They can anything. Steel case? No problemo, the first issued ammunition, F1, was steel case up to the F2/F2A M193. Brass case? They still use it well without issue (See F4 and F5). Alot of the "le it can't eat brass" meme is from the first transition of steel to brass cased M193, designated as F3 ammunition. The primers where too thick and in some, the walls would be too thin, causing the kaboom. Alot of those issues were solved when they started to make their own SS109 ammunition. Then they stopped that and had the Brits provide them ammo afterwards, which is the current F5 SS109 ammunition. The link below has everything you need to

Yes, the FAMAS can shoot brass cased ammo without any problem. However you're wrong about everything else, and so is the link you posted.

The very first ammo the FAMAS was designed for was actually brass cased, Then the military quickly switched to steel to reduce costs. During the early 2000's, all the remaining weapon and ammo factories were shut down, forcing France to buy ammo abroad. The military bought standard brass cased M193 ammo from a wide selection of countries : USA, UK, Brazil, Germany, Israel, UAE, etc. without any problem until the day when a batch of SS109 was ordered by mistake. Soldiers during training discovered the accuracy was poor (because of the 1:12 twist) and there were a few isolated incidents, nothing major as the FAMAS' kevlar cheekpiece prevents any serious injury to the shooter. Like 7 incidents out of 30 million cartridges fired in a year. It actually got nothing to do with the ammo itself, but with 30 years old guns that have never seen any maintenance.
However, some French blog specialized in the military (but actually written by some deluded fuck who doesn't understand a thing about it) somehow believed the incidents were a big deal, and that it was because the ammo in question was bought from Israel and the UAE, that this ammo was somehow low quality. Then the Firearms Blog found the article, ran it throught google translate and arrived to the mistaken conclusion somehow that the issue was with the ammo being brass case.

In the link you posted, there are many other falsehoods as well. The FAMAS G2 was created in the late 90's, intended for the international market. It has got nothing to do with France joining NATO again, and it couldn't have been made in 2009 since the St-Etienne factory was shut down in 2001.
Also, every single FAMAS F1 in service has a 1:12 barrel twist, they were never rebarreled to 1:9. Those that were converted to the FELIN standard have got a 1:7 twist.

One interesting thing about the french is their love for grenades.
They already had kind of a hard-on for it before modern times, really went into it during ww1 (when the german solution to trench warfare was smgs), created the tromblon VB, the 22mm spigot system, and a ton of grenade launchers and light mortars.
Their first man-portable AT weapon was a shaped charge rifle grenade made in 1940, and they made some shaped charge mortar rounds as well.
Even today they got one LGI per squad, and their grunts are called "grenadiers voltigeurs" (skirmisher grenadier) instead of the fusilier/rifleman of the anglos.

As a result, the FAMAS is a weapon designed with rifle grenades in mind. It was also covered quite extensively in the manual.
It does kick like a mule when you shoulder it instead of planting it on the ground, tho.

On the pic you can see the grenade sights in front of the charging handle, and the threaded barrel with adjustable ring. There's also another sight on the front of the carry handle.

On a sidenote, I have no idea why the G1 prototype is so popular with airsofters.
