I'm from the US so we get options. If you're excluding AR's, my SHTF choices become:
Century Galil
Mossman 500
91/59
Kriss Vector
CZ 455

But those are just the guns I own, listed in the order I would choose. Other good choices would be old Marlin 336s, any .30cal bolt gun, milsurp of all kinds and a host of .22LR rifles and full sized handguns that could fit the bill.

If I want to buy another Vz.58 or other semi auto rifle, I have to fill a small paper work with police (+/-10 minutes), then go and buy it and then I'll finish another formality papers at the appropriate police dep. (+/- 20 minutes)

Why has nobody mentioned a .22?

.22 is the perfect survivalist rifle, you can take small game and even large game with proper shot placement. Ammo is plentiful and cheap, and the most common .22s have MASSIVE aftermarket variety.

Sure, get a .30cal rifle if you really want one to take durr or whatever with, but not having a .22 if S ever did HTF would be a terrible mistake.

Got a hard one for you guys, what about France ? Wich gun would you recommend ?

I think that semi-auto are out of question since the government would most likely take them back when SHTF.

From the point of law view, there is no difference between semiautomatic rifle and pistol. The only condition is concealed carry and only two firearms as CC.

12 gauge shotgun is probably the best overall choice if I don't know which exact country you live in. In countries without something similar to 2nd amendment a lot of gun owners are going to be hunters and the shotgun is maybe the most common hunting weapon. With hunting rifles there are so many different calibers that it's difficult to choose the most common caliber.
The shotgun is also pretty versatile with the different ammo you can get for it, and self defense situations happen within shotgun range.

For me, it's because I own an AR-15 and carry a .22 sidearm already. I can't see any merit in my owning a .22 rifle when I can get the same job done on small game (and people) with a handgun, and carry it around much more easily than a rifle. Furthermore, there are also plenty of animals you can't kill (((reliably))) with .22, such as bears.

The reasons are it's all around cheaper. I guess you could get a 100 dollar 22,what I paid for the pellet gun but what really sold me was the ammo. You can get 500 premium 22 pellets for 6 dollars and there is no supply shortage. Also the .22 makes very little noise compared to 22 long rifle.

In western europe as well. (belgian here)

We used to get Vz58s for 295 euros. I bought mine for 325 euros for a Vz58V, bayonet, sling, mag pouch & 4 mags. A lot of us bought them just to have hand out guns in case of SHTF. The downside is that 7.62x39 is not that common, so you need to stock your own ammo. But a few crates of surplus aint that expensive.

Personally though, my gun will be Sig 551 SB. I trust it with my life. Never had any type of failure throughout the time I've owned it.
It uses the same ammo as the military & police uses. And should be plentiful for a while at least.
