If we're talking about the AK-47 or AKM then it's a heavier round than the M16, which has its uses. It can also go for longer without cleaning. The M16 will probably suit your better if you have a very abrupt "oh shit" moment where you heavily dirty it with the environment, but the AK will work longer if it's only getting dirty from powder residue and stuff like sand.

However the AK is used by so many precisely because they do not clean it. Just run something down the barrel and you're done.

The M16 may require some more maintenance work but putting love into it will give you love back. It means the system will survive what would foul up others.
The AK-47 can be neglected because of its looser tolerances and keep firing but if you do something like fall into mud then those open spaces are suddenly filled and will jam the gun.

Assuming 5.45(which is more or less the same as 5.56 except for terminal ballistics, inb4 this one has slightly flatter trajectory and that one recoils less - it's really minimal difference).

When AK jams(both will jam, it's only question of time when) you can clear it by doing literally 3 things. Pull out the mag, cycle the action manually or if needed hold the bolt open and get the case/round out manually. Everything is as accessible as it gets.

Meanwhile when AR jams there's about 20 million different solutions for it. First you have to identify your problem, then you have to know how to handle it, I've heard stories about people giving their AR's to gunsmiths to clear. Again, it can be fixed with training but you can also use that training time for something else.

Durability is also important thing. AK parts can go out of specs due to extended use but the gun will still function, which is good idea in case your military decides that it's time to go cheap on firearms and get your soldiers to use the same weapons for 20 years+(hello M249).

Piston>no piston in cold weather. Which for Russians means a lot. Mind you, neither of them will function reliably in the arctic, but as an action vs. action, AK will have some advantage.

It still works decently if you try to fire full-auto for prolonged period. Which is a reason why Soviets use RPK for a very long time now but all tests of SAW AR's have failed.

Getting into the kind of sights, ergonomic features etc is senseless because you can modify AK to be controlled like an AR and vice versa if you really want it so I'm not going to even start it. Outside of probably ability to use folding stocks, but imo it was never a huge issue and it'll never be.
