What's the best jet fighter that is no longer in Service anywhere in the world?

The later versions of the EE Lightning and the Super Sabre seem to be about as modern as I can find from the west.

Everything from the 60 appears to still be in service somewhere.

From the east there is the Su-15 which is breddy gud

F117 with some kind of bodge job A2A loadout?

Assuming that prototypes don't count, only fleet service, I'd vote for the F-8 Crusader. Good performance, good armament, good service record.

Q: When does a Lightning go fuel critical?
A: As soon as the engines are turned on.

>Thanks for the thread OP, I was beginning to forget stuff.

You're welcome, its quite tricky. If you want to go full autism then try and arm it with retired weapons.

Kinematically speaking i dont think anything retired beats the Lightning, Duel ADEN cannons are still a potent weapon today and Red Top was al all aspect IR missile making it superior to most of it's counterparts.

I think Mirage 3s with DEFAs and Shafrir 3's will have your ass.
Also, the Viggen had a 30mm Oerlikon KCA, and 6 hardpoints for AMRAAMs and late sidewinders.
So your ass is had, thanks to the eternal Swede retiring a perfectly good plane.

The Su-15 is Sanic fast, but not maneuverable enough to shoot down an Ikea fighter, particularly at low altitude, where it lacks LD/SD.
Also, its missiles a shit compared to AMRAAMs for fighter-sized targets.

Tornado F3

Retired by the RAF in 2006 (the less well equipped ADV has also been retired by other nations).

F3 was not just a Tornado with a different mission, it had various structural changes.

The 27mm Mauser is still in service but the Skyflash missile is probably the best BVR missile that is not in service.
>>
>>34007123
Sparrows, Skyflash AKA RAF Sparrow, Lima Sidewinders (I think Mikes are in active service), and I'm pretty sure that the AIM-120A AMRAAM is out of service so it's fair game.
>>
>>34007156
Skyflash is semiactive as opposed to AIM-120A AMRAAM ( which I belive has been entirely superseded by the C and D models), but if OP rules the airframe kosher I believe you won.

Well just looking at its contemporaries within the Century Series, just about everything else was better than it, although usually they were more specialized for certain roles. The F-105 was a far better strike platform, the F-101 was a better long-ranged interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft, and the F-106 (and arguably even the F-102) was a better fighter.

Hell, even the Starfighter, with its shit reputation, was arguably a far better fighter all-around than the F-100.

Yes, but so was literally everything else we used. The F-100 was pretty unspectacular all around, and it had plenty of flaws in the design. It's pretty much the American analog to the MiG-19 - a flawed first-generation supersonic fighter.

fwiw The Navy was going to use it as a missile truck, but it just couldn't work on a carrier.

In all it would still be good as an interceptor, with its long range, high speed, room for a big powerful radar, an good payload.

The general design of the F-111B inspired the F-14 and the radar and AIM-54 designed for the F-111 also carried over onto the Tomcat.
So there's also that. As well as being a good aircraft in its own right the Aardvark also helped one of the best naval fighter designs ever become a thing.

Tornado ADV, if that counts (Of course Strike Fighter and Recon Tornados are still in service)

Sea Harrier, or British Harrier II (If that counts, American built harriers are still in service)

All of those can mount AMRAAMs, are would be able to hold their own against other 4th gen fighters.

If you don't count those you'd be forced to go to really old shit like the EE lightning or the Delta Dart.

There aren't a lot of fighters modern enough to mount BVR missiles that are no longer in service.

On a similar note, what rifle/MG/SMG/pistol would /k/ equip a small army with, if the same restrictions are imposed?

Obviously has to be ex-military, no civilian market firearms.

Arguably true given that we only wound up building a small number of F-22s and then shut down the production lines.

If we were going to do that, we should have just gone with the 23 instead. Superior aircraft in almost every sense, just more expensive.
