Blade Runner was the defining moment for cyberpunk, it was the piece that inspired so many other cyberpunk-themed works. Definitely worth a watch.

Shadowrun is a tabletop roleplaying game (and video game series) set in a cyberpunk future where magic forcefully returned to Earth, transforming many humans into Orcs, Elves, Dwarves and more. The combination of magic and tech provide for a multitude of playstyles, and you're going to want as diverse a team as possible to go toe-to-toe with the megacorperations.

Akira is an anime movie about a gang of teenage bikers in a sprawling megacity who watch one of their members be kidnapped by government forces. What follows is some really fucked up experiment shit. Highly recommend.

The global conspiracy is there but it's based around the augmentations. /Are Lad/ Ross has already summed it up well but augmentations and the social dehumanization of auged people is very surface level compared to DX where augmentation was a symptom to a larger problem. I thought it was interesting and perceptive that IW turned that on its head a bit and said technology can be a path forward, the good or bad of it comes from use. IW was p bad tho and maybe overly simplistic in its themes.

True. The original DX takes conspiracies to a whole new level. The entire game is 100% redpilled and HR doesn't go that far but I think its unfair to say that HR isn't really cyberpunk. I haven't played or read anything about IW because of the huge amount of negativity surrounding it.

That's a weird one though. Great movie, but it's more a noir story dressed in Cyberpunk wallpaper.

The two genres have a lot of similarities, but one core difference is in the story's outcome. Noir protagonists nearly always fail to enact any change in their quest for the truth. I don't believe Deckard ultimately changed anything about the 'system'.


Now contrast that with how much of a paradigm shift you see the protagonists set off in GitS, Neuromancer, or Deus Ex.
