Join the army if you want to be a helicopter pilot.
The army has thousands of helicopters, the airforce has maybe more than one hundred, this makes airforce very competitive, whereas in the army it's more or less pass or fail. You will also get much more flight time in the army vs the airforce. The army also has more vairied mission sets.

The Stealth BH used in the OBL Op was way more useful because it was meant for interdiction and getting people in an area without alerting anyone. Meanwhile a CAS chopper like the Comanche would have been pants on head retarded for stealth. Ooga Booga's with RPG-7's would still be able to shoot at it without a problem so long as they can fuckin' see it.

Does anyone here have their Helo license?
>>33950139
I didn't know they could go so that fast
>>33950177
Hopefully never.
>>33953237
They actually can go surprisingly fast and have not too terrible range. The new massive helo that the Marines ordered (I can't remember it's name) is effectively worse in most ways. I think the only upshot is that you can fit more of them on a support carrier. I'm really surprised to be frank, it took forever, but it seems like the finally figured out how to make the Osprey work. Which in itself is a good thing, since if you have a functioning platform - then the next vehicle to iterate off this technology won't need to start from scratch in terms of learning what does and what doesn't work.
>>33953237
Ospreys are fucking magic.
I think that battery powered flying vehicles might be the next step for helos used by Tier 1 guys or at least helo-type vehicles.
Did you guys see that flying "car" video from a few weeks back? The entire thing just runs off batteries. It has a carry capacity of somewhere around 200kg IIRC, but it can only go a few miles. However! And I think this is key, it is extraordinarily quiet, and on top of that - I know what electric vehicles running for hours look like under FLIR and IR. They are essentially just radiate the same temperature as their ambient surroundings due to absorbing the heat/cold of the air/light. This would in theory make them invisible to heat seeking MANPADS, and if you slather a coat of radar absorbing paint/material on their already small frames it makes them that much harder to pick up.
Case in point, the BH's during the OBL mission weren't detected by anyone other than people nearby who thought it was just the military doing training. Now imagine you've got a vehicle that not only doesn't really show up very well in thermals, but is practically immune to heat seeking/radar guided munitions, no one knows it was there because it doesn't make much noise plural, and the radar sites don't pick it up as it comes/goes.
I am imagining a sort of mini-helo, like the mini-subs used for DEVGRU and so on that are attached to the USS Seawolf and USS Jimmy Carter. Just a couple of extremely small vehicles, that deliver guys to a point, they do an op, and they are gone without ever leaving any trace.
>>33953459
Makes me wonder how many of these programs are out there. Not necessarily top secret but secret level things you have to be read in on. There's still almost no information about the stealth blackhawks on the internet. What other air vehicles are out there which we know nothing about?
inb4 aurora
>>33953561
6th gen fighter jets may or may not already be in service
>>33953561
Probably a lot.
It really doesn't take that much to make proof of concept vehicles. Look at the entire X-Class of planes for instance. Making one off's or just a few aircraft is easy as shit to do. The real problem is when you need to consider how to make thousands of them, and then factor in survivability, etc. Test pilots know that the plane they are about to get into has a pretty good chance of just disintegrating around them at some point.
I like to look at technology on the market, or technology people are planning on bringing to market and then try to assess whether or not the military might have already done the same thing. I don't think for an instant that couple of nu-males out of New Mexico with a plexiglass "car" and some brushless motors running off lithium-ion batteries suddenly came up with anything new that the military didn't at least think about making at one point or another.
Case-in-point: The CIA has black patents. Basically these are patents that will remain classified until someone else brings the same technology to market, at which point the CIA can reveal their patent and enforce it. This happened a few years back when a couple kids from MIT (IIRC) deduced a way to record conversations through glass via lasers and wrote a paper on it. The CIA immediately revealed their patent afterwards.
>>33953664

If, and only if you truly have a passion for all things rotary should you even consider it. Terrible career compared to fixed wing let alone non-aviation fields. As a helo jockey you're a specialist that is only needed when there are no other options, and you better be ready to move around for the rest of your miserable life chasing work making money that someone with a proper education and a half a brain gets only 5 years into their career. My suggestion would be to do something else that is even remotely interesting that makes you enough dosh that you can fly as a hobby.
That being said I thoroughly enjoy it since I've no children, no ties to any country, and it's a skillset that I can practice pretty much anywhere in the world where rotors turn
For some reason a lot of you think Kiowas pilots are crazy. In most cases that is very far from the truth and they are just as dorky as all the others. However in 2011 there were two pilots in my unit (6-6 Cav) who got so excited upon seeing enemy insurgents in a truck, they flew right into the truck and died. It's sad that they died and all but I still find it so hilarious. I don't even know if they killed any of the insurgents but they and their Kiowa were toast.

Is this 2014? Most corrosion problems have been fixed 3 years ago already, when the Dutch Navy first complained about them and halted deliveries. 3/4rd of the problems were easy fixes (e.g. applying grease/paint/sealant) and were done within months.
It's operational history differs a lot per country because pretty much every country has a different version with different sonars, engines, comm systems, etc. But most NH90 TTH/NFHs hit FOC years ago. The only thing that is limiting it operationally is parts availability and that NHI is still rolling out the Final Radar Configuration to give the NFH version full ASuW/ASW capabilities.

I can't really explain why but there is a trend of the Russian armed forces to often have multiple different pieces of equipment for the same role and this ranges from services rifles, to utility vehicles and aircraft. So while the obvious western standard suggests that having two units that do the same thing dictates redundancy, the Russian view is to continue developing and keeping these units in service regardless.
