Got suckered into buying a .308 Remington 700 as a first rifle by a Bass Pro associate after telling him I want to target shoot and possibly hunt down the road. Unfortunately I found out too late that .308 is too much for a college student budget and there is next to nowhere to shoot past 200 yards in the entirety of California.

Ranges:

Sounds like what I really want is an AR. Anybody have any recommendations for me? I want to go featureless, either with the kydex gripamabob or the Mean Arms stripper clip-o-rama but I don't know what type of lower/upper to get or what internal bullshit to dump inside it to make it go bang. I'm not going to pretend I know anything more than the basics about this shit. I have only fired an AR once and touched one maybe 5 times in my life.

Also, I know this is /arg/ but would I be better served with a featureless AK? 7.62x39 seems to be harder to find in anything aside from bulk boxes but cheaper to buy when I do find it around here in small quantities.

I will have around $800 by the time I sell my remshit 700 to my friend's ultrafudd dad.

P.s. do saddle mounted AR-15 scabbards exist for horseback riding? I want to do some real wild shit out in the back 40.

I bought one of the .300blk Handi Rifles a while back to dick around with lightweight subs.

My single shot load is a 147gr M80 clone over Red Dot at 800fps. Through my Saker it is remarkably quiet. Its actually quieter to the shooter than using the bolt release on an AR, and Ive had people 20yds away with no earpro who had no idea I was shooting.

Terminal performance is ass though, wouldn't use it on anything bigger than groundhogs. Also accuracy is meh, but that's due to the inconsistencies of the bullets. Swapping to 150gr Interlocks halved group sizes.

I have a question, so my country's special force went with the colt c8 over the hk416 due to it's cold hammer forged barrel, or "heavy barrel". Yet the c8 isn't free float, and isn't a piston ar, which is supposedly better for suppressed shooting. Is the heavy barrel really that good that its worth not having a free float and piston. Even the SAS had the c8/l119a1, but I believe they are getting new l119a2 soon(with free float). Some of the pros of the heavy barrel is supposed to be less and more controlable recoil, and longer service time, but does this really beat everything the 416 offers. Can't they just reaquest a heavier barrel for the 416, or am I being completely retarded.

I hear what you're saying, but really it doesn't strike me as a gigantic negative. Setting 10 should be bright enough to see outside in the bright sun and still low enough to work effectively indoors. Setting 9 may be the better all-round though.
