I just think it was weird the special force team was using the same helmet as Tony Hawk uses.
>>
>>33947444
Iirc, it's because they're a lot lighter and offer better bump protection. Plus standard helmets only stop pistol bullets not rifle.
>>
>>33947455
>Plus standard helmets only stop pistol bullets not rifle.
when will this meme die?
>>
>>33947444
They're probably bump helmets and don't offer much if any ballistic protection
>>33947455
Helmets won't necessarily stop rifle rounds but it can deflect/divert the path of the round, saving your life. I've seen it happen with 7.62
>>
>>33947506
Because it's true? The helmet of the time was the PASGT, which was only rated for shrapnel and pistol bullets.
>>
Composite helmets are only meant to protect you from shrapnel.
>>
>>33947506
Judging that this was the early 90's and the only other helmet they had at the time was the PASGT K-pot. Absolutely they could only stop shrapnel at best, maybe a pistol bullet. Modern ECH is roughly level 3 protection although it's not NIJ certified it will stop a rifle round but back then for Delta's purposes a bump helmet was the better option.
>>
>>33947455
>Plus standard helmets only stop pistol bullets not rifle.
Wut?
How come WW2 helmets could stop a full powered rifle bullet?
>>
>>33947572
They may have done in very particular or strange instances, but they weren't rated for that. It was designed to protect against everything else that flies around the battlefield.
>>
>>33947572

They really did do that.

Modern Ops Core is rated to Level IIIA, which is pistol rounds and frag only. Back then 3A helmets weighed alot.

When will you learn shit?

Google ballistic rating IIIA and come back to /k/ when you know some shit.

Was there really a Delta guy running around with a M14? Was the guy Grimes was based of off really a literal child rapist?
>>
>>33947444
is this a meme? I thought it was common knowledge that before the MICH and shit, SOF used ProTechs
>>
>>33947572

Go watch videos on YouTube of people shooting helmets with bullets. Steel helmets get punched through by pistol rounds.

PAGST helmets get punched through both sides by a rifle round.
>>
>you now realize that Black Hawk Down is closer in time to Vietnam than it is to today
>>
>>33948480
probably, they didn't have SCARs or EBRs back then so if you wanted a bigger punch, which these guys often do, your only real option was the M14.
>>
>>33947444
Yes. Men throw grenades into second story windows accurately from 30 yards out.

Or wait. Maybe it's a fucking movie dipshit.
>>
>>33948480
>Was there really a Delta guy running around with a M14?

They mention in the book he used it because the Somalis were always high so 5.56 would pass through them and they would keep moving. 7.62 would put them down.

The main doctrine of the time was that Kevlar was too heavy to be usable and if you got head shot you were dead anyway.

Also at the time some little birds (the helos) didn't have enough lift to be able to carry troops with full gear. The case was the same with the delta siege in operation acid gambit. You were authorized to wear a helmet or plates depending on where you were sitting on the helo, pic related museum about the the operation in panama prison raid
>>
>>33947455
>Plus standard helmets only stop pistol bullets not rifle.
They can't stop either lmfao.
They are only for protection against and even then its 50/50.
>>
>>33947455
Modern helmets (at least british army Osprey) will stop 7.62; however its pretty irrelevant because the force of a 7.62 hitting you in the head will seriously fuck your shit up if not outright kill you, hence why a lot of operators wear lighter and less restrictive helmets.

What's worse, actual Hunter posting or unfunny faggots posting as Hunter posting?

>>33947444
Pretty accurate. They brought in Rangers who where there to act as advisors and had the actors go through a week or two of training before filming to get everything right.

Bump helmets were pretty common at the time as PASGT helmets were too heavy and didn't offer enough protection to justify wearing them.

>>
>>33954828
Nope - Grimes is a gentleman named John Stebbins renamed. He was indeed a clerk tagged in at the last minute to replace an injured SAW gunner - and he went on to rape a child back in America. He featured heavily in the book, and they wanted his story in, but his name out.

Yes to both.
SFC Randy Shughart carried an M14 during the battle of the Black Sea. This is a picture of the man and the rifle.

SPC John Stebbins was convicted of sexually assaulting his daughter after the events and the production staff decided to create a fictional replacement.

He raped his own six year old. Used up her vagina, sodomized her and forced her to give blowjobs on several occasions. The kid told her mother a year later after they separated.

There should a death penalty for that kind of shit... I hope he gets his ass torn up on a regular bases in jail at least.

Also interesting because Paul Howe is quoted a few times in the book. Apparently he really wasn't happy with the performance of the Rangers and on at least two occasions his team took friendly fire from them.

Danny McKnight became a diddler didn't he?

Not that I ever heard. Nothing crops up on a casual search either. Col. Steele (Capt. during the movie) hot caught up with some accusations of way crimes in Iraq, but nothing substantial ever came of it. The street goes that he was a little too aggressive for the liking of the top brass.

>a bump is more dangerous than a bullet, but a bullet is far more deadly

Forgot what book I read this in but it was in reference to wearing rafting helmets. Just made sense to me. Kind of like wearing a good pair of gloves wont stop your fingers from getting chopped off, but it will protect them from most everything else you will run into.

In the movie the delta guys don't have ANVIS mounts on their helmets. A good reason to take your bump helmet on day ops is to have NVG capability when it turns out the OP takes longer than expected. Although I'm not sure this was standard practice before the incident. The rangers sure did not bring their NV.

Back then most SF didn't wear helmets. And if they did it where mostly bump helmets.
