So, full disclosure, I had a Marlin Model 60 as a kid, and remember that it was the gun that got me into shooting. Stupidly traded it for some SCUBA gear when I was in college.

I just picked up a used Model 60 for next to nothing ($40) "because it jams all the time." I guessed correctly that it probably hadn't been cleaned in 20 years. Took it apart, cleaned and defouled and de-gritted, reassembled. Less than an hour. Put 500 rounds through this weekend of mix-or-match leftover bulk ammo.

I've owned a 10/22 for years, and have a couple of other .22 rifles. The Marlin 60 absolutely rocked. Groupings (even with crap ammo and iron sights) were amazing. I added a mid-range Bushnell scope and put 50 rounds inside a 3" circle (with the exception of two 'fliers') at 75 yards. Spent the rest of the day shooting soda cans and eggs off of fenceposts. For accuracy, it beats the hell out of my 10/22.

I hope Marlin kept the quality up in their newer production. This rifle is amazing, and I'll be grabbing up any used "jam problem" Marlin 60 I find for sure.

No rifle that requires you tu put your hand in front of the muzzle with a round in the chamber can be best plinker.
795 is best plinker.
>>
>>33977923
I have a marlin 88 that beats my 60 for accuracy. Of course it being as long as a mosin probably helps. Reliability is shit though it wn't cycle anything other than CCI.
>>
>>33978010
What?

You can have a clear chamber and the safety on to load. You don't even have to put your hand in front of the barrel. You can unlock the tube from a safe angle.

The 795 is very nice though. The only thing Marlin hasn't done right is putting picitinny rails on their rifles. Those bb gun grade optic mounts are too easy to fuck up.
>>
>>33978038
Assuming the gun is empty. You can't top it off without a round in the chamber though
>>
>>33978010
Ok cool, because the Marlin 60 doesn't. Good to know.
>>
>>33978486
I've got the model 75, the shorter carbine version.
Great little gun
>>
>>33977923
I fully agree. I think the 795 is a bit better, but that's basically an upgraded Model 60, so eh.

The 10/22 will always have the better aftermarket, but I prefer pretty stock guns anyway.
>>
marlin 795 is where it's at and this is coming from a 1022 owner. All it needs is a sling and tech sights and its gtg, as long as you don't a one that has QC issues.

A 1022 is good out of the box as well but there's so much shit you can do to it. If you just want a plinker to plink and have no interest in modding then go with the 795. A 1022 is a gate way drug and a money pit. And if you do get a little bored with it, then there is still some after market you can dabble in for the 795.

>plinking and small game gun

Who gives a fuck, not everything needs to be tactically squared away.
>>
Does anyone know what the quality of the new ones is like? I tried out one of these the other day, and I was also fairly impressed by it.
>>
>>33977923
You say that the trade for SCUBA gear was stupid, but what did you receive for it? SCUBA gear can be quite expensive, especially regulators.
>>
>>33979879
That was my first thought too.

OP you may have done really well on that trade.

I'd buy that for $40 even if it was missing parts, let alone just needing a cleaning

Want mine? Im looking to sell it to buy a 10/22 takedown
>>
I fucked mine up like the young retard I was.
Scratches everywhere, dents in the stock, missing front sight hood, front sight is loose and can be moved with ease, feeding tube is bent, and it's dirty as shit.
What can I do to fix these problems, the sights are easy enough, I know where to get replacements, and cleaning the things shouldn't be too hard, but as for the scratches in the metal and the dents in the wooden stock, what can I do to fix it?
And would it be worth it?

>but as for the scratches in the metal and the dents in the wooden stock, what can I do to fix it?
>And would it be worth it?
you can do stuff to fix those but it wont be worth it. the amount of time and effort spent to restore it properly will be more than just buying a new gun. and if you halfass it to do it cheap its going to end up looking shitty so you might as well leave it as is.

Find a better SHTF rifle than a Model 60 loaded with subsonic short rounds.
>>
>>33981463
ah yes, the eternal debate. Buy a take down, and aftermarket stocks, buy a regular, want to bug out bag.

Sears model 40.

Still trying to figure out how to mount a suppressor without completely fucking the muzzle.

250$, glenfield 1X6 scope included.

Marlin 795 is best .22 plinker.
Nice heavy barrel.
>>
A friend of mine growing up had a Marlin 60. It was awesome and a total tack driver. So when I finally got out from under my noguns parents' roof the first gun I bought was a Marlin 60...only freedom group had bought them out in the interim. The rifle I got looks similar to my friend's oldie, but it's a total piece of shit.

Rear sight is on crooked and they fucked up the rifling too so even with tech sights or a scope you can't hit anything. I don't even know what to do with the shit heap. Selling it seems unethical. I never shoot it because it's miserable. I kinda want to just saw it into a few pieces and throw it away.

>>33989067
My vote for best plinker is a Henry .22 lever action. Super fun little guns.
>>
>>33977923
Pros:
>Reliable as fuck
>Handy
>Decently accurate

Cons:
>Fucking tip-off scope mounts
>No rear loading gate
>Pain in the ass to clean

Don't get me wrong, I like mine, but it's not perfect.

I acquired a savage 6a the same way. It "jammed". $50 and s good cleaning it a great shooter. Maybe even more accurate than my model 60.
I've been doing the same thing. Buying up old .22s and flipping them.

I cleaned up two ss bolt guns and sold them to coworkers, for their kids. People just don't know what they have.
