The SADF needed to be good to defend the Apartheid regime. It was such a terrifyingly efficient force that their political enemies could only respond to them with sanctions and diplomacy. Meanwhile the SANDF does fuck all, no one is going to invade South Africa, therefore the government underfunds it and political favour rather than merit gets officers promoted.

It's still South Africa, simply because it has a sizeable white minority in it's army. Not even in a racist way but the African is incapable of fighting as part of a modern army, unless he is well led. 95% of black African officers are not good officers, they are usually only there because they bribed the right guy or are related to a politician. On top of this they are very poorly versed in the art of war, and this counts double for their men. The standard of training in most African armies is abysmal, South Africa avoids this by still having some SADF veterans in the ranks and an effective training school with enough dedicated white soldiers to keep the army just about working.

South Africa is also far better equipped than Nigeria, which is currently under an arms embargo.

Having read Eugene's biography I don't think he did do it, nor did his section of the SAP/intelligence community. Then again he has always said he's keeping certain things quiet and with his lawyer to prevent other whities from bumping him off, so we probably won't know until he pops his clogs.

Well he has already admitted to tens of murders, so one more isn't too much for him to do. But I do doubt he did it, but I have a feeling when he dies his lawyer is going to release an awful lot of information to incriminate a lot of people in a lot of unsolved crimes.
