You need to go to your local pd and apply for a fire arms id card. If youre going to purchasing a pistol it is a good idea to also apply for 2-3 purchase permits at the same time.

The fid card will require a criminal background check, a mental health check, finger prints, and two character references.

After passing all the checks NJ is required to issue within a month, but depending on the county you live in it can take up to six months.

Once you have youre fid card you may purchase one firearm every 30 days as well as ammo. In order to lurchase a pistol you will need the seperate purchase permit which you should have applied for while getting your initial card. Pistol ourchase permits are good for 3 months if i remember but can be renewed if not used. You will need a purchase permit every time you want a pistol and have to apply all over again every time you need a new purchase permit.

As far as ccw goes it will never happen unless your father is a judge, mother is a member of congress, and your uncle is a lawyer.

I lived in jersey for a few years to make money working nyc. I took a paycut of almost half moved to PA and live better now and can purchase any kind of firearm when ever I want with no hassle minus nfa items being a pita.

Anyone else ever get asked for extra papers/a Dr's note by the PD that was issuing your FID? Can they do that? I got them the extra papers they wanted but now it's been like two months since I dropped them off at the station and the officer handling the paperwork hasn't contacted me. Whenever I call and ask to talk to the officer handling my application the person who answers the phone puts me through to his answering machine. I've asked when that officer will be in , called then and just been told they're out on patrol. The guy hasn't returned any of my calls. I know I can get free legal advice for being an ANJRPC member, and I just got a thing to renew my membership. Is it worth it pursuing this, lawyers and all, if they are trying to give me a hard time? It's a shame what's happened to NJ. When I was growing up in Bergen County in the 70s and 80s it hadn't yet been completely taken over by stockbrokers commuting into lower Manhattan, and still had a nice working-class feel to it. That changed over the course of the 80s and 90s. One of my neighbors was a Marine Corps veteran and had a couple of hunting rifles, another was an immigrant from Europe who had been a messenger boy for the Dutch Resistance during WWII, and yet another was an Englishman who had been a tailgunner on Lancasters and Halifaxes (Believe it or not, there was a time when most immigrants were high-IQ whites from First World countries who did not end up on welfare!). All of them worked high blue to low white collar jobs (as my dad did, too), and got along just fine. No way that could happen now. The whole state is, politically, run by the combined vote of soccer moms from the 'burbs around NYC and Philly, by Jews, and by Third World immigrants. None of them respect your rights or want you to have a gun.

A damn shame...
