Are the Crkt minimalist bowies good? I know Crkt isn't the best, but it seems like a decent design.
>>
>>33994463
Crkt isn't bad. At least it's a step up from Kershaw trash.

Had a wharncliffe minimalist, Bowie should be just as good
>>
>>33994589
What's wrong with Kershaw? I know their lower end is chinkshit but it bought the leek, skyline, and their other shit was good? I'll probably pick up the bowie though.

>>33994599
Nothing, I've loved my Skyline, Leek, Knockout, and Dividend from them.

>>
>>33995022
I am, sadly I don't own that knife yet. I do collect though. I just like the picture.
>>
>>33994589
>Had a wharncliffe minimalist, Bowie should be just as good

it isn't.
The handle profiling is slightly different - bowie minimalist has deeper choils, and wasn't comfortable for me at all. Also the handle design on the minimalist doesn't work as well with the blade angle on a bowie version.

I also collect Italian autos! spending so much on knives you'll never use is even worse than admitting to spending lots of time on this site...

anyway, I hope you find yourself a Diana, but make sure you purchase from a reputable dealer on sharperdeal auctions or on the talkblade forums, rather than a site that lists with stock photos... at least bladeplay will take returns in a pinch if you get a lemon, though... don't order straight from Angelo! he runs 3knives.

and stay away from roadsideimports/autoknife... he's a sociopath

The COLD STEEL ESPADA XL is a knife POWERFUL enough to cut through the fabric of space and time in a single swipe. I have created a plethora of time rifts to travel into spaces beyond our dimension. I have witnessed the birth and destruction of the universe and what lies beyond. Inside each elegantly forged COLD STEEL ESPADA XL blade lies a flux capacitor surrounded by the 7 Chaos Emeralds. These structures constantly sharpen the blade and alter the quantum structure of its apex, allowing the knife to 'fuzz' through diamonds and other materials with no effort. The knife comes with a Lynn Thompson 1-on-1 master blade wielder class in the hyperbolic time chamber where you are taught to use your COLD STEEL ESPADA XL to it's fullest potential. I have walked across the surface of the sun. I have witnessed events so tiny and so fast, they could hardly be said to have occurred at all. I have opened the room at the top of the dark tower and beheaded the crimson king. I have defeated the Titans with Zeus. I have cut the queer pages for the original necronomicon. I have fought side by side with Jesus Christ on his second coming after the rapture... And all this was only my training. Your understanding of reality is as meaningless and unimportant as a baby's soggy diaper. The COLD STEEL ESPADA XL is a living being capable of the destruction and creation of time, matter, and energy. Andrew Demko and I have been sent across the macroverse on a quest to find the seed particle. With it, we will harness POWER beyond our comprehension. Buy a COLD STEEL ESPADA XL, train with Sensei Thompson, and join us on this quest before the seed falls into the wrong hands. K bye ;^)

Finally got the technique pretty much down for apex sharpener clones. Think I could get it flatter and more polished next time but for now I'm happy with this edge so I'll just use it and get it better next time. at bevel angle of 21 degrees per side I can just about shave my face with it (straight razors usually about 10 dps)

The trick is gluing denim to blank 'stones' of the same size and height as the included diamond plates and coating one in metal polish and one in fine diamond paste and using those as the final steps in the regular progression. Finish with a clean canvas strop.

>>
>>34005168

I bought the bayonet version in 2012 for about $50 on Amazon (OKC, not Phrobis, Buck or Lan-Cay). I needed some sturdy, compact wire cutters to keep on my truck after a fiasco involving a heap of of c-wire and a driveshaft (thanks TL). I asked my unit for a bayonet and they refused to unseal the box because they didn't want to count to fifty once a month, so I bought my own. Never ran over c-wire again, but I tested it and it works fine for cutting wire and cables. Didn't use it as a knife, but it worked pretty good as a hammer and a brush saw. Sorry if this review doesn't help.

Hey /k/ looking for a particular kind of knife that I have only heard of. I can't find anything of it online.

I have heard of this knife from my father and my co-worker, its called a "Spanish Needle". It supposed to be extremely thin and sharp used as an assassin's bladed. My father saidl the one he has seen cut through a pigs throat and didn't even notice untill it turned its head, opened the cut, and bleed out.

Anyone have info on this or even a picture of it. Finding nothing.

How do you like the Strider? I'm the guy who just go the Sebenza, thought about a Strider instead but couldn't find one local to fondle. I may get one down the line, though I'm a bit iffy about giving money to Mick.
>>
>>34010110
its a good knife, ive bought two and sold them both. ill probably end up buying a small micarta inlay at some point. Its a knife i keep coming back to. Its a standard bearer. and any knife at $300+ better look decent next to a sebenza for me to keep it.

So far it hasnt been enough to stick, but i know ill end up with another. Had a 25, and a 21 insingo. I really dont have much in the small knife department and i think the 21 small will fit into that are nicely and the micarta inlays will add just enough to the grip to keep it in my hands instead of trade/ selling.

Its not quite mind blowing as it has much much more competition these days, but its a hell of a knife and its what the competition has always been competeing against. Everyone wants to beat the sebenza for a reason, its a damn good knife Excellent tool
>>
>>34011122
I fondled a micarta one (the shop I went to had three whole cases of CRK stuff) and it was damn nice. I decided to go with the plain one because I liked how slim it was, but if I ever buy another it'll probably be micarta since the grip is so much better.

I'm liking mine a lot so far, it's certainly a hell of a lot nicer than my Benchmade Nakamura, which was only $50 less. The only issue I have with it is that the detent is REALLY stiff, and combined with the pointy thumbstud it's kind of painful to open, but I think it'll probably break in. (And if not I'll probably have a callous before too long...)

The competition thing is interesting, because I'm not entirely sure it has as much as it seems. Yes, there are tons of similarly sized and priced knives on the market now, but they all seem to land in slightly different niches, and the Seb sits in a space between traditional and tacticool that not many other brands seem to try going into.
>>
>>34010132
It was almost llike a folding blade but the handle was much longer to hold the blade. The one he saw the blade ended at a very fune point like a needle.

I asked my co worker about it and he saidbhe has seen them before. They can be different depending on the maker. He says they are traditionally sharpened with fine sand to the point that it will split silk when dropped on it.

not really. good blade and so on but they're a bitch to open even when clean. If sand or something gets in the pivot it's a nightmare. Also assembled in a way where it's difficult to perform any sort of maintenance.

A variation of pic related would be my best guess (many have needle-like points) but frankly I think your coworker got their info from a movie or something. Muh dropped silk cutting is a straight up myth, it's considered a feat to actively cut silk while it's in the air and gravity alone sure as hell isn't going to do it. Not to mention that "assassin's blade" business.
>>
>>34011810
you use the thumbstud differently than youre likely used to. sweep at it sorta from the side. not on top. the motion your thumb takes when sweeping from the side is how a sebenza wants to open. it will fight you otherwise.

Well materials craftsmanship and price. The 21 insingo i had i sold after not carrying for months after i got a rike 1507T. The rike 1507 is just such an amazing knife.

I think i have a place for a ebenza, but a smaller one which a small knife has been a hard nich for me to fill perfectly for me. and with the inlays to make that small knife feel fuller will probably be right.
>>
>>34011037
i love it,despite its flaws it is a good knife.it has a bit of lock stick, but i knew that very well when buying it.loved the design.is so comfy in hand in all grips.in terms of having a user knife i think the strider would be better than the sebenza. also it has an outstanding warranty.probably the best in the knife industry.yeah you wont have to worry about giving mick money for these anymore because the only place you will find the Smf/sng models is on the secondary market. strider has closed its doors so get em while you can.still mick is cool enought o still honor the warranties on these knives.saw a thread where a guy broke the blade, strider replaced the the blade,in the owners desired steel.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, but it's still kicking my ass. I find it almost impossible to put purely sideways force on the stud, there just isn't really enough room to get in between the scale and stud so my thumb has to come from above. Maybe once my thumb stops hurting from my initial opening attempts it'll be easier though.

The only other thing I can think of in this size class that you might want to try is the Lionsteel TRE. It's probably equivalent in quality to the Seb, though it doesn't have that "solid lump of titanium" feel.

>>34014067
I actually haven't had any lock stick issues with mine, so far the only issue is having to adjust my grip. I'll have to keep an eye out for a Strider, though I need to hold off on more knife purchases for a while.
>>
>>34016101
Woah, holy fuck, I just figured it out. I need to stick my thumb into the gap, with my nail against the stud, and then it opens no problem. Crazy, I can't believe how much difference even a tiny bit of downward pressure makes.
>>
>>34016165
yeah man, from the side. not on top. You open a sebenza different.

sounds like you got it and your thumb will never hurt again

Anyone recommend me a good knife for self defense in europe?
>>
>>34010362
Yes, insane value.
Don't listen to >>34012181, I took mine apart in 5 minutes with pilers and a hammer. There are great videos on youtube too. After taking it apart I improved the smoothness with sandpaper and some oil. Now it opens with little to no effort.
>>
>>34016380
Yeah, I was trying to do that before, but couldn't figure out how to get only side pressure with no downward until I tried using the top of my finger instead of the bottom.

Now I'm onto my next challenge, though, which is sharpening. I cut up a bunch of cardboard and now I don't seem to be able to get a good edge back on it, even though I have no issue with other knives with much harder steels (M390, S90V, etc.) I can get it plenty sharp for work but it won't slice paper or shave like my other knives do. I have a loaded strop on the way (fuck yeah Amazon Prime same day delivery), maybe that will help.

Can i hold them off /k/? cops aren't a option, it would take 1 hour to them reach me house
>>
>>34017834
Why the fuck don't you have a gun?

Best thing you can do is set up traps. A rusted machete won't kill/incapacitate in one hit. Find a heavy blunt object(lots of bonus points if it has a sturdy spike or other protrusion on the end like a pick).
Sneak behind them, whack em in the back of the head with the protrusion where the skull is the thinnest. I would suggest leaving your house and hiding in bushes or something when you see them coming.

Otherwise, you're fucked.

Not very. the knife was smaller than I expected.

I went to the cold steel parking lot sale. most of the knives were more expensive than on amazon. sword prices idk.

Factory second/old stock prices arent good but if you have cash you can haggle it down to something worthwhile.

They have lots of 5 dollar goofy machetes. that's all I came home with.

Here's what you do.
Attach a nail to one end of a sturdy stick. Make sure that shit is secure, very secure.
Wait outside your house, preferably in some good cover.
Wait for the hoodlums to arrive. Let them take the bait, wait until they go in to your house.
Sneak up and stab the fuck out of their tires. This shit will be loud, so you'll have to work quickly.
Hit as many tires as you can, aiming for at least three. Then run the fuck away and call the cops.

Alternatively you can just place nails under their tires so that when they try to drive off they drive over the nails and end up with an unusable vehicle.

There, no manslaughter charges, no assault charges, no assault with a deadly weapon charges. The thiefs will either have to leg it or call in a tow. Plenty of time for the coppers to show up. Also make sure to record as much as you can. Video evidence will cover your ass as much as fuck theirs.

Are you sure about that? I was only aware that getting it wet will render the appendage unusable.

Pro-tip: if you ever cut a toe/finger off, put it ON ice, NOT IN ice. If it absorbs too much water it's toast.
>>
>>34019602
or put a shit ton of screws and nails through a longish piece of rope or steel cable, put that under the car tires so it will be driven over.
make them fuck off quick like so the nails will stick in the tires and bind up the axle and slow or possibly stop the car as well as flatten tires

>>
>>34026024
YW. Stick around for a while, I'm sure other anons will have other recommendations. Off the top of my head I can't think of anything other than the Kershaw Leek. $50 can get you a pretty nice folding knife.
>>
>>34026041

Will do lad. Thanks again
>>
>>34025624
Check out the Kershaw Skyline and Spyderco's lower end folders. (Tenacious, Efficient, etc.)

If you're willing to stretch your budget a bit more, the Spyderco Delica is around $70 and is one of the greatest EDC knives of all time.
>>
>>34026111

Will do. Any types of steel I should keep an eye out for to know what I'm getting or should I just trust reputable companies ?
>>
>>34026183
Steel is a whole can of worms, but most knives in your price range will be using 8cr13 or AUS-8, which are basically the same thing and are both decent but not great. Heat treat matters as much as steel choice, and it's the larger factor in this price range. Sticking to reputable brands should keep you safe, though.

The one major exception is the Skyline, which is made in the US and uses a steel whose name I forget but which is noticeably better than 8cr, though not quite as good as the VG10 on the Delica.
>>
>>34026183
>should I just trust reputable companies ?

Yes. What really matters is a manufacturer's ability to consistently deliver a good heat treatment. The whole reason people don't constantly shit all over Buck for using 420 steel is because they've got the heat treat down.
>>
>>34026663
>>34026541

Ill keep this in mind. I'm probably gonna squeeze the trigger on a Kershaw Lifter or Shuffle 2. this will be the only knife I buy r-right guys..?

I kind of like the styling on this blade but I wish the handle was more traditional g10 or something you know.

It's a hard plasticy material used a lot in knife handles/grips.

i cut out platforms from plexiglas then glue on jeans / leather straps. Tormek paste is all I use.
Gonna get fine natural stones, up to 10k grain, from aliexpress, I think they will give a better result.

>>

It's what I've been carrying for a while, but it hasn't seen much use because I live a very dull life.

I did break the torsion bar playing with the speedsafe. Kershaw mailed me a replacement no charge.
>>
>>34026761
I recommend against the Lifter if you're really going to use it, recurve blades are a bitch to sharpen, and those steel handled Kershaws are heavy as hell. The Shuffle 2 is decent, though I'd rather get the DIY version because I don't like tanto blades.

Check out the Dividend if you haven't already, it's in your price range, it's US made, has a really practical blade shape, and it's super light.

Gotta admit I'm mirin those Sebs, especially the inlay version.

I came damn close to getting a micarta version or one of pic related, but decided I ought to save a hundred bucks and try the knife in its most classic form.
>>
>>34027600
I had the original version, not bad for the money. (Actually I still have most of it, but the pivot screw rolled off my table while I had it apart and was never seen again.)

I'd switch the clip to the other end if it were mine, an assisted flipper with no safety sketches me out when carried tip down. (Unless you back pocket carry it.)
>>
>>34027461
great, the tanto is my number one go too blade. its just so good. both fall shut.

favorite knife, bought the gold to have a pristine one laying around, the tanto has been that good.

the feist is very neat little knife

Those Rikes have incredible actions. A friend has one of the beefier models (this one or something similar) and I was blown away by it.

Speaking of action, if any of you pivot junkies haven't tried the new ZT 0460, go check one out. I fondled one a few days ago and was floored by it, it's like the blade is floating on magnets instead of bearings, really impressive considering it's relatively light too.

someday, i just bought that protech and the kizer feist recently so knife budget is gone and i still have the lil nilakka on preorder.

The tanto i have is fully broke in and it almost feels like theres nothing in the pivot. its disgustingly smooth.

nuts how they got such a light weight blade to fall shut

I bought a spring assisted knife a month ago. Thought it was the coolest shit ever. Just bought a new knife that is just regular manual action.. I don't now why but the one without any assist is much more enjoyable to open and close. Why is this, /ktg/?
>>
>>34028169
because it doesnt have some spring covering up a potentially shitty action. you can appreciate the work that went into a manual knife, its a very tactile thing and it only gets better.

like those rike knives i posted. the blades fall shut under their own weight.

One of those Rike kwaikens is next on my list. BladeHQ got the version I want in-stock, so next paycheck I'm snatching one up. Gonna go with a curved tip though, I just don't find angled tanto tips very useful.

Updated collection pic; some weeks ago I said I was getting a Shirogorov Neon and people wanted pics. Got the WE Knives Karambit this Saturday and it's pretty sweet. Usually I don't like the mallninja-tier shit, but the knife is a very high-quality framelock.

i make tons of shallow cuts at work so the second tip is highly useful, its a tool blade profile and it was wasted on the dam mall ninjas. its very useful

i got my second one as a regualr tip.

I actually like the Phoenix better as a tool. It's harder to open but its edge is designed for cutting unlike the Warlock's dagger blade.

Not that I can carry either Paragon in my state though. They're definitely gravity knives.

Why am I not seeing many serrated blades in this thread? I'm looking to edc, is 3.6 inches in the blade too much?
>>
>>34030349
Opens pretty quick for a folder. Nice factory edge too.
>>34030760
I'd have a lot more fucking Microtechs if I was that guy.
>>
>>34030996
cause most folding knives dont have enough real estate to make a half and half worth it. you either have a really small saw or a really small knife. and if you plan on resharppening your knife at all which is a good thing to do then straight edge is far easier.

a 3.6inch blade is an excellent size knife, it will do all the tasks you need.

BM is decent these days, their shitty quality control is made up by an excellent warranty and customer service, so that way you can do quality control yourself and if your not satisified with a brand new $100 plus knife, you send it back under warranty before you ever use for something that should never have left the factory and is something much rarer for their competition.

so you could do worse, but you can do better.
