Spend hundreds of millions or billions to build a flying vehicle with the most obvious weak point known to man. Hmm. Wonder why it isn't a thing

Well, except for physics.

There was once serious consideration of mounting two 105mm guns on a Chinook. but it was rejected because it would make the chinook too slow.

This. Current helicopters struggle with full sized auto-cannon rounds because of the heavy recoil.

Webm related, look at how the helo waddles back and forth after the burst and those cannons are mounted on the cheek, close to the center of mass and lift.

That's got a lot more to do with the fact that it's a silly bastard 30mm Gast gun with a ludicrous 3000rmp fire rate fabricobbled onto the side of the Hind, which was only ever meant as a bodge job Afghanistan upgrade. The Apache has no issues with the same caliber bushmaster gun because its has both a sensible fire rate and muzzle velocity, which won't beat the shit out of the airframe.

The ApacheĀ“s 30mm auto-cannon doesnt fire full length rounds. Its only 30x113 instead of 30x165 or 30x173.

>Its only 30x113 instead of 30x165 or 30x173.
Does the job though, it'll fuck you 180'
>>
>>34018931
My point exactly: Reduced muzzle velocity from smaller cartridge means less recoil. The Hind struggles only because the GSh-30-2k is an unsuitable weapon. Even through the Hughes 30mm (not Bushmaster, I was mistaken) on the Apache fires a shortened round, the Mi-28 has no problems with its full length 30mm, the same round used by Russian IFVs.

the canon on the havoc is so stupid
its only good for killing armor/light vehicles because it only carries 250 rounds

kill the vehicles with missles, have a cannon for mopping up infantry
>>
>>34020116
>kill the vehicles with missles, have a cannon for mopping up infantry

its actually the complete opposite lol
>>
>>34020355
But why is that? I guess it's because it uses ap ammo in a cannon caliber and hedp missiles or something similar, but why not do the opposite? Use a machine gun in .50BMG for killing personnel or appropriate light targets and use the saved payload for more AP missiles to take out harder targets.

Immediately what I thought of when I saw OP. GITS: SAC had some really great future army concepts.
>>
>>34017819
Why the fuck is the turret so big
>>
>>34024390
Probably because they wanted it to look like a giant hornet/wasp/hymenopteran.
>>
>>34019055
It's not just the muzzle velocity. The 30x113 is also fires a much lighter and weaker projectile. 30x113 HE projectile weights 270g, while 30x165/170/173 HE projectile weights 360-390g.

No it isn't, you shoot what you can at who you can. The 30mm is enough for Russian APCs and IFVs and the rockets do well to. In Afghanistan they use both but the 30mm is devastating.

>>
There is a reason.

The reason is that missiles >>> guns for kills per stowed mass.
>>
>>34024760
The 30mm is meh for COIN. The impact fuse needs something hard to detonate, like rock, or the side of a BMP. Versus sand it tends to bury itself before going off, so the lethality vs dismounts is poor compared to a 7.62 minigun - the 30mm needs a direct hit to kill well, but has less ammo for it than a 7.62 gun.

It gets the job done ofc. That's good enough.

Laser guided 70mm otoh is the greatest anti-insurgent weapon ever made. Big enough to guarantee kills in the open, on trucks or vs a room, small enough it won't wreck the house next door, and cheap+accurate so there's never fear of running out of shots.

If you remove the propeller, pretty much everything above the main compartment becomes unneeded, which sort of destroys the hind look.
