Hey /k/,
So my ol' grandpa passed recently and I got this to remember him by. The tough SOB lived through Japan occupied Manila, joined the US army afterwards during Korea, and then worked for Boeing projects including the B1 program. Anyway, he said this was a Korean helmet, but it looks like they still used the M1 back then and the bad guys used something else. Can anyone shed some light on what kind it is? Looks sort of nazi-ish to me. Also, general Ye Olde Thyme gear thread? Post your antiques!

Thanks in advance guys

My guess is it's an old Kuomintang helmet. I think they used stahlhelms during the era your granddad was serving.
Sorry for your loss man. I miss my grandpas all the time.
It's German M35. They were used in China during the civil war and probably ended up to Korea from there.

Also, don't do anything to it. It's a pretty nice display piece for a gun room or whatever.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Any idea what the thing on the front is for? Rank holder?
>>33950880
Insignia holder I think. More national ident than rank, but I'm not an expert so I'm probably wrong. Might have once looked like pic related.

Samefag here
It almost looked like it was added to it later it it's life. Maybe to facilitate storage. I'm kind of curious myself. Hoping some stahlhelm expert shows up who knows what's up for real.
Dudes. Spanish helmet. The front loop is for the Spanish Franco logo.

to this day i have never seen a stahlhelm liner that looked, or was comfortable to wear for more than 5 minutes
Could you show us the brim?

Nice. Thanks for weighing in. Found a pic.

>the bad guys used something else
It was called a Brodie helmet, although in the last few months of the war they changed to a different type of helmet
>>33950984
That's the one. You will find it as the M42. Collectors agree that it is basically the German M35 model but production was done in Spain. The front loop is normally the giveaway.

Thanks man. I learned something new today.

From what angle?

Looks about right, ya? Reading up on the history abd use of the M1935 found some pretty extensive use across the globe, from Argentina to Lithuania, Spain included.

Oh yeah. Entire libraries have been written about the German Stahlhelm, starting out in 1917 or so. Tough collection area primarily because there are so many of us, and because some of us are willing to insane prices, and because it is so profitable to make copies and sell them as originals. I have a few, but none of them have the badges that would make them actually valuable. Rather have some honest junk than glorified junk. It's so much cheaper.
This one I like, and I own it. During WW2 the brits were desperately short of lids to put on both their armed forces and their civil defense, and they put out a contract and had this one made for their CD. After the war we bought a few from the brits for our own CD, and painted them and gave them a lick of paint and a logo. The Zuckermanns are fun because they are so medieval looking, and because the helmet top is designed to be a crash deformation zone.

Its a post WWII Spanish Firemans Helmet. They were offered for sale in gun magazines in the late 70's to mid 80's for $20 and shipping.
I have one of these too. A Luftschutz gladiator helmet. Just the thing to put on the head of your 14 year old kid when he gets anti-aircraft cannon duty...
Here's a fun one. Bulgarian. Fairly distinctive shape. Bulgarians fought with the Axis; they had people both on Crete and on the Easter front.

Spanish Army M42/79. Adopted in 1942, upgraded in 1979 with a new ambidextrous chinstrap and better liner/suspension.
They used the M42 until the 80's when they finally decided to replace it with an M1 copy.
Pic related is mine.
Throwing in a regular M35, redressed postwar for the Norwegian Army. Different color, some minor liner changes although they also kept the oriiginals on an unknown number - I guess they were changed when necessary. The badge is Norwegian Army.
IDon't own it, but I took the pic once and it it's like OP's.
I think this helmets from ww1
