Texans declare independence. Mexicans siege a Texan held mission known as the Alamo, where 185 Texan men hold off 1,800 Mexican troops for 13 days. Legendary American heroes Davy Crocket and James Bowie both died defending the Alamo with their brothers in arms, and although the entire garrison was killed, they took 600 Mexican soldiers down with them, while inspiring the rest of the Texan army to avenge their deaths with cries of "Remember the Alamo!" in the Battle of San Jacinto, where the Texans won the battle and the war, thus giving Texas independence from Mexico.

I don't live in the hood.
An embassy is an embassy; it's there for diplomatic reasons, and there is literally no reason to ever attack one.
Attacking one is usually considered a declaration of war.
Defending one in order to evacuate other personnel is a perfectly legitimate reason to go and fight to defend one.

Others report low mexican numbers.

It was actually 100k mexican troops who had never been defeated, against 300 volunteer first Texans, and they held off the entire mexican army in a zerg style rush until they ran out of ammo and their knives we worn down to the size of tooth picks. Only then did god reach down with his own and brought up the first Texans to heaven.

In the end 300 Texans were soared death and given a free ride to heaven by god himself, and 99k mexicans died.

Again it was only because they ran out of bullets

To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World:

Fellow citizens & compatriots—I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna—I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man. The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken—I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch—The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country—Victory or Death.

William Barret Travis

are there any other cases of destroyers taking on and damaging heavy cruisers like at Samar?

the only other example I can think of is HMS Glowworm

>get lost from your escort group in fog and heavy seas
>see two german destroyers and open fire on them
>suddenly the fucking Admiral Hipper looms out of the fog 10,000 yards away
>rather than retreat with little hope of surviving you decide to inflict as much damage as possible to the enemy
>lay smoke and turn towards her at flank speed
>weather a storm of 8 and 4 inch shells as you rapidly close to within 800 yards of the Hipper
>the ship is in flames, your fore gun is destroyed and the bridge is shot away by an 8 inch shell killing everyone but the Captain and 1 other officer
>the ship's klaxon is damaged and left constantly wailing
>launch a full spread of torpedoes which narrowly miss
>the captain orders a final hard turn to starboard to ram the Hipper
>the Glowworm puts a 40 foot hole in Hipper's bow and crumples herself like a tin can
>not long after ramming the burning Glowworm sinks after 3 8-inch hits in quick succession and a boiler explosion kill 80% of her crew

the Captain got the first Victoria Cross of the war and HMS Renown(the ship Glowworm was escorting) fought off both Scharnhorst and Gneisenau less than a day later

>Messy political situation in Mexico; corruption, factions, you name it, mostly (as now) taking place in Mexico City itself
>Santa Anna maneuvers his way into power, declares himself de facto dictator, shreds the Mexican Constitution
>Half of Mexico (basically, everybody north of Mexico City and its surroundings) forms councils and other bodies and starts talking secession
>Mexico City holds a huge chunk of the population and wealth of the country; Santa Anna forms a huge army from that and marches north
>Santa Anna kills everybody. Nobody can even slow him down
>Texas is at the far north end of Mexico (except for unsettled lands in the Rockies); it has the most time to organize its tiny population, actually declare independence, and try to raise armies and fortify towns
>Santa Anna arrives in San Antonio with most of his troops (others were dispatched to places like Goliad), lays siege for 13 days before launching waves of pre-dawn attacks
>The third wave gets through the flimsiest part of the wall, the Texians are wiped out
>Santa Anna pursues the last and largest opposing force left in all of Mexico almost all the way to the US border
>SIESTA!
>Angry Texians charge his sleeping troops, catch them by surprise, kill or capture them
>Maybe if I wear a corporal's uniform they won't recognize me...
>(Mexican troops): "GENERAL! IT'S YOU"
>Forced to sign treaty recognizing Texas independence
>Get deposed back home in Mexico City (for now; he became dictator like 3-4 times in his life, which exemplifies most of what's wrong with Mexico)

rgeant Roy P. BENAVIDEZ

>On the morning of 2 May 1968, a 12-man Special Forces Reconnaissance Team was inserted by helicopters in a dense jungle area west of Loc Ninh, Vietnam to gather intelligence information about confirmed large-scale enemy activity.

>This area was controlled and routinely patrolled by the North Vietnamese Army.

> After a short period of time on the ground, the team met heavy enemy resistance, and requested emergency extraction.

> Three helicopters attempted extraction, but were unable to land due to intense enemy small arms and anti-aircraft fire.

>Sergeant BENAVIDEZ was at the Forward Operating Base in Loc Ninh monitoring the operation by radio when these helicopters returned to off-load wounded crew members and to assess aircraft damage.

> Sergeant Benavidez voluntarily boarded a returning aircraft to assist in another extraction attempt.

> Realizing that all the team members were either dead or wounded and unable to move to the pickup zone, he directed the aircraft to a nearby clearing where he jumped from the hovering helicopter, and ran approximately 75 meters under withering small arms fire to the crippled team.

>Prior to even reaching the team's position he was wounded in his right leg, face, and head.

> Despite these painful injuries, he took charge, repositioning the team members and directing their fire to facilitate the landing of an extraction aircraft, and the loading of wounded and dead team members.

> He then threw smoke canisters to direct the aircraft to the team's position.

> Despite his severe wounds and under intense enemy fire, he carried and dragged half of the wounded team members to the awaiting aircraft.

> He then provided protective fire by running alongside the aircraft as it moved to pick up the remaining team members.

> As the enemy's fire intensified, he hurried to recover the body and classified documents on the dead team leader.
>>
>>34012749
(((Comrade))), the Soviets only won because the Vishna broke the binding blood contract with the FĂ¼hrer for military assistance and the guaranteed beginning of Ragnarök. This betrayal lead to Soviet Jews altering true history and FĂ¼hrer Hitler faking his death and leaving for the last true Aryan paradise on Earth, Argentina.
>>
>When he reached the leader's body, Sergeant Benavidez was severely wounded by small arms fire in the abdomen and grenade fragments in his back.

> At nearly the same moment, the aircraft pilot was fatally wounded, and his helicopter crashed.

>Although in extremely critical condition due to his multiple gunshot and shrapnel wounds, Sergeant Benavidez secured the classified documents and made his way back to the flaming wreckage, where he aided the wounded out of the overturned aircraft, and gathered the survivors into a defensive perimeter.

> Under increasing enemy automatic weapons and grenade fire, he moved around the perimeter distributing water and ammunition to his weary men, reinstilling in them a will to live and fight.

>Facing a buildup of enemy opposition with a beleaguered team, Sergeant BENAVIDEZ mustered his strength, began calling in danger close air strikes and directed the fire from supporting gunships to suppress the enemy's fire and so permit another extraction attempt.

>He was wounded again in his thigh by small arms fire while administering first aid to a wounded team member just before another extraction helicopter was able to land.

> His indomitable spirit kept him going as he began to ferry his comrades to the craft.

> On his second trip with the wounded, he was clubbed from behind by an enemy soldier. His jaw and skull were shattered.

> In the ensuing hand-to-hand combat, he sustained additional bayonet wounds to his head, face, and arms before killing his adversary
>>
> He then continued under devastating fire to carry the wounded to the helicopter. It was later found out that in the confusion he loaded two enemy bodies into the helicopter because "I couldn't see a damn thing, I was bleeding from my eyes, and I wanted to make damn sure I didn't leave anyone behind"

>Upon reaching the aircraft, he spotted and killed two enemy soldiers who were rushing the craft from an angle that prevented the aircraft door gunner from firing upon them.

>With little strength remaining, he made one last trip to the perimeter to ensure that all classified material had been collected or destroyed, and to bring in the remaining wounded.

>Only then, in extremely serious condition from numerous wounds and loss of blood, did he allow himself to be pulled into the extraction aircraft.

>Sergeant BENAVIDEZS' gallant choice to join voluntarily his comrades who were in critical straits, to expose himself constantly to withering enemy fire, and his refusal to be stopped despite numerous severe wounds, saved the lives of at least eight men.

>He was evacuated to the base camp, examined, and thought to be dead. As he was placed in a body bag among the other dead in body bags, he was suddenly recognized by a friend who called for help. A doctor came and examined him and he too believed Benavidez was dead. The doctor was about to zipper up the bag when Benavidez managed to spit in his face, alerting the doctor that he was still alive. Benavidez had a total of 37 separate bullet, bayonet, and shrapnel wounds from the six hour fight with the enemy battalion
>>
____________________________________

>Prior to his attachment to the 5th SFG

>He stepped on a land mine during a patrol and was evacuated to the United States, where doctors at Fort Sam Houston concluded he would never walk again and began preparing his medical discharge papers.

>As Benavidez noted in his 1981 MOH acceptance speech, stung by the diagnosis, as well as flag burnings and media criticism of the US military presence in Vietnam he saw on TV, he began an unsanctioned nightly training ritual in an attempt to redevelop his ability to walk.

>Getting out of bed at night (against doctors orders), Benavidez would crawl using his elbows and chin to a wall near his bedside and (with the encouragement of his fellow patients, many of whom were permanently paralyzed and/or missing limbs), he would prop himself against the wall and attempt to lift himself unaided, starting by wiggling his toes, then his feet, and then eventually (after several months of excruciating practice that by his own admission often left him in tears) pushing himself up the wall with his ankles and legs.

>After over a year of hospitalization, Benavidez walked out of the hospital in July 1966, with his wife at his side, determined to return to combat in Vietnam.

>Benavidez returned to Fort Bragg and began training for the elite Army Special Forces.

>Once qualified and accepted, he became a member of the 5th Special Forces Group; and the Studies and Observations Group (SOG).

>Despite continuing pain from his wounds, he returned to South Vietnam in January 1968.

But basically it was a hill defense, I think the Ottomans were defending. There was a large ammunition dump on the hill. The hill was about to get overunn, when the commnader ignited the gunpowder cache, causing a massive explosion killing every on on top of the hill and most of the attackers.

The entire thing is just crazy.
>Byzantines try to mount cannon on their walls
>This actually damages their walls
>No stones to repair wall damage so use wood and dirt
>Actually works better against Ottoman cannons
>Ottomans build a giant siege tower
>Byzantines burn it down
>Ottomans try to tunnel in
>There just happens to be one guy in Constantinople who knows how to do counter-sapping work
>Oh and somehow he's Scottish, because why the fuck not
>Can't attack city from one side because there's an Italian city in the way.
>Ottomans invent the world's first mortar so they can shoot over the Italians and into Constantinople
>Entire Ottoman navy spends the afternoon attacking 3 becalmed Italian boats
>Decisive Italian Naval Victory
>Mehmet II is so angry he charges into the surf, drags his Admiral out of a boat, and beats the man's eye out
>Ottoman navy can't get into the Golden Horn because Turks can't into naval battle
>One night, they take half their navy, pick it up, and carry it over land, around the Italian city, to the other end of the Golden Horn
>Finally break through into Constantinople
>It's so depopulated that the Ottomans have to establish separate peace arrangements with isolated towns inside it
>It's so poor that the three days of plundering is ended after two because they're all out of things to plunder
>And most of the second day was just making sure of that
1453 was a shitshow.

The Lone KV-2 at the Battle of Raseiniai
>KV-2 waits at a crossroads, holding off the 6th panzer division, trying to head back to their headquarters to the west
>opens fire on the convoy, forcing them to turn around
>50mm anti-tank guns were set up, and fired on the tank. but it remained.
>the KV fired on the battery of 50mm guns soon after, destroying them
>then they brought out a 105mm howitzer to try and destroy it
>but couldn't get within a safe distance to get an accurate shot
>they tried to position an 88mm anti-aircraft gun around 700 meters away, but the crew spotted it and destroyed that as well
>at night German soldiers tried to take it out with explosives, but were met with machine gun fire
>they distracted the crew with panzers, then attacked with anti-aircraft shells
>after the attack, German troops snuck up to the tank, whose armor was full of holes from the large shells
>to their surprise, the turret began to move
>one soldier ran up, dropped a grenade in the tank, killing the 6 crew members
>the Germans buried the crewmembers nearby out for respect for such a great foe
tl;dr "Fury" but with probably drunk Russians instead of Americans

That bit isn't in the wiki. It also makes no sense unless they were somehow too retarded to use indirect fire.

Italian city was Galata which was a Genoese colony from the 13th to 15th centuries.

The Italian ships are mentioned in passing in the Wikipedia article but you'll have to do more research into the siege or Admiral Baltoghlu.

There was a doctor by the name of Niccolo Barbaro in the city at the time of the siege who wrote a first hand account of it that's generally pretty easy to find.
