As for your feed problem you might have gunk or debris in your chamber that the bullet is squeezing between it and the chamber walls, thoroughly clean your chamber and report back.

If it's quality ammo and the case length and overall length are in spec you may have a chamber that is cut too short.

It's unsafe because the fundamental concept behind all aspects of gun safety is that they become habits, as in literally automatic mechanical responses. You're right that the gun is empty, but the fact that you had to think about whether the gun is empty or not before deciding how to hold it is unsafe. Safe gun owners do not need to think about gun safety before they pick up a gun because their finger is ALWAYS off the trigger and the gun is ALWAYS pointed in a safe direction. There is no thought process there. If you have to think about it then there's a chance you'll forget to think, or you'll think and be wrong, and that's adding an additional and unnecessary step to safe gun handling. If you handle your gun different ways depending on its condition, inevitably you will be in a rush, and you won't have time to think it through and your mind will fall back on an automatic reflex, and one of those times it'll hit on the wrong reflex, and if you're lucky you'll live to regret it.
