So a week or two ago my buddy (who is a bit of a dumbass when it comes to guns honestly) really wanted a Luger so he went looking for one on gun broker. He found one and placed a bid on it for like 900 I think, but was about to buy now for 1200 because he wanted it so bad. The gun was an x marked russian capture with import markings obviously. My gut feeling was that was way too much, but I admit I often have trouble estimating the values of surplus guns, so I didn't really say anything.Personally, I feel lugers are a bit overrated and that people often way over pay for them simply because they "are a luger" What do yall think?
also I should add that someone outbid him for it before he could pay the 1200 and buy it immediately. So he ended up not buying it anyways

Apparently it's worth it to him, and it's his money, so fuck it...if it make him happy, why not?
>>33991181
very true, people do often over look that point. However he is sort of obsessed with getting a good deal on guns, and was of the belief the gun would immediately appreciate in value. Which is why I ask
I love lugers so much because of their unique action. It's so cool to watch it shoot, and to shoot, and on top of that it comes in 9mm, which is easy to find unlike other pistols of the era
Lugers are... not that great. They're finicky, over-complicated, unrealiable, and use a gimmicky action. The fact that they are attractive to look at and OMG FUKIN NAZI SO EDJEE have cursed them into being one of the most famous handguns of all time.
But to be honest... they completely fucking suck. Ass.
Pic related is superior in every conceivable metric except looking like a Buck Rogers Zap Gun and having a gimmick action. You can hate and shitpost and sperg out all you want, but facts are facts.

Mag release on the Luger is better. Otherwise, I agree.
>>33991472
>thinking it drops free like modern handguns, or even a 1911
It doesn't. It's still a 2 handed operation just like the P-38, hence the little shitty pull-tab circles on the bottom of the Luger mag.
Lugers suck man. Totally and utterly.
>>33991157
that's pretty average for what you'll pay for a good condition luger but he probably could have got it for less if he was patient.
>>33991454
Do you know why the swiss were obsesses with toggle locks for the longest time? Seems like they made shit more complicated for no reason but then again ive got 20/20 hindsight.
>>33991454
Have you ever disassembled a Luger?
They have very few parts; the "complicated" part everyone says is complicated to manufacture due to tolerances in the toggle.
And with proper ammo (nice fairly hot loaded brass cased stuff) they work perfectly fine for anyone who actually has a hand and doesn't limp wrist everything.
And this is coming from someone who hates nazis guts.
>>33991524
It does drop free.
Have you ever handled a Luger before or are you just being a fucking retard?
>>33992474
Yes I have and... no, it doesn't.
>>33991454
Fact is Luger's are not unreliable, most lugers out there today have worn out springs and mix matched parts, they also were designed for hot ammo.
The unreliable Luger myth is fuddlore at its finest, but I wouldn't expect more from you.

>Someone who hates nazis guts
Cringe.
ITT: Hitler fuccbois flip autistic shit when their suparedgeee memegun gets put in its place
>>33992486
Huh.
What year, what type of mag, and was it all matching?
The one I am basing this off of is matching between the toggle and the frame and has a different barrel/slide-thingy.
It has an aluminum bottom Nazi production mag.
The frame is either commercial or, more likely due to the markings, a 20's production police model.
>>33992535
There's also the fact that some magazines had some shoddy manufacturing and would bend over time leading to friction on the follower.
>>33992566
But the P38 isn't a nazi gun even though it entered service during WW2 but the Luger was in service long before hitler was even known about but IS a nazi gun?
>>33992566
kill yourself
I own a luger and p38
The p38 is better to shoot and the luger is better to impress people, fingerfuck and jerk off to
That being said theyre both better than any amerikike shit from the time period

Only better than the 1911 because it used german superior 9mm cartridge over slow fat american .45

>Reliability
When I was learning to shoot, my father's Luger put up with my faggot-ass limpwristing better than any other handgun. It's odd, but in my experience functional.
To be fair though, I have a bit of a fetish for exotic mechanisms and design language
>>33995510
The Luger is a very interesting gun to me as well.
It's the first viable semi automatic combat handgun, not clumsy and large like the borchardt but still reliable and accurate.
I've found that the myth surrounding the Luger being an unreliable gun is entirely based on the bring backs of us troops and post war imports of "mix masters" guns assembled with non matching parts, which in a hand fit design like the Luger is not kosher.
On top of mismatched guns the veterans bringing them home would want to shoot them, but 9mm ammo in the us wasn't loaded like the German military 9mm, and the weaker ammunition just doesn't have the ass to reliably cycle a toggle action like the Luger.
Poor quality replacement magazines, magazines damaged in combat, worn out springs on old guns all add up to giving returning GI's an unfavorable opinion of the gun, this then gets taken as gospel and since the guns are relatively rare and after ww2 never went back into production, no one knew differently.
Ignorance at its finest, as all fuddlore is.
