You sort of do, its not so much any sense of shame, but more of a case that he's probably worried you'd think badly or differently of him. The stuff soldiers do when deployed and what we become after leaving is generally 2 different things, I literally took a clean break from having to do any kind of military stuff for many years when I got out.
Basically became just another pleb doing a job, running my farm and doing the odd bit of shooting, hanging out at the range teaching kids how to shoot.
I don't tell my missus anything about what I did, most of my family (all non-mil) don't know what I used to do. Far as they're concerned I just drove around in 4wds yelling at people, fucking around with radios for two peacekeeping tours and 5 combat deployments.

But as much as stuff like MRE's are generally disgusting after you live off them for long enough, it does bring back some funny memories with my unit, sitting on a fucking rock at 10000ft up, freezing our nads off and coming up with ways of making tea at least warm without breaching light and smoke security or watching someone combine powdered tropical fruit drink with noodles and still keep it down.
