In /k/'s opinion, what is the best gun to use as a ranch rifle? A bolt gun? Semiauto? Lever action perhaps? My vote is just a plain-jane A2 style AR. Discuss.
>>
there's no such thing as a ranch rifle faggot, what the fuck do you think some piddly ass bitch coyotes are gonna do shoot back? winchester model 70 in .30-06 or browning x-bolt it'll blow those little fuckers away and show em whose boss.
>>
Depends on what you plan on shooting. Groundhogs and coyotes? Yep, absolutely. I'd even say a 14.5" AR to make it that much handier and lighter.
>>
Probs semi auto.
Probs 30 cal since you'd only be taking a handful of shots anyway and if recoil is an issue for you you have no business being on a ranch or outdoors.

Get the m&p10 or whatever the fuck it's called and call it a day

I don't know if it's a "ranch" rifle, but it's the most universally useful farm gun I've had my hands on.
The way the folder stock works makes it an ideal vehicle gun and it's very light and comfy to carry around with my 10rd mags. And stripper clips fit into pockets easily.

SKS Imo, cheap, effective, rugged, cheap ammo, will drop most things up to about a cougar or small bear. You can lose it in a ravine or have it crushed in a quad bike rollover and not care too much.

>>33997466
Like this guy says an M44 Nugget Carbine, isnt a bad option either if you think you might have to shoot something bigger than a mountain lion, bayonets a plus on both guns, giving you a poker for both dead checks and in case you get surprised.

Hey there, newfriend.
>>
.223 for pasture gun. AR platform is fine.

Big Bore lever gun for clearing the hogs out of the bottom land. I use a Marlin Guide Gun in .444 Marlin. Overkill, but very fun and bullet travel is significantly less than higher velocity smaller diameter bullets.

I've been thinking of getting a pistol round rifle for stray dog removal around the ranch house and roads.

City dwellers see a lot of land and decide to dump their dogs. I'm a dog lover and take no joy in killing them, but they will pack up and they will do what they need to do to survive.

Just before the calves drop, we've got to take care of the problem or anytime the packs get to big or to bold.

May go with .500 blackout upper.

Goal is clean kills fairly close with less chance of long bullet travel/ricochets
>>
>>33999092

Hi there city friend. You might look at a map. Most of the American land mass is not a metromess and is full of farms and ranches.

You should visit some time. Lots of shooting and quality innawoods time.

The point is to keep the pack of dogs away from the Ranch house not make it a comfy spot for them to eat our cats and chickens.

Dogs are smart. They leave the cows alone until calving time. We put the cows in a smaller pasture so we can keep up with the calves and the dogs will be there everyday. Not much choice but to kill them.

This shit is pretty good even from a babby carbine barrel.

And then consider that you're carrying lots of 30rd magazines with this stuff, it's accurate, powerful and easy to control
5.56x45mm can do amazing things when applied right.

>>
>>33999494

I hear you. We get a couple of full blood Rottweilers every year. They go almost instantly feral and will run from any truck they see or hear.

The smaller dogs we normally find dead. People will just pull over and shoot their own dog and leave it in the ditch. Seen them do it many times.

The bigger dogs they usually just let them out and drive off.

There is no Animal Control to come and get them.

When you look out over a pasture and see a pack of 10 large dogs trailing a pregnant cow with their noses to the ground, there pretty much is only one answer.

>>
>>33999564

I have an AR, actually 2. One Sp-1 and one A2.

OK cowboy. I believe I am responsible for every round I fire. I don't believe in the big sky little bullet theory. If I can't make a safe shot with a perfectly clear back drop, I don't make the shot.

I'm not shooting for shits and giggles. A lower velocity larger diameter bullet will let me take more shots but still make clean kills.
>>
>>33999605
>People will just pull over and shoot their own dog and leave it in the ditch.
Goddammit that's unbelievably unfair and fucked up.
>>
>>33999639
The whole point of a SCAR is it's not heavy as long as you don't load a bunch of tacticool shit on it.. get a 5 or 10 round magazine if you're not planning to knock out a herd of hogs..

I'm just spitballing though, I like the idea of an A2 or just a cheap AR-15 in general.

The idea of a "Ranch Rifle" is a rifle that is affordable and can shoot further than a shotgun. That used to mean a simple bolt action as it was cost effective and lighter than a shotgun.

With AR-15 getting down below $400, it is a solid choice for a ranch rifle now. Now dont get me wrong, I'd rather have a bolt action for hogs and others. That being said, I'd rather have a AR-15 with 30 rd mag for any surprises.
>>
>>34000278
I wonder if 20 round mags would be better. Probably not, you'd end up carrying more weight for the ammo
>>
>>33999758
You near Gunter by any chance?
>>
>>34000518
30 is the best answer. 10, you might as well have a pistol, 20.. might as well go 30 as cheaper to buy. 40+ rds is silly.
>>
>>33999848
Allah will guide his bullets
>>
>>34000518
Honestly, 20rd mags isn't an awful idea, 20rds is still quite a lot of firepower, considering you have a rifle, and your gun will be a bit lighter (especially with plastic mags) and shorter profile.
>>
>>34000565

Nope, SE of the Dallas metro mess.
>>
>>33999616
Damn I need to get me one of those, been too long since I've had something that looks that fine.

Luckily there is a cute new intern at work so hopefully that changes soon.
>>
>>34001021
I know, I seems like a good idea when you have it in the magwell. But when I think of taking two mags, it starts to become more of a bad idea. Two 20 round mags is 40 bullets. Just ten more than a 30 round mag. Three 20 rounders is just 60 bullets. You could get that with two 30 rounders and overall you would be carrying less weight per bullet.

The AR-15 is currently dirt cheap (a medium-quality AR from the internet is literally cheaper than a high-end .22 plinker on the informal trading market here in rural appalachia). Ammunition is also pretty affordable. The round is small enough that it's not overkill to shoot varmints like possums or coyotes with it, but it's also more than capable of putting down basically anything that's troubling you in North America with enough shots and a steady aim.
>>
>>34001021
>your gun will be a bit lighter (especially with plastic mags)
plastic mags weigh more than aluminum mags mostly cause they are much thicker. plastic doesnt automatically mean lighter.
>>
>>34004914
Depends on your gun.

Plastic AR mags are lighter than typical aluminum mags.

Plastic AK mags are a LOT lighter than steel AK mags.

>>34006270
>>34004914

I keep a mossberg 500 out in the shop garage. I enjoy the ability of going from slugs to birdshot as needed for the animals we have in MN.

One point I have noticed is no one mentions the durability of these different firearms. I don't personally own an Ar15 yet, but would you guys feel like you could leave that rifle in an unheated open to the humidity outbuilding? I'm just wondering how much neglect can these suggested firearms can really take.
