt it all over the steel with your fingers. It also makes the beech wood or whatever the handle is really nice looking.

>Both of these are subjective though.
Sure, in the same way that SJW's think gender is subjective

What if a substance gets on the handle that makes it harder to grip? What if you stab the knife into something unexpectedly tough? What if you hand slips? There is NOTHING stopping your hand from slipping up and getting cut on the blade, so this knife is objectively less safe than other designs.

I can forgive the above, if you're extra careful all the time, but the ergonomics is even more of a joke. There is a big metal edge digging into your fingers if you grip the knife with any serious force. That is a glaring flaw (im sure Spyderco markets it as feature so people with fat fingers can access the lock), and the awkward blocky handle only makes things worse... the overall design is objectively bad. You must be a fool if you think universal human ergonomics is subjective. I've handled the knife in real life btw.

It's just a poor design overall, objectively. But that's the beauty of knives isn't it? Because when you look at a knife you look at it holistically, and whether you like or dislike a knife on the whole is a very subjective thing. So what if this knife has a few subjective flaws? I didn't say it was a piece of shit... it is probably adequate for most people's uses. It's just flawed that's all, and that's okay. Not sure if you're the guy who originally posted it, but no need to get so butthurt. If you truly love the knife you will continue to love it despite its flaws.
