I think the reason he thinks like this (and I'm speculating here), is that he's only ever shot a handgun when he was in the army (conscripted), he probably had one trip to a range with some familiarization and they never did it again. Because he only shot handguns once, he didn't hit shit because nobody taught him the fundamentals of pistol shooting.

Firearms were never a big deal for me growing up, They were around the house, especially my grandfather's as he was a game warden.

Once I got out of the Navy my dad started collecting a few pistols until he moved to Texas that went "Full on buyer".

What's even weirder is that he loves military shit and guns, and will talk to me about technical and historical gun stuff for hours, but loses his shit when it comes to civilian gun ownership. It's like there's this one area of his brain that just short circuits when it comes to guns. He was never really into shooting when I was growing up with him and mom. I moved out and got into guns a while afterwards.
I lived a 14 hour drive away so we didn't get to see each other very often other than Christmas.

I would bring my guns to go shooting and he would say that nobody needs the scary black guns I had. He still enjoyed spending time with me.

Then I'd visit the next year and he'd be excited to shoot with me again and he bought a new rifle of his own, gave me his old moose rifle.
