My apartment is so small and my nugget is so long that my door is a five step bayonet charge at most from my bed.

I take my Marlin guide gun.
It's the shortest and handiest gun I have and therefore ideal for my old tiny house. It repeats fairly fast if it should be required and it fires a powerful round that stops what it hits.

Honestly I feel like an inexpensive semiauto shotgun is the way to go DEPENDING on where you live and the possibility of over penetration.

I live in a fairly rural area with neighbors that are pretty far away. If I lived in an apartment my choice would be different.

Advantages
>#4 buck at close range has about the maximum amount of raw tissue damage you can get
>semiautomatic means no short stroking which is a very real possibility with a pump in a high stress situation
>inexpensive to purchase so when you lose it you're not losing anything you can't easily replace at a local gun store be it small FFL or big box store

Disadvantages
>more bulky than handgun or certain ARs
>more recoil than handgun or ARs
>increased risk of penetration which again can be an issue in a highly populated environment
>possible reliability issues with more inexpensive auto loading shotgun, you need to insure your gun and your preferred loading will function (you should do this with any firearm though)

I'd much rather lose say, a mossberg 930 than say a Walther or HK handgun or an AR that's $1000+

Something like a S&W M&P sport would be good for an apartment with non barrier blind loads as cost is low and they're widely available/replaceable but I really like the effect of #4 buck on tissue in home defense/self defense distances.

My AR. I keep it loaded with 30 rounds of PDX1 in a guitar case in my closet. Honestly I'd probably just stay in my room. The hallway outside is cramped as fuck and has some really nasty corners that I don't have the tactical expertise to clear them. I also have roomates so there's a million different things that could go wrong. I don't have anything valuable outside my room anyway. I'd basically just post up and blast the fuck out of anyone who tried to kick down my door.

If I'm in bed, a PX4 with light is on the nightstand ready to go. If I'm in the living room, a 92FS is nearby ready.

I generally don't keep my rifles loaded, but loaded mags are nearby. If I felt I had time I'd probably grab my AR out of the closet. My shotgun tubes are empty so that's a no go.

So probably handgun. Fastest to get to and I don't think any angle in my house has a Line of Sight to a wall that's less than 25 feet, other than maybe a hallway to the kitchen but the window of a clear shot there is pretty narrow. Inside the house I'd say most of my shots would end up being very close quarters. 2-5 yards

Id still put a reliable semi auto handgun over a semi auto shotgun any day on the basis of follow up shot placement, recoil control, maneuverability, AND ammo capacity.

Theres a reason I still throw it back to personal preference though. That being each platform has its major advantages and draw backs.
