why cant they mount one of these on tank treads and just let it loose in the combat zone? program it to shoot any movement. could even make it a drone.

to be frank i cant think of a reason. just program it to shoot anything that moves and send it on its way.

It wouldn't be able to tell friend from foe or combatant from non-combatant.

Furthermore, do we have the moral fortitude and understand to accept the implications of giving a completely mechanized and independent machine the imperative and self-determination to kill?

It isn't that they "can't" it is that the prospect of putting a mobile self-directing death machine in a combat zone is a STUPID IDEA.
>>
>>34018779
I am genuinely curious how old you are and if you are employing the "modest proposal" argument.
>>
>>34018754
range too short it would only be good to engage incoming atg missiles and very low and close flying aircraft. the 20mm will not even be good against newer ifvs on the ground.

because it's not cost effective. the rounds are expensive, it's magazine doesn't hold enough rounds for continuous fire, and it requires quite a bit of maintenance after shooting.

plus it's radar based, not video based, so it can't fucking just shoot anything that moves.
>>
>>34019779

>>

>>

I unironically want one.
>>
>>34019625
>I would be interested in a scaled down model that maybe used

there's no point in scaling a CIWS down. it's that size to support the electronics for the gun and the radome/antenna. changing the caliber of the bullet wouldn't change the required size of the set up.
>>
>>34019834
>>34019625

20mm is used because you load it with MPT-SD and it self-destructs after a preset range.

Dump 500 rounds of .50 into the air and chances are someone's going to have a bad fucking day a couple of miles away.

C-RAM is 20mm and pretty much bigger than an Abrams with all its equipment. I am talking about something able to be completly mounted on say top of a Humvee, Abrams or Bradley, what ever.

I envision it being a semi-APS/CIWS capabilities in non-permisive environments. It doesn't need the massive radar a base/FOB C-RAM would require and can be a lot smaller package.

>time delay

> It doesn't need the massive radar a base/FOB C-RAM would require and can be a lot smaller package.

kay, so you're envisioning a giant target with a quarter of the ability of it's parent system that would likely require significantly more maintenance and likely wouldn't be effective against incoming threats in the area you're imagining.

hell it wouldn't even get the chance to shoot if the incoming track was launched from less than 200 yards away. or if it was shot in a high clutter environment.
>>
>>34020095
it runs on a radar system, how's waiting a second before blind firing at a moving track gonna help anything?

But I am being serious. The US government won't make the thing because they can't guarantee that it will do exactly what they want it to do when they expect it to do. Furthermore, the bad publicity and public ill will would be immeasurable.

Allies would break treaties. The world would re-shuffle around those who built and supported the thing and those who saw it as an abomination.

It would be a geo-political disaster and people would call for the head of the guys in charge.

Show me one good proof that image recognition systems that are rugged enough for combat and can serve as IFF where its 100% accurate, when the target is distant, in camo fatigues, and have low enough latency/think time to work in combat.

This isn't FSA/NSA facial recognition where civilians are either standing still or moving at slow speeds close to the camera.

It's non-existant technology

Only yesterday did I learn that the biggest airport in my country employs six men with shotguns to ride in a tractor trailer around the runways and surrounding fields to shoot birds twice a day and maintain a number of motion sensor-triggered air cannons used to scare off birds.
Fuckin full time employed with the full retard airport pay and benefits to shoot trap and wiping snow off motion sensors.

C-RAM is fine. It may not be Pantsir tier but it's good enough for a SPAAG. Honestly our biggest issue is we have nothing for medium ranged air defense, we have short range MANPAD, SAM and AAA, theater level long range Patriot, and Strategic level systems being deployed. Optimize CRAM for counter drone as well by giving it a higher altitude Missile to threaten UCAV- give it RAM for all I care

>>34031882
