They tend to jam far more then you would want in a home defense gun. It's a gimmick they don't have a enough juice to reliably cycle semi automatics either, although you could probably purpose build a semi auto if you wanted to pay double for ammo

for mossberg 500 and 590's theres a plstic plug you can buy that you can jam up onto the carrier and pop it back out easily with your thumb. I can also attest in my 500 they do a full flip and jam sometimes.
