I've always wanted a FAL or G3, but they're verboten in Canada. My only option is the Norinco M305, but I don't want to dump money into "accurizing" or Americanizing it.

I'm looking to buy an imbel parts kit and I see a few on gunbroker and other assorted websites. What should I know when buying one? What are the chances I'll have to replace the barrel?

I've noticed that almost all scars in military use have a vertical grip. is that because they're more comfortable that way, or is it because short length of pull is so popular right now?

Pretty low chance that the barrel is fucked, as long as its original. I'd expect about 2-3 MOA out of it, but thats standard for pretty much all FALs other than STGs. IMBELs made of good steel and have a complete chrome lining, plus I'd be surprised if the Brazilians did much with them other than drill. Mine still looks brand new after going through Brazilian service, Chilean service, and the 2000-some-odd rounds I've dumped through it in the last year.

The lowers are also pretty sturdy b/c Brazil cannot into alloys so they made them entirely out of steel. Heavy, though. The whole rifle is unnecessarily heavy.

At worst, you may have to replace the furniture if you don't dig the 'beat-to-shit' aesthetic. I'd honestly be less worried about the IMBEL kit and be more worried about finding a receiver that will last as long as the rifle if I were in your shoes.

I'll have to try sidebyside with a spacer one day. These specific rhodie mags are sticky as fuck tho so they're perfect for upside down, unlock, reposition hand, and then knocking them out and locking it back in is a good fluid motion. I need to thin the rust a bit to fit in the magwell better tho

You use a chestrig, plate carrier, or belt system when you play with that? I think I'm gonna be getting a belt system soon for 2gun and I'm gonna need to hunt down some good FAL/SCAR mag carriers

Don't bother with a spacer, all that'll do is make it incompatible with standard 2-mag pouches, side-by-side with a little wiggle room is fine.

I use all three, depending on what level of activity I'm doing, but my "Fuck Your Shit" kit has 8 goddamn mags on it.

How much of a pain is it then getting the edge of the receiver between the mags? That's the one thing that has always pushed me to upside down instead, practically impossible on AK mags

Not very, you rock one out and use the edge of the magwell to guide you in, locking the mag into place with your thumb right next to the bolt release.

Belt is an HSGI Suregrip Slotted, with one of their Rigger's Belts, I mostly carry just 1 extra rifle mag and 2 extra pistol mags, since it's also carrying my pistol and is meant to supplement my chest rig.

One just had a locking lug that was a little too small and the other was an RRA polymer that needed the shit beat out of it to fit in the magwell, had no BHO, and had trouble feeding the last couple rounds. Got my money back for em so I've got no problem

Aside from M1s? Not terribly much. G40s if you like constantly replacing parts. Pretty expensive too. Maybe mutilated AR-10s but probably not. I think the M1A, SVT40 and BAR actually got hit by name in the newest round of treason. At this point I'm having a hard time keeping the sheer amount of BS laws straight.

If he's referring to the bipod that attaches to your handguard, only buy one if you want it for the aesthetic or if you only ever shoot prone or from a bench because it's like taping a loaded magazine to the end of the barrel.

Built this fal awhile back.
New Argentine parts kit on an imbel gear logo receiver.
I've had troubles with the chamber being very rough so looking for a new barrel, preferably chrome lined or nitrided. I know they practically don't exist but any leads appreciated.

My current project is an hk91 clone build, going to get the black furniture with wide handgaurds, have a German g3 parts kit with new nitrided hammer forged barrel by rcm.
Should be a great rifle once built.

As anon said CMP is cheapest. But be aware that they're becoming more inconsistent in their stock and there's a slightly annoying process to get one. They should be getting in a new shipment from the Philippines or Korea or somewhere though so keep an eye out for those. Secondhand is another good place to look, the cheapest one I've ever found was $850. If all else fails Fulton makes new ones in the USA and in a lot unique configs to order but are expensive as all hell.

Having shot both, its gotta be the Faaru desu.

The impulse from each rifle is gonna be about the same, but the gas operated system of the FAL does a much better job of spreading the recoil out over time conpared to tge roller-delayed system in the G3, which kinda just delivers it as a sharp kick instead of a shove like the FAL.

Niether are really that bad, though. Just man up and learn to love tge recoil.
