I'm 32 and considering enlisting in the Army. I know I know. After getting my college degree and trying to work with that, I found I am not passionate about it any longer. I always wanted to serve deep down and now I want to take advantage before I'm too old and regret not doing it.

I talked to a recruiter and they gave me a run down of MOS with enlistment bonuses. These are the ones I'm interested in. Any advice? Also, looking to pick something that would help with with a civilian job in the future.

not him, but got a similar score, and Dad was a DI among other things in the corps, he casts a big shadow. Navy and Marine recruiter wanted me to do nuclear engineering and some other pog thing that would pay well after I'm out. Have that itch to enlist but it's only because I have no idea where the fuck my life is headed and I've always wanted to be an operator and have that skillset. I'm addicted to high adventure shit like cavediving and mountain climbing so the only thing I'd be interested in is MARSOC or even breaking family tradition to try SEALs. Was planning on going to school in the fall to get my high purity welding certs and construction trades diploma but I'm tired of that work. I'm 24, wut do? I listened to the vast majority of vets I met telling me not to join up but I'm already regretting not joining up earlier.

>>
>>34007837
Get your diplomas. Join up. Do what you want. Thing about military in general? Your results may vary. I've met people who were super excited to join up, but left after their contract expired because they didn't like it... as I've met people who only joined up out of some sort of necessity, and ended up re-enlisting time and again.

You won't know if YOU like it until YOU try. If you have the itch, scratch it before you're too old. Because the faggots that don't join up and wish they would've? Those are the worst, by far.
>>
>>34008092
I've heard that it's extremely different compared to the other branches in overall "feel".

Much more relaxed, although not nearly as flexible as other branches.

>>
>>34008696
Fuck no. They aren't hurting for numbers like the Army.
>>
>>34008696

Only for critically manned jobs. If you're interested in intelligence, languages, or SOF then yep, bonuses are on the table. Otherwise lolno, they aren't the Army.
>>
>>34009308
I'm interested in intel, currently looking at SIGINT for the Army with a 15k bonus. What would I get in the USAF?
>>
>>34009331

Last I checked only PJ is matching 15k. Something between 8-11k for something like 1N3X or 1A8X last I checked.
>>
>>34009340
The exact dollar amount is really important. I have a bachelor's and even though I would be an E-4 in the Army and E-3 in the USAF I've heard the quality of life in the Air force would be better I would be able to get BAH sooner than the Army.
>>
>>34009355
If you have a bachelors why not go for Officer and make more?
>>
>>34009355
I mean to say isn't important*
>>
>>34009355

If a few thousand dollars is enough to convince you to enlist in one branch over another, particularly to enlist instead of commission, then I don't really know that the USAF is for you. Delayed gratification man...

>>34009368

Oh. Yeah, there is a bonus, just not as big. The USAF doesn't need you that badly.
>>
>>34009367
I currently despise my job and not sure I can put up with it for another year or two to wait for OCS/OTS boards that I may not even be selected for.
>>
>>34009331

The USAF doesn't generally have much for signing bonuses. They've got more people wanting in than they can take and can be picky without incentives like that.

Is it a good idea to put on a bit of extra flab before going to basic?

>>
How hard is to get your desired job in the Navy? I know it partially depends on your asvab scores but do i get to hand-pick my job based
as long as it matches my score or will they just give me options based on aviability/needs of the navy?

Also, i want to join as a Navy EOD. My recruiter keeps telling me that if i want to go with jobs such as SEALS or EOD i should rather chose another job and later try to reclass... is this really a reliable option?

>>
>>34010219
you should be able to do Dive Mo program prior to boot while in DEP to prepare you/screen you for Navy SpecWar (EOD). Do NOT go undesignated or another rate and then "try" to convert to SpecWar, they won't let you as much as they say they will.
>>
>>34010096

No. They don't starve you in basic. Lots of people gain weight if they show up as skellies.
>>
>>34010219

Your chances of being able to reclass later are about the same as you being able to make EOD. That is to say, very, very slim.

>>34010490

Thanks for the insight; i knew he wasn't being straight.

I know Navy EOD is tough, but i want to at least get the chance to try. I need a challenging job, something that would make me proud to pull off, which is why most jobs (even in civilian life) make me feel a void inside, they are always too easy. If i fail, then it wasn't meant for me; but it will not be for the lack of trying, i will give my fucking best.

Again, thanks for the insight guys.

Pretty good gig if you want some minor education bennies or after you're done with active duty and want to do it for clearance/healthcare reasons. It's also god tier if you're a federal employee.

It's not a real job though, and it isn't easy to go active if you want to. Don't join the guard if those are your goals.

>>
>>34010692
I'm 31 and due to varying factors i wasted my life up to this point and i'd very much like to fix what i can. I also worry about the current political climate and i'd like to get some military training so i can protect myself and others should shit ever hit the fan.

Goals:
Get good at tactics and strategy
Get good at shooting
Get military fit
Have income while doing so (mom is very old and needs help)
Am old and completely out of shape. I'd need years to get fit enough for basic army on my own, i think. But i'd rather go navy if i went full service because my dad was navy.

What should an old man do?

The big thing is to look it up, know the schools, and present that to the MEPS guy/recruiter. Pretty much you'll have to be put in touch with a Dive Mo rep who then gives you yay or nay and not the normal MEPS route.

Then when you get to boot, for the love of god get the SpecWar division and not a normal division. It really does make a hell of a difference in being able to upkeep your fitness the first couple weeks instead of just getting sick and wasting away before the preliminary test.

Anon, just get into shape on the treadmill. it will be your best friend. Specifically, modern treadmills have pace settings ranging from 0.5 mph and usually cap out at around ~12 mph.

the official us military website has a good potato-tier workout regimen for fat ass fatasses that will allow even the most absolutey out-of-shape Tumblrina hambeasts make it past AF/Navy basic in 3 months by abusing the treadmill

After a warmup, it has you running at an incredibly slow pace designed specifically to keep you running. You must not stop running at any point during your runs, trained or otherwise, as it will immediately disqualify you.

The whole run needs to be a *minimum* 1.5 miles, which is the ENTRANCE requirement for every single branch of the military. To graduate basic in the army and muhreenz, you will need to run 2 and 3 miles, respectively.

ideally, regardless of the distance you'll want to train to hit a minimum of at least 8:00/mile, or about 7.5 mph.

As long as you have no actual medical issues and you're wearing running shoes, you are more than capable of making it.

It's the best of the branches, the most career driven, and the one that actively wants to retain you, because the time/money invested into training you for their fairly small operations means you're worth keeping. Let's you straight up choose your A-School, gets to do some dope shit.

On the other hand, you could get put on an icebreaker in Alaska and just fucking suffer.
>>
>>34006783
For initial enlistment, yes you fucked your odds of an SC. But, the good news is if you enlist and keep your nose clean, they'll clear you.

That essentially rules 35 series out for you altogether.

I would, if I were you, look at MOS that offer the best career path when you get out. Reason being is, due to your age you're not likely to stay in for a full 20.

Do you have a 2yr or 4yr degree? How many credits total if not a 4?

still, pulling 5-6 years in the marines as a uav pilot and then flying for the contractors would be a fucking nice gig; if it's still possible to get uav pilot that is. the uav guys i worked with had only been working contract stuff for like a year. they got picked up by a recruiter while they were in school using their gi bill. 1 guy even dropped his semester so he could go fly in iraq to make 6 figures. shit is ridiculous.

>>
>>34013553
Its very rare and you'd be making a gamble.

At best, you get a stateside "deployment" or maybe even lucky enough to land a deployment over seas.

But in reality you will be stuck with a super specific MOS that doesn't translate over to the civilian world and you won't have any relevant skills or experience.
>>
>>34013531
most generals have been in for at least 20 years. it's kinda the requirement to be in at least 20 to make your second star. and considering at 20 years you get half pay, full medical, and full benefits, you tend to sit pretty on a pension. half base pay for a full bird is like 50k. you don't really need to work at that point.

I was in your shoes a few years ago, but I started college with afrotc. When my 21 credit semesters in sophomore computer engineering had a sub 3.0, they said get your grades back up and you're fine, then they kicked me out a week before finals. My scholarship turned into a loan, I was honorably discharged from the faggot club and it all left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I took some time off from school because I realized programming makes me depressed and got my pilots license, got a part time job at with united airlines at the same time because planes are cool. Now I reaccommodate overbooked passengers by force and travel the world to visit war museums and drink beer.
My advice is to realize that you will be in the real world at some point, so be sure to use the military as a stepping stone and learn skills for your future.

2 star retirement usually imparts a passive six figure salary for life. You can either golf for the rest of your years or consult with a firm in the defense industry. A retired 2 star is pretty much an automatic hire for >200k in the DC area.

I thought I wanted to go to SE asia and help teach english as a second language but I realised while I was in school I wanted more.I'm going to start by going to the Defense Language Institute (I hope to get an intelligence job (then cross train small arms or medical Pic Related). I'm exited to become the best soldier I can be but I'm looking on forums/watching youtube videos and its disheartening to see all these lazy halfassers I'm going to be serving with. I just want to surround myself with moto people. make that a priority when you are at reception. the last thing you want is not getting your ranks when going through your basic issue. if it gets fucked up you might have to wait until you get out of training to get your paperwork straight.

they'll give you your backpay when everything gets settled. but don't let that shit stew until you get to your unit. the last thing your new team leader or sponsor wants to deal with is having to take you to finance every other day. make sure all of your paperwork is in at least triplets too. some people run out of copies for things.

>tfw 1% body fat over the limit
Technically I'm right on the line, but my recruiter doesn't want to risk it.
>>
hey guys my friends and i are preparing to join the marines, we already have our own uniforms, anything else we should get before joining up? =)

>tfw wanted to join the military but parents dead set against the enlistment and wanted me to finish college first
>tfw by the time I was getting done with college the war in Afghanistan was drawing down
>tfw when squid family member who did some spooky stuff discourages me from enlisting due to the way the military is going
>decide to serve as a paramedic rather than spend four years either yelling at enlisted or getting yelled at by Butterbars in peacetime militany
>tfw now 25, might be too old to enlist and not sure of where I'd end up (want to be hospitalast corpsman but no guarantee) but also no experience with which to volunteer over seas as contractor or kurdish propaganda price that gets to shoot at goat fuckers.

Feels bad man. Is there really no hope for me?

So much this. If you like guns, don't fucking join a "combat" job. Conventional military hardly ever gets to shoot.

Get a comfortable office job with good pay and then spend the extra money/time you have on shooting funs.
>>
>>34024132
you can still join dum dum

You're a fucking retard if you think that a general officer does not have an insane professional network (more important for hiring than a resume in all fairness) and is not GUARANFUCKINGTEED a lucrative job in government/lobbying/defense contracting.
>>
>>34024148
Is there something about this picture that I'm missing?
>>

You're retarded dude.
>>
>>34024801
those fags are not really marines, just airshit posers with real uniforms.
>>
>>34017971
You will most certainly be a beat cop as a rookie officer. They won't care if you were an O-3. Pretty much everybody in law enforcement is a veteran if they were hired in the last 10 years due to vet preference and the over saturation of veterans in the job market.

To be hired into a department as a Sergeant directly is going to require years on the job, no matter where you look to get hired.

>>34017884
There is a program to go into 31D as Army enlisted if you have over a 3.0 GPA with that degree. If you are serious about a LEO career that's a better option than OCS.

Yes, because the Air Force is the only branch that enforces gender pronouns.

>If you chose well in women, it won't be an issue. Just keep up a strong rapport with her.

Being in the military is the most cuckold prone profession there is. Thinking she isn't going to cheat because you "kept up a rapport" or are even an officer is completely retarded.
>>
>>34026370

>>

yes. you have to be the armorer which is a pretty shit job, but that school will give you a damn good job in any store that sells firearms. and if you're planning on staying in, i think it gives you promo points.

Why are recruiters so fucking useless?
>>
>>34027499
they've got a shitty job that they got because they came down on orders. they have to deal with sniveling little shits all day that have an asvab of 50 that want to do special forces black ops call of duty style. give them some credit dude. the only thing you are to them is another number for the recruitment line.
>>
>try to join Marines out of High School
>doing well, pass physicals at MEPS
>at the end where they ask you if you failed to tell them something, I got scared
>no one told me to keep my mouth shut
>tell them about ADHD meds I used to take in high school
>immediately taken back and DQ'd
>Marines say they can't get me a waiver
>Try Navy, can't get me a waiver
>Try Army, the recruiters just drop contact with me after a while for some reason
>Discouraged, give up for a few years
>Working shit jobs and living on community college money
>Recently start talking to a National Guard recruiter
>keeps telling me it won't be a problem to get me in
>gets me hyped up, finally going to get into the military
>get a shitton of documents sent to MEPS
>been messaging him once a week for over a month now asking "Any updates?", nothing
>starting to get discouraged again

I am so fucking sick of being dragged through the mud over some stupid fucking meds I took in high school that I didn't need, because the shit was overdiagnosed. I am fit and mentally sharp, and willing to serve my damn country. This is fucking ridiculous.

I am on the verge of getting my passport and flying to France to join the Legion.
>>
>>34027818

Well, if dealing with bureaucratic red tape is this disheartening for you, then you might not even want to join the military period.
>>
>>34027818
if you can get a doctor to sign off on not having adhd now you should be in the clear. you got dq'd probably because they thought you were lying to them. it'll be hard to get back into the recruiting process, but it is possible. go talk to the recruiter face to face and ask him what the hold up is.
>>
>>34027762
Recruiters are often sniveling shits themselves. Lots volunteered for that duty due to
1. Being shitbags
2. Wanting to fuck some underage chicks
3. Wanting to sit on their ass and do nothing away from command's eyes.

Recruiters are like anyone who volunteers for honor guard, strictly shitbag duty to help improve your image after you fucked up so hard that your former commands know you by name/face.
>>
>>34027845
Trust me, I've been considering giving up on the whole soldiering thing for a while. But I'm going to try just a little bit more.

>>34027880
I did have a doctor sign off on it. The doctor who diagnosed me with it originally gave me a letter stating I no longer needed it. Along with 40 pages of medical documentation that the clinic sent to my recruiter to send over to MEPS. I have no idea what is taking so long.

>>
>>34028885
Since it's a victimless misdemeanor, most likely not simply because it's illegal, however, it does show that you're romantically/sexually vulnerable, and thus suspectible to feminine exploitation

for secret clearance you'll be fine, but for top secret? couldn't tell you myself

>>

Depends on what you mean, I'm currently in my training school and most of the LPO's and Chiefs are pretty chill. Even the Officers on base don't really give a shit. Basic however is pretty standard military shit you'd expect.

please help, i leave for basic training tomorrow and i can do 35 pushups, 30 situps, and a 18 minute 2 mile run, how fucked am i please give it to me straight i seriously havnt been able to sleep for days, also my penis has an odd shape to it how bad will i get bullied, going in as 11x

Next time, try to go for 40

45 is your new goal.

A 9 minute pace? Well, it'll get you into basic, but it's going to suck. Push yourself for 15, or even 14 by the time you graduate.

91 on ASVAB

Near perfect PT score (95 pushups).

Joining Navy for sure, thought about intelligence because it has a good after military job. Thought out more actiony type jobs like (SEALS,EOD,SWCC) truly gratifying, but life after? Eh.

Might just go back to college since I am 19 and reevaluate what I truly want to do.
>>
What's it like in the Airforce and what jobs should I go for?
>>
>>34031938
Air force life is comfy, google all the AFSCs and read them all.
>>
how much does mos matter if you are doing an option 40 contract, the only ones available right now are 91c and 92g which both seem pretty lame
>>
So how exactly does PT/Exercise work in boot camp?

Is it literally every single day? Wouldn't that completely screw up your muscles because of overexertion?

Do they even have rest days with minimal PT and nothing but stretching/light exercise? I would imagine you'd probably be physiologically safe to spend several hours doing drill, and besides that and 12 hours of fuck-fuck games I can't imagine there's anything else to do, right?
>>
>>34032229
USMC btw

What happens if a large part of the platoon (≤10%) are either minimally in-shape or less motivated and cause the DIs to resort to death-by-PT? Wouldn't that seriously fuck up your body if it happened repeatedly and people just couldn't get their shit together?

Say it's different people fucking up every time. Is there a limit to it?

I'm not worried because I've been smoked to chunks but I also know that it's extremely unhealthy and quite literally dangerous, especially for the ex-couch taters that slip into basic with 2 pullups, 30 situps, and a 15 minute 1.5mi run
>>
>>34032258

I like how /MEG/ consistently thinks that DIs and DSs are robots programmed by a teenager.

They're people, most of them have been adults and been in the military for 10+ years. They get a bunch of training before they're allowed to take the job. If you die on their watch it means a huge investigation that could easily change their cushy "retire at 40" life plan into working at a gas station until they're in their 70s. Nobody wants that, nobody wants to be within ten miles of something like that.

Despite the hilarious anecdotes you'll hear from people, DIs don't fuck around when it comes to safety. They'll push you hard enough to make you improve, but not hard enough to do any real damage.
>>
>>34032285
i don't think boot camp is about fitness anyway. it's more about mental toughness than anything, teaching you to suck it up and move on from the pain
>>
What happens if you gotta PEE while getting smoked by the DI?
