FINALLY, got the rest of the ammo I bought with my Mle 1936. This is some interesting repacked ammo. The guys on gunboards think it was repacked by an importer, but I have some doubts. It's interesting nonetheless. I've seen some 1940, 1946, and 1948 dated cases on the few I pulled out of the tears in the packaging.

I've always wanted some WWII dated French ammo. If they were repacked by an importer, that begs the question of where they got such old ammo from?

You're like a bunch of LARPers that do nothing except stroke your rifle and go shoot it twice a year at a public range. It's fucking pathetic, just stop.

So what's the deal with Yugo Mausers seemingly never having matching wood color for the upper handguard and the stock? I have a 24/47, so I figured it was because of it going through a rearsenal program, but I've seen a lot of M48's that have the same unmatching wood color among their parts.

Can someone explain to me why people sporterize guns? Is the extra stock really THAT much of a problem?

Same reason why someone buys a rifle with negligible recoil and puts a muzzle break on it.
Same reason why someone buys a rifle designed to be super light and throws 30 pounds worth of useless shit on it.

There is always the idiot that has to 'do something.'

>>34004306
Honestly the stock and weight isn't really the main reason I believe most people sporterize rifles. I think it has more to do with length and pointability than anything. Swinging a full length rifle on a deer is hard to do without excess movement, especially in a blind stand or thicket. Most shots you'll take in my area are under 150 yards, usually 75 or less so the 200+meter zero on several surplus rifles is more of a hindrance than anything

I think all 8x57 clips will interchange, and I'm fairly confident about the 7x57mm ones. The 7.65 clips I'm not so sure; I think the FN-made M30 rifles in 7.65 need different clips, because they don't have the little arm on the bolt stop box to reach up and put pressure on the clip when it's in the rifle.

Yeah, it was definitely done by a proper armorer. The barrel is K98k production, but the receiver and bolt are from a Gew98. It is 100% matching (stock, bands, everything) and the bore is mirror-shiny. I think some of the small parts like the safety lever are WWII production, as they have Waffenamts and Nazi eagles on them.

Anyone know how I might find out when it was converted? The only thing I can find is a small "39" stamped on the barrel, so that might mean it was converted in 1939 (or the barrel was made in '39) or it could be nothing.

>OK SO mauser 95 = small ring = 5x57 at first; too light to withstand 308 so 7,62 nato 150gr only
Way back when, the US Army Ordnance Dept. did a study of captured Spanish 7x57mm ammo; it was found to generate an average chamber pressure of 48,000CUP. 7.62NATO max chamber pressure is 50,000CUP, so there's really not that much of a difference in the chamber pressures of the two cartridges. The reason the Chilean M95 7.62 conversions are sketchy is that to convert them they just enlarged the original bore, and then drilled the chamber out and soldered in a new 7.62x51mm. It has been documented that the heat/pressure of firing has caused the solder to fail, allowing the chamber insert to back out of the barrel and decreasing headspace.

I don't know how good or how bad they did it. I wouldn't really use that site as evidence one way or another. They still spread the myth that .308 has wildly more pressure than 7.62NATO.

I haven't bought milsurp in over a year, pic is my last purchase.
Mainly because the only ranges where I live now are all indoor. Maybe I'll get a P.08 or something next.
>>
>>34015584
I'm French, for the scope + the mount I think it cost between 500 to 700€

but when it comes to gun, everything is super exepensive in my cucked country so...
>>
>>34015618
They're about $750 or more here usually so I don't think it's too far off from what you guys pay. Is 7.5 French still impossible for you guys to own?
>>
>>34015635
since 2013 all the military calibers are ok to buy, exept for the 5,56 an 7.62x39 so you don't find french surplus but you find some partizan

and also a lot of these gun before the 2013 law were re-chambered in different calibers like 300 savage, 7-08rem or 30-284
>>
>>34015677
Yes, it's horrible that you guys had to do that just to own a piece of your national history.
>>
>>34015683
mine is in 30-284 because it's a before 2013, so I must reload an buy 284winch brass to reform and then put a .308 bullet in it

I know the gun law in my country are far from perfect, but with the right paperwork I can still buy almost whatever I want, handguns ar15...

My understanding is that there aren't many 49/56s left in France. Or 36s for that matter.
>>34015751
Sounds just like the Lebels and Berthiers that were rechambered to .348Win.
>>
>>34015821
there is not much french surplus rifle because my country don't sell them directly to civilians, they generally give them to shitty africans country or sell them in belgian or germany...

so almost all the french surplus here come from germany or belgian, how stupid is that ?

and the price is in consequence, today a 49/56 cost more than 2K€ here

hopefully I bought mine years ago, and not a this price

Yeah, I know. It's a shame. As much as I enjoy French guns, I would love that you guys could enjoy them as much as I can.

It's cheaper for French collectors to buy guns in America and pay to ship them back to France than it is to find it in France. Of course, partly that is do to the fact French guns are so undervalued and unappreciated here. A few months back a guy bought a Meunier rifle from a pawn shop for a few hundred bucks. A collector in France paid 20 times what he paid for it.

Welp, went to the fun show. There was a surprising amount of milsurp there actually, none of it rapishly priced. I actually considered making an offer on a Turkish Mauser and a T53, but decided against both to keep my shekels for something better.

Let's see if I can remember it all.

Several SKSs including a few Yugos and a Soviet.
2 Turk Mausers that looked nice
T53
Several M1 carbines
A bunch of other off-brand Mausers (South American and Spanish I think)
A couple Garands
A Ross Rifle Mk2 (sporterized)
Couple Mosins
Couple K11s
K31
Vz 24
M24/47
Couple K98ks
A BUNCH of Lugers (All fucking expensive)

Pretty sure I'm missing some of it.

Question: I know these Navy Arms 2A1 conversions aren't really milsurp, but since they're still Enfield actions, I thought I'd ask here.

Haven't shot it yet, but when I tried cycling some live 7.62 rounds, I noticed it doesn't really eject the rounds (even with a deliberate motion), they just kinda plop out or rattle around in the chamber. Is this normal, is it because it's still a live round, or is the extractor fucked?

No it was just a standard one made in 1938, very clean though. have a M39 and not gonna trade that thing ever, love it too much. The guy who had it was real old and looked to just make a younger guy happy then to make a real profit I guess.
>>
>>34020485
you look for wear near the last inch of the muzzle, the rifling will be smoothed out and the lands and grooves disappear on a worn barrel. if you can see crisp rifling its good. also check for rust and pitting inside, but mainly the last inch of bore is the part that needs the closest inspection because of cleaning methods using a steel rod, this part tends to be the most worn, and since its the last bit of barrel to touch the bullet before the bullet leaves, its the most critical
>>
>>34020535
No rust or pitting inside, and from what you told me i went and checked it again and it looks good. I'm happy with what I got.
>>
>>34020534
yeah i think thats what happened man, enjoy it, for a first mauser its hard to beat that. just because its russian capture doesnt mean its any worse, its still 100% german made through and through. just has been reblued by the russians, and since parts are likely not matching serials, it has lost some collectible value but they shoot every bit as good as the non russian captures, usually better since the russians only kept the ones in best condition
>>
>>34020559
>>34020556
and from a collectors standpoint, i would want one of each. so now you got the russian capture under your belt, you can hunt for a unmolested german bringback and have both pieces of history. my russian captures shoot better than i can see, easily get 2" groups from a bench at 100yds with surplus ammo, which seems to be the limit of my eyesight and the irons
>>
>>34020556
im just telling you from the RC mausers ive seen, and ive seen a lot, the wood and metal on yours is atypically nice, a huge plus that the markings are all intact as well. i would be very very happy if i were you, and you traded a mosin and $200, you definitely came out with a really good deal
>>
>>34020577
I'm gonna definitely have fun shooting it. Is commercial ammo fine to run in it, it's not like a garand that only takes certain kind well right?
>>
>>34020594
I haven't gotten a chance to clean the wood up yet, it's still nasty as hell. The rest of the gun is cleaning up pretty nice though.
>>
>>34020601
nope, it can handle any and all types of ammo no problem, it is a bolt action gun. commercial ammo will actually be lower pressure and easier on the gun than surplus.

the garand has a semiautomatic gas system that requires special attention to not abuse, the mauser has none of this.

you will find they are zeroed from the arsenal for heavy ball which is what the germans used in ww2, 198 grain weight projectile. if you shoot commercial ammo with lighter bullets, you wont have any safety concerns but will have to aim lower since the lighter bullets will shoot a bit high for point of aim
>>
>>34020651
Got it, holy shit i'm so excited to take this gun to the range. I've always been interested in ww2 guns and the german ones take the cake for me. I'll try to zero it in and all that, never done it before.

yugo surplus from the 70s and 80s forward is amazing quality, but still used corrosive berdan primers so requires immediate cleaning, no leaving your gun uncleaned for 3 weeks until you shoot it next. its the same factory as PPU

if you see this new production romanian steel case in stock or for sale anywhere, stay away from it, its known to be out of spec and total shit, wont chamber in many rifles

have fun anon, i personally shoot yugo surplus out of mine because i stocked up when it was cheap, if you come across it for sale for a good price dont be scared by the "corrosive" description, just clean your bore with water first, then dry it out and clean with regular gun solvent and oil

unless the previous owner messed around with it, the sights should be zeroed with 198 grain german spec ammo. theres not really much you can do to "zero" a mauser, besides adjusting the windage by drifting the front sight. dont fuck with this until you test out some different ammo or make sure the ammo you are shooting is ww2 loading spec. try the PPU stuff first, 196 grain, it should be dead on and calibrated to the elevation slider on rear sight for bullet drop. anything lighter weight projectile, might have some different points of impact and you will never match the calibration on the rear slider unless you install a taller front sight, then file it down to dial it in. id rather just use the milspec ammo

also before you fuck around with the sights, realize that disassembling and reassembling the rifle affects the zero, so play with loosening and tightening the action screws a bit, and try to make sure the action is set in the stock the same way it was before in the armory when the arsenal zeroed the guns (which admittedly, ivan the russian armorer sometimes didnt do the best job of). still, before looking to adjust sights i would play with tension of action screws, over torquing or screws that are too lose will through off your point of impact or open your groups up

ahhh, to be young again. godspeed anon, i remember my first mauser and the excitement and joy it brought. a huge upgrade from your mosin, you will love it i promise. just make sure to clean the grease out of the mag spring, and take apart the bolt and clean out all the preservative grease in there as well, it will bog down the firing pin spring. you may need new springs, shoot it first and see if it gives you any problems. it is a 80 year old gun afterall
