What does /k/ think of the UKs Dreadnought class nuke subs set to replace the current Vanguards?

Four are planned with one under construction right now, set to have a larger displacement than an Ohio.

Is having four enough for the UK to remain a viable nuclear power?
>>
Four submarines is enough to sustain skills to build more if necessary and ensure that one is always is available for patrol.
>>
>>33942033
Four is fine for a small country like the UK, it's hard to give an opinion on the new class though since no details have been made public yet.
>>
>>33942033
Are 4 enough to keep one at sea at all times?
>>
>>33942067
Yes, the UK and France both have 4 each and manage to keep one at sea with no issues.
>>
>>33942060

12 missiles seems to be the official figure
>>
>>33942033

There's some sharing going on between the Dreadnought and Columbia class submarines. Some of the missile compartments are made jointly by the US and UK for both classes for example.

But really, next to nothing is known about them. But they're bringing back HMfuckingS Dreadnought. That name alone is worth hype to have back around.

They've also said that the next three will have "similarly iconic and important historical significance."

Holding out hope for Hood, Nelson, Royal Sovereign or dare I utter...Warspite.

Dreadnought confirmed for best name and motto.
If current naming convention holds wont all the ships be named with D words, like the Darings and Astutes?
>>
>>33946483
So we could have HMS
>Daedalus
>Diomede
>Dictator
>Destruction
>Devastation
>Demon
>Due Repulse
>Dreadful
The British really name ships well.
>>
>>33943133
HMS Falklands
Just to see if Argentinians will refer to it as HMS Islas Malvinas
>>
>>33942033
Four isn't a downgrade, but 12 tubes per sub is.

It's still enough to present a viable, proportional threat of nuclear genocide against likely nuclear attackers however.
>>
>>33946877
You are aware that even their current subs are not carrying full silos and their missiles are not equipped with all the warheads they were designed for, right?

Something something cold war is over.

4 is one more than required for continuous at-sea deployment. It provides the option for one ship to go into deep refit/repair.

>>33942033

The only details we know are non senstivive ones.

It will have separate male and female quarters, toilets and wash facilities.

Another indication of the space onboard is the dedicated classrooms and Gym (not just a treadmill wedged between a washing machine).

Dynamic lighting to simulate night/day like you might find on a passenger jet.

We know that it will share a Common missile compartment with the US subs, increasing the tube diameter from 2.2M to 3M, and allowing the 4 non-nuclear tubes* to be equipped with various types of missiles and UUV/UAV.

*Since 2010 UK SSBN's carry a maximum of 8 missiles with a total for 40 warheads as a cost/arms reduction method.

It will be the first RN sub to use the PWR-3 reactor, the fine detail;s of which we will not find out in our lifetimes. But as a general rule UK and US reactors share a common pool of technological data with each nation then designing and building its own reactor.

Just as Vanguard was designed around the proven technology in Trafalgar merged with a new reactor. Dreadnaught will take the advancements made by Asute and add a new reactor.
>>
>>33946501
Dreadful, Destruction and Devastation are already the next names of the other 3.

Good enough, since they're capable of ending the world.

Big scary subs with those names won't sit well with the lefties
>>

It's almost certain they won't do it this time.

Since they only ever have one at sea, it's really just those 12 missiles one would have to worry about when attacking the UK. The other subs would be wiped out in the docks.

12 really isn't much. I wouldn't give two shit about Britain's nukes if I was Russia.

12 missiles with 8 warheads each, thats pretty serious.
>>
>>33948109
How could a single missile attack 8 different targets, when the warheads are all in the same missile? Do the warheads have their own rockets to propel them to different places?

>>33948141
>>
>>33948161
So they free fall from low orbit and glide to their separate targets?
>>
>>33948174
Not necessarily glide as they are directed by internal guidance systems.
>>
>>33948188
I assumed that they would have to be guided by something. However, if they are not being propelled actively, there would be a limit to how wide an area a single cluster warhead could cover.
>>
>>33947993
At least they sink faster
>>
>>33948203
Yes, there is a limit to the radius of coverage, but the altitude at which they separate more than allows plenty of room to vaporize enough people.
>>
>>33948095

>implying more than one cannot be surged out in a crisis situation
>implying 12 missiles with multiple warheads each isn't more than enough

For a pure countervalue second strike that's 100 million Russians dead
>>
>>33948383
>100 million

It's cute when you make up numbers like that.
>>
>>33948488

The 10 most populous Russian cities have 25 million in total, hit them with a couple of warheads each then use the remainder to hit industry and transport hubs. Starvation, famine and disease will take care of the rest within 5-10 years.
>>
>>33948507
But all of England would have been turned into a growing green island at that point
>>
>>33948998
*Britain
*glowing
>>
>>33948507
How would the country be affected by famine when you just got rid of all the cities?

How could Russia have cities with 25 million people when New York city is just 9 million?
>>
>>33949746
He did say in total.
>>
>>33946501
>HMS Donald Trump
>>
>>33948998
>Millions of Brits dead
>Millions of Russians dead
It's almost like some sort of mutually assured destruction
>>
>>33948998

But it would have saved the western world in the process, which would be a noble end for the fading empire.
>>
>>33948095

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how high up they go.

Once the missile hits the stratosphere and enters low-earth decaying orbit, the MIRV splits open and releases the warheads along with decoys and chaff. The missiles then use their own internal navigation system and start heading for their targets; From the fucking stratosphere. It could split up at the Finnish/Russian border and strike everything from Moscow to the Black Sea. A single modern ICBM is a fucking terrifying weapon.

Twelve of them is an effective deterrent against any and all aggressors.

All submarines since WW2 have been dual hull.

Typhoon has a tandem pressure hull.
