Here on /k/ we have constant battles on which nation fielded the best bolt action whether its the Gewher 98 or the Lee Enfield but I am wondering the consensus on what you think is the worst bolt action every fielded by a military in the time of war
My personal guess is probably the Calvary Carcano for the atrocious recoil and deafening sound
The sound and recoil are a feature
>>33980843
Carcanos for the bolt feeling like dragging furniture through gravel or Mosin Nagants for shit (tho not as bad as pastagun) bolts and general inferior designs to what else was available at the time, at least the carcano did hold 6 shots over 5
>>33980843
Probably the Lebel.
>>33980881
was pretty cool for 1886
>>33980938
No it wasn't; it was already old hat in 1886. Poudre-B is the only thing remarkable about the Mle.1886 Lebel design.

>Here on /k/ we have constant battles on which nation fielded the best bolt action whether its the Gewher 98 or the Lee Enfield
the answer is the Type 38
>>33980843
>>33980876
Carcanos aren't even that bad, I definitely like them a lot more than Lebels.

I guess I just got lucky with my nugget. People describe working the bolt life figure skating through quicksand, mine is smooth as butter
>>33980975
the bolts are rough as hell, thats its only real drawback (mannlicher loading is a subjective point). And the 6.5 wasn't optomized but thats on the italians for waiting forever to go to spitzer
>>33980967
>changes small arms design and tactics as we know it
>old hat
Ok buddy.
It was fucking revolutionary, and made every other rifle in the world instantly obsolete.
Why exactly was it old hat? Because of its tube mag? Who else had a better magazine system at the time? The British were still using single shot rifles.
>>33981024
>Who else had a better magazine system at the time?
The US Navy.
Again, the Lebel rifle was nothing new to firearms design; it's ammunition was the single innovative element of the design, and other designs such as the Steyr-Kropatschek M1886 >>33980978 existed concurrently to the Lebel Mle.86 design, and did not require a redesign of the bolt in order to withstand the higher chamber pressures of smokeless powder.
>>33980938
And in 2 years it was beaten by the Gew 88. In 5 years it was obsolete. I live my Lebel, but for a infantry rifle it's shit.
>>33980990
>his spaghetti-blaster isn't chambered in superior 7.35 Carcano
>>33980843
Cavalry, dumbass.
>>33981134
My pasta rifle is chambered in 8mm mausers, for the volksstrum's pleasure.
>>33980843
Well, depending on your definition of military, you could probably say the homemade tunnel nuggets that got used in Vietnam.
>>33980843
8mm Lebel
>>33980970
>No muzzle flash
>Accurate as fuck
>Virtually no recoil
Nigger please. Why the japs decided to create a logistical nightmare instead of keeping a decent gun around is beyond me. Sure they were long as fuck but they were already producing carbines.
Type 30 Arisaka
>>33982264
It came down to them finding the 6.5mm was not that great for penetrating through foliage. Absolutely wonderful round to shoot at a range in the open, but the 7.7mm is better for going through dense jungle which was where the Japanese found themselves going into in the 30s-40s.
>>33982560
Type 30 isn't so bad.

I actually just bought one of these, it's cool as hell but it'll be awhile before I shoot it since ammo is unobtainium and I need to get dies and molds for.
I nominate the Italian Vetterli 6.5 carcano conversion as being if not the worst, then at least the sketchiest boltgun fielded in a war

I prefer to make my ammo. I've never paid over $1 per round for anything and I'm not about to start now
>>33983323
be that a beaumont i see?
>>33983348
sure is. another terrible obsolete bolt gun suitable for this thread. I love it, it's so nicely made, butter smooth bolt
>>33983426
i do so love guns from the golden age of blackpowder cartridge era, where id best place for reloading supplies and data, theres a place near me thats got a beaumont for 300 and a vetterli for 200
I also have a number of these awful things, but these weren't actually used in any war that I'm aware of, so they don't count for the purposes of this thread. noteworthy for being the first bolt action repeater adopted by any military in quantity

Hey I have one of those! Inheritance, along with an argentine rolling block Remington and a Dreyse needle rifle from my grandpas collection. These were all leftovers in the cabinet that nobody else wanted, but they are all cool if only wallhangers. I own more wallhangers than shooters, I think.
>tfw my uncle nabbed 3 krags and I got none
>>33983438
reloading this stuff can be challenging, I spend a lot of time searching through various forums and compiling all the relevant data, then trying to see what things people have done that are consistently yielding good results.
>>33983553
I'm envious of the Dreyse, you should actually shoot it, there's a couple guides on making the ammo if you google it
>>33983553
kill your uncle and take them
>>33983590
It's got a nasty crack in the stock unfortunately, otherwise I would consider it. The level of craftsmanship in the gun is astounding, it's a beaut.
>>33983625
that can be fixed
>>33983601
Nah lol he's a good guy. Gave me two mosins when he heard I had one that I liked to shoot, one PU the other a Westinghouse, as well as an extra dragoon stock for the PU.
>>33983641
That's the nice side. The other has a chunk out of it. :^(

Buffalo Arms, Track of the Wolf, Graf and Sons, and Midway for components and dies. Cast your own bullets to save a fortune. Data exists around but not much is published in manuals.
People are often sharing their loads online (but make sure you take everything with a grain of salt).
>>33983743
Buffalo arms is the only site I can get new ammo for my Winchester 1905 from.
At least now I have some cases I can measure up so I know how I have to modify some .38 special cases to work.
