True that it did keep them from doing back flips on grades over 60 degrees as long at the tiller didn't fold up under the weight. Wasn't the purpose though, just a helpful side effect.
The braking system on tracks had to be invented because german artillery smashed up these wheels, then the Mk1 couldn't steer.
